Paraguay has long been seen as one of the forgotten corners of the globe, a place that slips beneath the radar of most diplomats, academics, journalists, and tourists in Latin America. Paraguay is a country defined not so much by association as by isolation. The renowned Paraguayan writer Augusto Roa Bastos famously remarked that Paraguay’s landlocked isolation made it like an island surrounded by land. Yet Paraguay is developing and globalizing fast. There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. An understanding of what leads to the possible weaknesses in the grammar of early bilinguals can contribute to our understanding of the possible causes of the apparent characteristic ‘failures’ in second language acquisition (Montrul 2008). Spanish has a gender feature for nouns (Carroll 1989) and gender agreement for determiners and adjectives. From the early fifteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century, the Spanish colonial process involved the settling of vast tracks of land. From their first colonial experiment in the Canary Islands in 1402, the Spanish administration learned that it was sometimes more effective to import assimilated settlers from already established colonial possessions than to attempt massive conversion and cultural assimilation. To shore up the vast spaces of the northern Gulf Coast, particularly "West Florida" and eastern Texas, the Spanish governors sent for colonists including groups of Canary Islanders who settled outposts along the Red River, as well as …

For that reason, it is essential to introduce Graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs) to their duties as Second Language Instructors before they begin their teaching role. Mexican temporary migrants in Canada: a sociolinguistic approach Canada is well recognized because of its immigration policies and settlement programs that include ESL classes that help newcomers in its adaptation and integration process, recognizing in this way that linguistic competence is crucial for the social inclusion and engagement of migrants. However, migratory laws do not contemplate these kinds of help for temporary migrants that come from Mexico and the Caribbean through the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SWAP). El español en contacto con otras lenguas is the first comprehensive historical, social, and linguistic overview of Spanish in contact with other languages in all of its major contexts—in Spain, the United States, and Latin America. This book explores the historical and social factors that have shaped contact varieties of the Spanish language, synthesizing the principle arguments and theories about language contact, and examining linguistic changes in Spanish phonology, morphology and syntax, and pragmatics.

A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Final /S/ In Miami Cuban Spanish, Andrew Lynch

This study analyzes the variation of syllable- and word-final /s/ among two generations of Cubans in Miami, Florida (USA): older, early exile immigrants who arrived in Miami as adults in the 1960s and 1970s, and young Miami-born Cubans whose maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated to Miami from Cuba prior to 1980. Since sibilant weakening is generally considered to be an ongoing language change in Caribbean Spanish, it was hypothesized that the young generation of English-dominant bilinguals would present with much higher rates of aspiration and deletion, in keeping with Carmen Silva-Corvalán’s (1994) hypothesis that linguistic changes are accelerated in situations …

Expression Of Cultural Standing In Miami: Cuban Spanish Discourse About Fidel Castro And Cuba, Andrew Lynch

This study draws upon Claudia Strauss’ (2004) model of cultural standing to analyze opinions regarding Fidel Castro and US-Cuba relations among three major groups of Miami Cubans, identified according to their time of immigration: early 1960s exiles, ‘Marielitos’ and their children (1980 exiles), and the younger generation (Miami-born grandchildren of 1960s exiles). I argue that the discourse features used to convey differing ideological stances on sending aid to Cuba or visiting the Island are reflective of two rather distinct ‘opinion communities’ in Cuban Miami. To that end, I explore the relationship between processes of simplification in the Spanish verb system …

The sociolinguistic realities of English and Spanish, at the national and world levels, have evolved in fundamental ways since the 1960s. Traditional theoretical models of language variation, bilingualism, and language shift in the US must be reconceptualized with the post-2000 context, and Spanish language educators must respond to the contemporary demands of their profession. In this essay, I give thought to the theoretical principles of Spanish heritage language acquisition in the US in the twenty-first century.
