Pasión Y Deseo: Del Amor Y La Sexualidad En Poemas Selectos De Octavio Paz Y Rosario Castellanos, María Cristina Campos Fuentes
Pasión Y Deseo: Del Amor Y La Sexualidad En Poemas Selectos De Octavio Paz Y Rosario Castellanos, María Cristina Campos Fuentes
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation studies selected poems written between 1950 and 1975 by Octavio Paz and Rosario Castellanos, two major Mexican writers of the twentieth century. Paz is considered one of the leading figures of Mexican literature, while Castellanos gained prominence in her homeland as a feminist figure. Using close reading as the predominant approach, this study investigates the complex issues of love and sexuality from the perspective of the poetical voice. It also emphasizes the manner in which the boundaries produced by love and sexuality underscore certain ambiguities. Indeed, these two poets search for identity and happiness in various ways, while …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Brigham Young University's Golden Age Theater Production And Outreach Course, Sheila Jan Barton
Theses and Dissertations
The present research consists of a comparative study of Brigham Young University's Golden Age Comedia (GAC) and Golden Age Theater Production (GATP) courses. The two courses cover much of the same academic material, but one of the differences between the two approaches to the teaching of Golden Age literature is that the GATP course incorporates a theater production and outreach component. Although this outreach program has been seen as intuitively and anecdotally effective, there has been no prior attempt to document student motivation for choosing this course over the traditionally taught course (GAC), nor to discover any of the outcomes …

Phonological Facilitation Through Translation In A Bilingual Picture-Naming Task, Paul Amrhein, Aimee Knupsky
Phonological Facilitation Through Translation In A Bilingual Picture-Naming Task, Paul Amrhein, Aimee Knupsky
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
We present a critical examination of phonological effects in a picture-word interference task. Using a methodology minimizing stimulus repetition, English/Spanish and Spanish/English bilinguals named pictures in either L1 or L2 (blocked contexts) or in both (mixed contexts) while ignoring word distractors in L1 or L2. Distractors were either phonologically related to the picture name (direct; FISH–fist), or related through translation to the picture name (TT; LEG–milk–leche), or they were unrelated (bear–peach). Results demonstrate robust activation of phonological representations by translation equivalents of word distractors. Although both direct and TT distractors facilitated naming, TT facilitation was more consistent in L2 naming …

Information Gap Activities: A Standards-Based Strategy For Promoting Oral Proficiency In A Thematic Context, Paul A. Garcia, Todd A. Hernandez
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
This article demonstrates how the sustained use of standards-driven information gap activities (IGAs) supports and enhances the development of speaking skills. In the first section, we define the IGA. We then discuss recent research showing how IGAs promote focused student-student interactions. In the third section we provide a blueprint for implementing the IGA in a standards-based thematic context. We conclude with content-based models from a thematic unit on Argentina that are appropriate for both secondary and post-secondary classrooms.

Understanding The Feelings, Perceptions, And Attitudes Of Students Who Participate In A Service Study Abroad Program, Jennifer Jean Jackson
Understanding The Feelings, Perceptions, And Attitudes Of Students Who Participate In A Service Study Abroad Program, Jennifer Jean Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to understand the experience of being a service study abroad student. It examined feelings, perceptions and attitudes that developed as students from Brigham Young University participated in a service-centered study abroad program to Guadalajara, Mexico. The study enumerates participants' initial, developing, and final impressions during service study abroad and shows that students go through an extensive process of discovering, reformulating, and solidifying their attitudes and perceptions as they interpret their experiences. The study examined factors related to language and culture, but focused on the service component of the program. It found that service study abroad participants …

World Languages and Cultures

World Languages and Cultures
This essay presents a historical review of the poetic production in Venezuela in the 30's and 40's. It reviews the role that "Viernes," a poetic group, had in developing the modern literary movements in Venezuelan literature. The impact that several members of the group had while in and then later after their departure from the group is examined. Equally, the poetic influences inherited by the group, both national and international, are discussed. Finally, the essay deals with the dissolution of the group and its impact in the literature of Venezuela and Latin America after World War II.

Beyond Fidelity: The Translation Process In Two Adaptations Of Juan Marsé’S El Embrujo De Shanghai, Jessie Louise Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
In the past, the study of film adapted from literature has focused largely on the question of fidelity. This thesis explores new ways to look at the relationship between literature and film by showing how concepts from the field of translation studies, particularly literary translation, can enrich the study of adaptation theory. An application is made to the case of Spanish novelist Juan Marsé’s work El embrujo de Shanghai, which has been adapted to film by Fernando Trueba and to screenplay by Victor Érice. Rather than taking a hierarchical approach to the novel and its two variations, a comparative approach …
