Tiger Woods Is God: Check The Website, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Quick, tell me the name of the golfer who won the U.S. Open last week. Now which golfer didn't win? If you are like most casual golf watchers you couldn't name the winner, but you knew that Tiger Woods did not win. My guess is that you could not name either of the players who were in the Monday playoff. And furthermore, like much of the rest of America, you did not watch the final round of the tournament on Sunday, nor the Monday playoff.

Hockey Night In Orlando: The End For The Ihl, Richard C. Crepeau

Whenever I went off to see the Solar Bears of the International Hockey League in the O-rena, I liked to think of it as "Hockey Night in Orlando." With much fanfare and enthusiasm the Orlando Solar Bears opened play in the IHL six seasons ago. Two weeks ago they won the Turner Cup signifying the championship of the IHL. A few days later the IHL was out of business, and then two days ago the Solar Bears announced their exit from the scene.

It was not a big story but it did set the sports talk shows buzzing for a few days and some print was expended on it. Brendon Lemon, editor of Out magazine let it be known that he has been involved in an affair with a major league baseball player, and that he just might reveal the identity of that player. Lemon said he was tired of the strain that this secret corner of his life was taking on him and his lover.

By all accounts it was a normal day at the Minneapolis Public Library. Nothing out of the ordinary seemed in the air. Then suddenly there was shouting, a shower of obscenities, and a general ruckus over in one crowded section of the main reading room. No, Governor Ventura had not arrived.

When I returned from the O-rena and the Magic NBA Playoff game last night I had a headache. Maybe it was a bad Pepsi, maybe the pounding the Bucks put on the Magic, or maybe it was the decibel levels of noise that once again assaulted my very being. I'm not talking about the screaming of the fans, but about the loud thumping music, the pounding of the bass, and the inane booming "voice of banality" that is the arena announcer.

For the fan of professional sport it is a wonderful time of year with a cornucopia of marvelous events on the airwaves. The NHL playoffs are underway, the NBA playoffs are off and running, and the eternal hope of spring has been let loose with the opening month of baseball season. Even the Cubs are pennant contenders. It's all a reminder that for everything else blotting the landscape of sport, the game is still the thing.

Hasim Rahman is the new heavyweight champion of the boxing world, or at least that part of the boxing world governed by the IBF and WBC, whoever or whatever they may be. The only relevant questions here are: what does this mean for Don King? Who is Hasim Rahman? And where is Mike Tyson?

In two cases in the last few weeks the power of sport to move politicians has been on display. In the process the notion that sport is a promoter of democracy and a teacher of civic involvement and responsibility has been dealt a severe blow.

Local Television Journalism: Developing Ethics Through Discussion, Chris W. Allen, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt
Communication Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to examine the views of local television news producers about ethical policies and situations they face. A majority of respondents agreed that it was important for a television newsroom to have a code of ethics or discussion of ethics in the newsroom. Most often producers perceived that their newsrooms were involved in discussions of fairness, balance, and objectivity; allocating air-time to opposing interest groups or political candidates; and, providing right of reply to criticism. Producers support a written code of ethics, or occasional discussion of ethics in the television newsroom, but see the competitive …

Factors Influencing Air Force Members' Tolerance Of Fraternization, Amanda G. Brandau
Factors Influencing Air Force Members' Tolerance Of Fraternization, Amanda G. Brandau
Theses and Dissertations
AFI 36-2909, provides the current policy on acceptable and unacceptable social interactions between Air Force members. The intent of distinguishing relationships as professional or unprofessional is to preserve proper respect for authority and maintain focus on the mission through professional relationships while avoiding the negative effects of unprofessional relationships. Fraternization is one unacceptable type, which governs relationships between officers and enlisted members. There have long been differences between official policy and actual practice in the area of fraternization. These differences likely influence the acceptance of existing policy, and the amount of tolerance toward behaviors that Air Force policy would consider …

Analysis Of Factors Influencing Tolerance Of Fraternization, George J. Matusak Iii
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores several factors that might explain discrepancies in the tolerance level of fraternization among company grade officers within the Air Force. Factors that may influence implementation may include the nature of the relationship (platonic or sexual), the sex of the participants (same or different gender or gender of the senior person), whether the incident occurred between people in the same chain of command, and whether the survey respondent was ever stationed at a remote location. This research used a survey sent out to a population of company grade officers and comprising of scenarios that varied the combination of …

This research examined the effect of organizational structure on the relationships between subordinates and their supervisors using measures of leader-member exchange (LMX), mentoring effectiveness, perceived organizational support (POS), perceived opportunities for promotion, job satisfaction, affective commitment, and intent to remain. The sample obtained included 147 subordinate Air Force traditional Civil Engineer officers, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers, Bioenvironmental Engineer officers, and 27 squadron commanders at 19 Air Force bases. The methods of multiple analysis of variance and structural equation modeling were used to evaluate five research questions and nineteen hypotheses. Overall, no differences were found between the types of subordinate …

In the History of Orlando in the period AD(After Disney) there have been two public projects that have been done exceptionally well. In a world in which the Disney Corporation makes a calculated decision not to honor Super Bowl MVP Ray Lewis with a trip to Disney World only to have Mark Chumura announce that he is going to Disney World to celebrate his escape of prison time for his hot tub romp with high school girls on prom night, one is left to ponder what the XFL will need to do to reach a public satiated with sleaze.

Is there anyone alive in the United States today who does not know that the Super Bowl is coming up on Sunday? It is Super Bowl XXXV, thirty-five in real numbers, and will be played in Tampa. One can only wonder if we will see the designation "Super Bowl L" or "Super Bowl C" or if they will be considered too timid in Logo Land. But I digress.

The death of Marty Glickman last week brought back a number of memories. In and around the New York area people recalled Glickman as voice of the Knicks and any number of other teams on New York radio sports. Across the nation, and indeed perhaps even across the world, Glickman's death brought back memories of the 1936 Olympic Games and the horror of Hitler's final solution. The latter was without a doubt more significant as it affected sport as well as the course of world history.
