Now You See Me Moria (est. August 2020) is an international socially engaged art collective that brings visibility to the inhumane conditions of the Moria refugee camp, aiming to influence European Union migration policies. This paper examines the collective’s work across digital and physical gallery spaces, analyzing the role of utilitarian aesthetics in both image and process, and situating the project alongside the migratory journey of a specific member. This project report is a practical application of deconstructed repetition model, I devised by merging Augusto Boal and Baz Kershaw, in an undergraduate Composition Writing class in Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, U.S. As the facilitator Deconstructed repetition means cost-effective repetition of personal and local stories for introspection in order to engage the community members, address the oppression, and celebrate the local culture. The four stipulations of the models are: avoiding the Western canon (or hegemonic voice), making the audience(s) see direct and indirect oppression, circumventing commodification while maintaining audience interest, and celebrating local culture instead of downright criticizing it. …

Neste artigo, discuto o uso do círculo de narrativas (Roadside Theatre, 1999) denominado como um "modelo de repetição desconstruída" para o ativismo comunitário, capaz de conectar os problemas pessoais dos alunos com as questões sociais/comunitárias. Iniciei este projeto com um curso síncrono online de Redação de Textos para alunos de graduação. No semestre acadêmico do outono de 2023, universidades em todo o país testemunharam uma onda de acampamentos estudantis pedindo o cancelamento de verbas universitárias a Israel e suas operações militares (Reeve, 2023). In the spring academic semester of 2024, universities across the nation saw an uptick of student encampments asking for a divestment of university funds from Israel and its military operations (Reeve, 2023). These encampments have incited arrests of students, faculty, and community members; violent brawls between protesters and masked counter-protesters; cancellations of university graduations for the COVID-19 generation who did not get to experience their high school graduation either—and yet these encampments have also created on-campus teach-ins, opportunities for students and administrators to learn from another, and for the building of campus communities which extend beyond the classroom and school-sanctioned …

To be empowered, freed from rejection, silence and trauma, one may have no choice but to speak up. But how does the silenced speak in the presence of the oppressor? At this point, theatre (of testimony) became the most useful tool to break the silence among irregular returnees in Akuma, Ghana. Este artigo empreende um olhar histórico sobre o trabalho teatral realizado por Augusto Boal após a instauração da ditadura militar no Brasil, em 1964. Em primeiro lugar, buscaremos compreender como o trauma histórico gerado com o golpe redimensionou a prática artística socialmente engajada no país e colocou em tensão a teoria e a prática produzidas por Augusto Boal. Nessa esteira, este estudo verificou que a reflexão proposta por Boal sobre a cena brasileira possuía um fundo mais amplo e estava embebida em um movimento de crítica cultural, com vistas à criação de um programa de ação estético-política.

This essay aims to bring a historical perspective to the theatrical work carried out by Augusto Boal after the establishment of the military dictatorship in Brazil in 1964. The historical trauma generated by the coup re-dimensioned the socially engaged theatrical practice in the country. In Boal's case, it created important contradictions between his theory and practice. Along these lines, this study verified that the reflection proposed by Boal on the Brazilian scene had a broader background and was embedded in a movement of cultural criticism, with the aim of creating an aesthetic and political program of action.

Even though the concept of “Empathy” was mentioned in the earliest texts about performance, there has always been a dispute among theatre theorists in different eras regarding its impact on the audience. Although some have considered empathy as the basis of the theatre, others viewed it as a dangerous ground that can result in inappropriate and unhealthy feelings in the audience. At times when our mental health is equally as strained as our students, applied theatre may ground and guide us to support us turn our collective trauma into action and enable students to envision their individual and collective healing.
