JOHNSON CITY – (Oct. 28, 2020) Following its first season of competition, the ETSU Esports Varsity Team has earned a spot in the Overwatch Fall Cup Playoffs hosted by the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE).
East Tennessee State University’s team rounded out its inaugural season 8-1 and finished second place in its group. NACE will announce the playoff brackets toward the end of this week. ETSU will begin the playoffs Monday evening at 8 p.m. The tournament games will be broadcast on Twitch and in the esports arena within the D.P. Culp Student Center.

JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 26, 2020) – Retired Maj. Gen. Gary Harrell became the fourth alumnus of East Tennessee State University’s Army ROTC Program inducted into Cadet Command’s Hall of Fame during a special ceremony recognizing his extraordinary military career.
Before earning his Green Beret and commanding special operation Delta Force in Somalia later chronicled in the book and film “Black Hawk Down,” Maj. Gen. Harrell was a student at ETSU and member of the Grantland Rice Bowl Championship football team in 1969.

JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 26, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s College of Public Health is now offering a Master of Health Administration (MHA), expanding opportunities for current health care professionals, as well as individuals without previous experience in health care.
The MHA prepares professionals to plan, direct and coordinate the business activities of health care providers. ETSU’s MHA has four areas of focus: finance; quality; policy and regulation; and people and partnerships.
The new program, which has two tracks, is designed to be convenient and accessible to students from different educational and professional backgrounds.

(Oct. 26, 2020) Dr. Wilsie Bishop, Senior Vice President for Academics and Interim Provost, announced that she will retire on June 30, 2021, after a 43-year career at East Tennessee State University.
Bishop came to ETSU as a temporary faculty member in the College of Nursing in 1978. Since that time, she earned tenure and progressed through the faculty ranks, serving in administrative roles including department chair, dean, and assistant/associate vice president prior to becoming a vice president in 2005. While serving in various administrative roles, she has continued to be a classroom teacher as well as a mentor for …

Developing A Competency Model For Highway Safety Engineers: A Delphi Method, Garrett K. Wheat

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the core competencies needed by State DOT Highway Safety Engineers as perceived by Highway Safety experts in the United States. First, a list of competencies was identified. Next, a panel of Highway Safety experts determined the importance of each identified competency for the current year (2020) and for the future (year 2030). Finally, ratings provided by the panel were tested for the presence of consensus.

Serious games can challenge users in competitive and entertaining ways. Educators have used serious games to increase student engagement in cybersecurity education. Serious games have been developed to teach students various cybersecurity topics such as safe online behavior, threats and attacks, malware, and more. They have been used in cybersecurity training and education at different levels. Serious games have targeted different audiences such as K-12 students, undergraduate and graduate students in academic institutions, and professionals in the cybersecurity workforce. Among the most famous of the plays was “Everyman,” published in 1530 originally under the title of “The Summoning of Every Man.”

JOHNSON CITY — (Oct. 14, 2020) East Tennessee State University has announced that Commencement exercises for fall 2020 graduates, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12, will be held virtually.
This decision was based on guidelines from the CDC, state and local health agencies, as well as recommendations from ETSU’s COVID-19 Medical Response Team. The unique circumstances presented by the COVID-19 outbreak has continued to present challenges in the university’s ability to host large-scale events.
