Además, fue uno de los primeros textos de este tipo en ser traducido al idioma inglés (1925).

There are two key moments when the Amazon is used as the setting for Brazilian science fiction, both during periods of dictatorship in the twentieth century. The first takes place during the authoritarian government of Getúlio Vargas (1930-1945), the second after the decades-long push for modernization and technological change imposed by the military government from 1964 to 1985. My study shows that, for writers of the first half of the twentieth century, the Amazon is a place of adventure, a setting for stories whose imaginative events ignore the region’s anthropology, history and indigenous cultures. A través del análisis de la novela Synco de Jorge Baradit y el cuento "Exerion" de Pablo Castro, se propone el uso de la literatura de ciencia ficción como vehículo para la curación de traumas producidos por la dictadura chilena de Augusto Pinochet. Los autores creen que a través del extrañamiento y la heterotopía, la ciencia ficción puede ser útil y pertinente a lo que se ha venido a llamar como literatura del trauma.

In the years following the military dictatorship in Argentina many novels were published that spoke about the violence, terror, and traumas experienced during the Junta's rule. These texts deal with the theme of memory and retell the traumas of the past as a form of mourning. Such novels look back to the past in an effort to redeem it. Este libro analiza el mito de la sentimentalidad gallega desde finales del siglo XIX hasta la época presente. Miguélez-Carballeira demuestra cómo este tópico se ha utilizado de manera recurrente por distintas ideologías políticas, desde el regionalismo apolítico gallego hasta el nacionalismo cultural franquista y el centralismo conservador del Partido Popular. This work analyses the colonial racial discourses that are apparent in the novel Noli Me Tángere by Filipino revolutionary José Rizal. The essay proposes that the novel should be viewed through the same lens as that of a Latin American “foundational fiction,” as defined by Doris Sommer, as the repetition of various romantic tropes that plays with the power dynamic between the male enlightened revolutionary and the passive native female prize. This sabbatical leave is of both a personal and a professional nature. I will be moving to Costa Rica with my children and spouse, where I will experience day to day family life, take courses toward a master's degree in Latin American Studies, and improve my understanding of the Spanish language and of one of the cultures in which it is spoken.

The translations of French historian and politique Pierre Matthieu fostered the circulation of ideas on the best practices of government and stimulated the introduction of political theories such as reason of state, political prudence and sovereignty at a moment when all Europe struggled to reconcile the interests of state and religion. This paper explores the social changes, divisions, and hierarchies that are present in Antonia Palacios’ novel Ana Isabel, una niña decente (1949). Employing Marxist Literary Theory as a basis for investigation and analysis, the paper illustrates the complexities of class and race, ultimately demonstrating how these two concepts are both intimately related and interdependent. As a result of the transition from feudalism to capitalism within Venezuelan society, longstanding traditions of social status and power are threatened, leading some to attempt to manipulate social structures concerning class and race in order to preserve family prestige. This paper attempts to show how the fantastic authors Leopoldo Lugones and Jorge Luis Borges expressed different viewpoints about science and technology through their short stories. These Argentine authors are among Latin America’s most famous authors in the genre of the fantastic. However, these two literary luminaries diverged greatly with regard to their opinion about the role of science in society.
