This thesis explores the nature of the relationship between truth and text during a key moment in Castilian culture. Focusing on xiiith century historiography, supervised by King Alfonso X “el Sabio”, the thesis proposes an evolution of “textual truth” along a set of specific theoretical principles and formal (literary/rhetorical) features. The first part defines “authority” and “authorization” of the written word: Chapter 1 studies the fundamental issues surrounding the writing of History; Chapter 2 provides precedents, starting in the Bible, for an understanding of “sacred” authorship that will be recognizable in the Primera Crónica General; Chapter 3 analyzes …

This thesis compares the visual representations of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and the novels La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades and Rinconete y Cortadillo, to demonstrate their inter artistic relationship. Utilizing a base of socio-critical and semiotic theories, the construction of a reality within the works through the representations of children characters will be studied.

This dissertation furnishes an analysis of the unfolding twenty-first century neobaroque phenomenon. Thus this disquisition delves through assorted cultural artifacts from the current digital era as well as manifestations of neobaroque motifs; these virtual baroques of the twenty-first century range from memento mori, video games, social networking sites and the sponsors of these neobaroque manifestations--the corporations, a baroque legacy. Literary Africa: Spanish Reflections Of Morocco, Western Sahara, And Equatorial Guinea In The Contemporary Novel, 1990-2010, Mahan L. Ellison

This dissertation analyzes the strategies that Spanish and Hispano-African authors employ when writing about Africa in the contemporary novel (1990-2010). Focusing on the former Spanish colonial territories of Morocco, Western Sahara, and Equatorial Guinea, I analyze the post-colonial literary discourse about these regions. This study examines the new ways of conceptualizing Africa that depart from an Orientalist framework as advanced by the novelists Lorenzo Silva, Concha López Sarasúa, Ramón Mayrata, María Dueñas, Fernando Gamboa, Montserrat Abumalham, Javier Reverte, Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa, and Donato Ndongo. This paper is part of the academic effort to recover historical memory in post-Civil War Spain and metaphorically applies the so-called Giobert Tincture to Carmen Martín Gaite’s El cuarto de atrás (1978), Dulce Chacón’s La voz dormida (2002) and Pedro Almodóvar’s La mala educación (2004) in order show how these works reveal the ghosts of the repression exerted against the epitome of the abject/obscene by Franco’s dictatorship: the queer collective. This collective continues to suffer from marginalization as well as from the effects of repression. Originally explored in literature and film, the theme of historical memory has not only become more visible and more explicit, but has taken the leap from art and literature into the political realm to become one of Spain's most pressing political issues.

The Function Of Desire In The Legends Of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Kimberly Anne Aaron

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the function of desire in the legends of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. In ten of the fifteen legends, the protatonists are led by a misguided desire for something out of the ordinary, rejecting societal norms or common sense, to the point of self- and other-destructiveness. The protagonists create false realities for themselves in which they believe they will be able to conquer their desires with no consequences to themselves or to others. Analyses of desire by psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, philosopher David Hume, and other theologians and thinkers informed this work. …
