JOHNSON CITY (May 18, 2020) – The ETSU Health Osteoporosis Center will offer free osteoporosis screenings every Thursday in June to support osteoporosis awareness in the community and in recognition of Osteoporosis Month, celebrated during May. 

The free dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans will include one hip and the spine, with interpretation. This non-invasive test measures bone mineral density to assess its strength. 

The ETSU Health Osteoporosis Center, located at 2109 W. Market St., Room 143, promotes research; provides diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive services; and facilitates educational opportunities for the public and health care professionals.

JOHNSON CITY (May 18, 2020) – East Tennessee State University is offering high school seniors in Tennessee a new opportunity to attend their first year tuition-free.

“The COVID-19 crisis is causing financial burdens on families that we could have never anticipated, and we do not want to see high school seniors, many of whom have already missed out on traditional milestones, to also miss out on the opportunity to attend a four-year university,” said Dr. Joe Sherlin, vice president for Student Life and Enrollment at ETSU.

Boating-related incidents are responsible for a significant number of the drowning fatalities that occur within Indigenous communities in New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and Canada. The aim of this paper was to identify promising practices for boating safety initiatives that target Indigenous peoples within these countries and evaluate past and ongoing boating safety initiatives delivered to/with Indigenous peoples within these countries to suggest the ways in which they – or programs that follow them - may be more effective. Swimming Pool Environment And Respiratory Health Issues Experienced By Masters Swimmers: Results From A Literature Review And Survey Of United States Masters Swimming Clubs, Jody C. Gan, Julia Snegg, William Harder

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

After three members of a Masters adult swim club died of lung cancer, both a literature review and survey were conducted with representatives from 746 United States Masters Swimming clubs to explore a possible relationship between swimming and cancers of the respiratory tract. Six other clubs reported known cancers of the respiratory tract among club members, but none of the other 740 clubs reported a similar cluster of lung cancer. More clubs reported cases of chronic respiratory infections and widespread complaints about air quality. JOHNSON CITY – (May 15, 2020) Two highly-skilled gamers have been recruited as team captains for the new esports varsity team at East Tennessee State University.  Both have been awarded scholarships and will be enrolled as students starting this fall.

Xavier Mitchell of Knox County will lead the team competing in Overwatch® and Lucca Weber of Ennepetal, Germany and current Greeneville resident will captain the League of Legends® team.

JOHNSON CITY (May 15, 2020) – Across the region resilient workers, makers and volunteers are dedicated to supplying the personal protective equipment health care professionals need to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. One such example is a regional effort underway to manufacture face shields.

Production of several types of the emergency face shields, including one designed by faculty at East Tennessee State University, began in March when Gov. Bill Lee and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission issued a statewide request for personal protective equipment.

JOHNSON CITY (May 15, 2020) - Niswonger Children’s Hospital and East Tennessee State University announced today the successful recruitment of two distinguished pediatric surgeons to the region. This marks the first time the region will benefit from as many as three pediatric surgeons, providing the capability to enhance surgical programs and trauma services for children.

Michael Allshouse, DO, and Brad Feltis, MD, PhD, recently agreed to join the faculty at ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine and the team at Niswonger Children’s Hospital, bringing with them impressive credentials in pediatric trauma care, pediatric general surgery and fetal surgery.
