The usefulness of any research is dependent upon how well the group studied represents the group about which decisions are to be made or conclusions drawn. That is, it depends upon how well the sample reflects relevant characteristics of the population. When it is possible to study every member of that group there is no problem, for on these occasions we can easily calculate the exact attribute (parameter) of interest for our population.

A Comparison Of Auctions And Multilateral Negotiations, Charles J. Thomas, Bart J. Wilson

We compare first-price auctions to an exchange process that we term 'multilateral negotiations.' In multilateral negotiations, a buyer solicits price offers for a homogeneous product from sellers with privately known costs, and then plays the sellers off one another to obtain additional price concessions. Using the experimental method, we find that with four sellers, transaction prices are statistically indistinguishable in the two institutions, but with two sellers, prices are higher in multilateral negotiations than in first-price auctions. The institutions are equally efficient with two sellers, but multilateral negotiations are slightly more efficient with four sellers.

In the organizational competition for talent, successful retention of newly recruited workers is at least as important as the initial hire. Still, many organizations fail to establish a sense of inclusion for new people in much the same way they often fail to create a sense of inclusion for people of color, women, people with foreign accents, or anyone with obvious differences from the “traditional group.” In most organizations, even those that have embarked on “diversity initiatives,” newly hired people often do not feel welcomed. Research has revealed five top problem areas: personality conflicts, confused goals, depleted trust, mismatched needs, and leadership failure. These areas consistently challenge those entities where corporate teams are present.

Since the Industrial Revolution work groups, their individual components, and relevant external forces, have been scrutinized by psychologists, sociologists, behaviorists, and business consultants. Connecting People: An Exploration Of Building An Intranet Through Autoethnography, Christopher J. Martinez

This study examines the development and failure of an Intranet at a small company in Southern Illinois. Using autoethnographic methods, I analyzed the events surrounding the development and rejection of the Intranet by the organization's president. Using Burke's concepts of identification and mystery, I analyzed the relationship between the failure of the Intranet and the president's reasoning for not supporting its development. Throughout this study I evaluate the lntranet's development, the impact of other's involvement, as well as the impact that the design of the layout could have on communication at the Company. Determinants Of Corporate Governance Disclosures By Australian Listed Companies Subsequent To The Introduction Of Asx Listing Rule 4.10.3, Lisa M. Cullen

This study has considered the incentives motivating listed mining and industrial companies to provide governance related disclosures in their annual reports. An examination is made of the impact of listing rule 4.10.3 that was applicable from 30 June 1996. Accordingly the years 1995, 1996 and 1997 are examined. A sample of 100 mining companies and 100 industrial companies was drawn primarily from the Connect 4 database of companies. Adopting political cost theory the study hypothesised that governance disclosures were positively related to the proportion of non-executive directors, gearing, ownership diffusion, Big 6 external auditor and firm size.

This study reports on the results of a study on social responsibility reporting practices of 257 listed companies on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. In addition or providing an up-to-0ate description of such practices, this study also examines some new potential determinants of corporate social responsibility reporting practices, namely the type of audit firm and financial leverage. It replicates a recent New Zealand study (Hackston and Milne, 1996).
