Writing In The Aftermath Of War: Literature And Disenchantment In Postwar Central America, Nanci Buiza Apr 2025

Writing In The Aftermath Of War: Literature And Disenchantment In Postwar Central America, Nanci Buiza

Spanish Faculty Works

This article examines the challenges faced by Central American writers during a period of profound cultural, political, and economic change, as Central America transitioned from an era of civil war and revolutionary struggle to one of peace, democracy, and neoliberal state-building, spanning from the 1990s to the 2010s. At the core of this change was a pervasive sense of disenchantment, understood not merely as disillusionment with the failures of the peacebuilding process but as a hollowing out of society’s capacity to envision Central American reality on a broader and more meaningful scale. This deeper, more intractable aspect of disenchantment and …

Argentina: Crisis, Conurbano Y Literatura. Cuatro Novelas Del Primer Decenio Del Siglo Veintiuno Y Su Relación Con La Crisis Y El Espacio Bonaerense, Luciano Martínez

Safeguarding El Salvador’S Transition To Peace And Democracy: A View From The Cultural And Political Magazine Tendencias (1991–2000), Nanci Buiza

Spanish Faculty Works

This article examines the role that the cultural and political magazine Tendencias (1991-2000) played in El Salvador’s transition to peace. Specifically, it studies how Tendencias’s contributors tackled some of the key issues of the transition—the failure to reform the economy, the undermining of the peace process by economic and political elites, and the inability of the FMLN to respond to the new political situation—and argues that the magazine served as a counter to El Salvador’s culture of ideological entrenchment. By fostering democratic and rational-critical discussion, Tendencias opened up a new “public sphere” for El Salvador and gave voice to a …

La Música Popular Argentina Entre El Campo Y La Ciudad: Música Campera, Criolla, Nativa, Folklórica, Canción Federal Y Tango, Julia Chindemi Vila, P. Vila

In the early twentieth century tango functioned as an important cultural artifact in defense of the integration of the newly arrived European immigrants into the nation. Until it achieved its hegemony in the late 1930s, tango shared popularity with the so-called “canción criolla” (creole song), which commercially competed with great success until the mid-1930s. This type of music was the traditional music of the gaucho, who while physically disappearing from the countryside, was symbolically reinstated as the core of Argentine nationality by the “criollista” movement, promoted by the Argentine elite. At that time tango continuously mix, in a very complex …

Dh Redesign Of An Existing Introductory Literature Survey, Eli Cohen Oct 2016

Dh Redesign Of An Existing Introductory Literature Survey, Eli Cohen

Spanish Faculty Works

This assignment represents an initial attempt to redesign Spanish 022, an introductory survey of Spanish literature from the Middle Ages through the present, in a manner that integrates digital tools with literary and historical scholarship at the undergraduate level. In addition to more traditional methods of critical analysis, students will be asked to engage with and develop complementary modes of thinking about and presenting the history of Spanish literature through practices associated with ‘distant reading’ and the development of a digital exhibition consisting of a visual and textual chronology of Spanish literature from its origins through the twenty-first century. The …

Rodrigo Rey Rosa’S El Material Humano And The Labyrinth Of Postwar Guatemala: On Ethics, Truth, And Justice, Nanci Buiza Oct 2016

Rodrigo Rey Rosa’S El Material Humano And The Labyrinth Of Postwar Guatemala: On Ethics, Truth, And Justice, Nanci Buiza

Spanish Faculty Works

Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s El material humano (2009) grapples with the consequences of Guatemala’s violent past by probing into a once-secret police archive that brings into the present the sufferings of the past. This article demonstrates how the novel unsettles our easy assumptions regarding the relation between documentary truth and the notions of justice and reconciliation. By charting the protagonist’s intellectual and emotional conflicts, I argue that his crisis ultimately serves a homeopathic function that makes possible a special mode of ethical engagement, one which brings into fruitful tension two distinct modes of cognition—thought and affect—and is thus able to register …

Pas De Deux: La Mutua Lectura De Octavio Paz Y Robert Motherwell, Aurora Camacho De Schmidt Jan 2010

Pas De Deux: La Mutua Lectura De Octavio Paz Y Robert Motherwell, Aurora Camacho De Schmidt
