The Logic Of Affective Economics In Philippine Fans’ Discursive Articulations In Response To A League Of Legends Skin Sale, Manuel R. Enverga Iii
European Studies Department Faculty Publications
This study has employed a single case study approach to examine how Filipino League of Legends (LoL) fans reacted to sale of a skin; or character cosmetic; to raise awareness for the Taal Volcano eruption in 2020. The promotion was posted on Facebook and received over 9,000 reactions. It also received over 1,000 comments; which served as the data source for this study. Following a discourse analysis of relevant comments; the researcher has found that commenters’ articulations were underpinned by the logic of affective economics. Responses to the skin promotion either exemplified brand loyalty towards League of Legends or expressed …
The Orient In The Empire’S Poetry: Scholarship, Translation, And Imaginative Geography (1770-1857), Zeeshan Riyaz Reshamwala
The Orient In The Empire’S Poetry: Scholarship, Translation, And Imaginative Geography (1770-1857), Zeeshan Riyaz Reshamwala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses the idea of imaginative geography to study literary and scholarly representations of what writers in Europe referred to as the Orient during the long nineteenth century. Imaginative geography refers to a subjective collection of associations that accumulate around a place about which positive knowledge is limited, such that the imaginative associations overpower and structure any empirical knowledge about it, even when further knowledge is acquired. The imaginative geography of the Orient emerged from texts, images, and artifacts that traveled from Asia to Europe through sustained colonial contact. This dissertation studies how writers in India and Britain constituted, …

The Diffusion Of Identity : A Study Of Three Contemporary Thai Short Stories Through The Lens Of Western Narrative Conventions, Sean Ford
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Literary works give expression to universal themes through settings, subjects, and techniques that are culturally tied. This article reviews generic conventions involving point of view, protagonist, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution that typify Western short stories in order to examine how varying patterns can illuminate cultural contrasts between Thailand and the West. Widely known stories by Katherine Mansfield and Amy Tan serve to exemplify the conventional Western pattern and its versatility and to provide a basis for discovering alternative patterns that characterize numerous contemporary Thai short stories. An analysis of stories by S.E.A. Write award winners Phaitoon …

Connecting Faith Through Theatre : Barazan’Yee As A Semi-Ritual Performance In Thai Muslim Communities, Khalid Midam
Connecting Faith Through Theatre : Barazan’Yee As A Semi-Ritual Performance In Thai Muslim Communities, Khalid Midam
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This research paper examines the creative process used to connect young Muslims with their experience, their faith, and their community through a community-based performance. It also stresses the different levels of connections that resulted from the performance itself. The author sought to reconnect Barazan’yee, an important Arabic poetic chant, to people in the Bangkok Islamic community using tools from community theatre. The performance design process allowed them to tell their own story in relation to Bar’zanyee poetry in ways that are meaningful to them and their community, thus connecting their lives to the life of Prophet Muhammad. The first …

Hoamroang Sam Prasan : The Overture Of Three Southern Cultures Concept From The Viewpoint Of An Intercultural Composer And Musician, Sinnapa Sarasas
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article examines the process of combining three distinct traditional music cultures in Pattani, Thailand, into one piece of music. The author was the music director of the “Hoamroang Sam Prasan” (Overture: Harmony of the Three). Since the three musical traditions – Nora, Rong Ngeng and Digir Hulu, and Chinese drums ensemble – are similar yet different, the work was both easy and difficult. As someone with long experience in intercultural music, I developed a distinct way to do collaborative work. I seek to ensure musicians contribute their best to the piece, establish bonds of trust to co-operate, so they …
Thai Elf Users’ Characteristics Of Relative Clauses, Napasri Timyam
Thai Elf Users’ Characteristics Of Relative Clauses, Napasri Timyam
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
To build up the empirical description of elf’s morphosyntactic system, this study examines Thai elf users’ characteristics of relative clauses and analyses the causes underlying their use of the construction. Data were taken from the writing of 116 advanced and upper-intermediate English majors at a university in Bangkok. The results indicated that Thai elf users’ relative clauses exhibit preferences for unmarked and explicit structures. Both linguistic and functional causes are responsible for their production of the construction: they form relative clauses full of basic and transparent structures in order to ensure simple and successful communication. The overall results reveal the …
Historiographic Metafiction And The Metaphysical Detective In Roberto Bolaño’S Amulet, Rhys William Tyers
Historiographic Metafiction And The Metaphysical Detective In Roberto Bolaño’S Amulet, Rhys William Tyers
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Roberto Bolaño’s Amulet explores the writing of history as an attempt to construct a narrative from a multitude of unreliable and conflicting sources. As a result, any attempt at historiography is also plagued by the problems of representation found in literature. More particularly, not unlike detective fiction, history is concerned with identifying the inspirations and actions of its players and with revealing the truth about an episode or series of episodes, using historical information, all of which may or may not be reliable. By examining the relationship between the historical and the fictional in Amulet this paper will discuss Bolaño’s …
Laughter As Strategies In Business Communication Between Thai And Burmese Professionals, Tabtip Kanchanapoomi, Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk
Laughter As Strategies In Business Communication Between Thai And Burmese Professionals, Tabtip Kanchanapoomi, Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Laughter is not just an element in human communication that signifies happiness and enjoyment, it can be used as a communication strategy to lubricate successful interaction including business communication. Nonetheless, not many studies have paid attention to laughter in business communication. Therefore, this paper sheds light on how Thai and Burmese participants used laughter in a restaurant and in a business meeting in Yangon, Myanmar. Audio data was collected together with various pieces of ethnographic data, for example, participant observations reported from extensive field notes, semi-structured interviews and audio recordings. The analysis was based on the classification of laughter adopted …
Perspectives On Malay Language Use And Autonym Preference Among Urban Malays In South Thailand, Christopher M. Joll, Srawut Aree
Perspectives On Malay Language Use And Autonym Preference Among Urban Malays In South Thailand, Christopher M. Joll, Srawut Aree
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article offers theoretical and ethnographic perspectives on language ideology and autonym preference among bi-lingual urban Malays in Pattani’s provincial capital. The first of its two substantive sections presents a concise summary of the most relevant insights provided by linguistic anthropologists and sociolinguists who have written on language ideology and the role of language in identity formation. The primary purpose of the second section is to explore the heuristic utility of these theoretical insights on a range of ethnographic vignettes where a range of language-related issues have historically represented a significant source of mistrust between the local Malay majority and …
Gender And Working Roles In Television Commercials : A Comparison Between Japanese And Thai Television Commercials, Piya Pongsapitaksanti
Gender And Working Roles In Television Commercials : A Comparison Between Japanese And Thai Television Commercials, Piya Pongsapitaksanti
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The research objective is to examine the similarities and differences of gender and working roles in Japanese and Thai television commercials. The research methodology focuses on content analysis. Seven hundred and sixty advertisements shown during 2016 in Japan and Thailand were analyzed. As a result, this comparative content analysis suggests a possible reversal from traditional patterns in the literature. Though the proportion of working women in Thailand is higher than the proportion in Japan, the proportions of working women in Japanese and Thai television commercials are insignificantly different. Moreover, this research result reveals the new appearance of non-stereotypical gender images …

Multilingualism, Bi/Multilingual Education And Social Inclusion : A Case Study In Southern Thailand, Suwilai Premsrirat, Mirinda Burarungrot
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
In a multicultural-multilingual society, inclusion requires equitable access to quality education as stated – UN Sustainable Development Goals, target 4 (sdg4). In the deep south of Thailand, the majority Muslim population speak Patani Malay in daily life, making language identity an issue as it is not recognized for official use. Students are required to study in Thai and as a result have the lowest academic achievement in the country. Furthermore, parents and the community have no confidence in government schools and some even fear that education is being used to destroy their ethnic identity. This paper presents a participatory action …
The Role Of Entertainment Media In Promoting Culture : The Case Of Japanese Cartoons And Superhero Tv Series In 80s-90s Thai Society, Thanayod Lopattananont
The Role Of Entertainment Media In Promoting Culture : The Case Of Japanese Cartoons And Superhero Tv Series In 80s-90s Thai Society, Thanayod Lopattananont
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This research delved into the specificity of Japanese cartoons and superhero tv series during the 80s-90s based on two questions; how their content familiarized the Thai audience with the culture of Japan and what impact they have delivered. Content analysis, audience analysis, and document research were used as the research methodology. The discovery suggested that Japanese cartoons and superhero tv series were culturally powerful. Their presentation of the local culture was comprehensible, repetitive, and joyous, causing the audience to be connected to the culture of Japan with ease. Each cartoon and superhero tv series also possessed high entertainment quality that …

“[T]Hat Monstrous Machine Of His” : The Machine Metaphor In John Cleland’S Memoir Of A Woman Of Pleasure, Choedphong Uttama
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
John Cleland’s Memoir of a Woman of Pleasure (1748–49), commonly known as Fanny Hill, is regarded as the first pornographic novel in English literature. Its description of sexual activities is explicit but its language is not coarse. It employs a wide range of metaphors to refer to both sexual acts and genitalia and the metaphor used most frequently to refer to the penis is “the machine.” The machine metaphor will be the focus of this paper, which aims to argue that the machine metaphor carries two meanings. The first is the machine as one of military metaphors common in …
Against Hostile Nature : The Roles Of Magic And Science In Thailand’S Cave Rescue, Kanya Wattanagun
Against Hostile Nature : The Roles Of Magic And Science In Thailand’S Cave Rescue, Kanya Wattanagun
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The rescue mission at Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand, presents a scenario in which magical rituals and technical knowledge were marshaled against hostile natural conditions. While practical endeavors were made to mitigate the risks and impediments posed by malign weather and topographical features of the cave, myths and rituals were enacted to control unruly factors not subject to human manipulation. In this paper, I argue that: 1) Magical rituals at Tham Luang cave did not originate from the participants’ confidence in the reality of supernatural beings but from their attempt to use alternative approaches to remedy a precarious …
Unmaking Masculine Determinacy : A Postmodern Challenge In Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Usa Padgate
Unmaking Masculine Determinacy : A Postmodern Challenge In Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Usa Padgate
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Venus, a play written by Suzan-Lori Parks, employs unconventional theatrical approaches in retelling the history of a 19th-century freak show attraction. This study examines how the critique of gender bias and sexual manipulations in Venus is explored and projected in ways that can be described as postmodern. Through the subversion of conventional forms and language, the blending of fact and fiction, the pastiches of both low and high generic and linguistic presentations, the liberating of a marginalized voice, and the revision of the philosophical premises that subordinate the female to the male order, the play questions the masculine determinacy …
Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong
Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Viewing language as a system consisting of grammatical resources for meaning making, this study explores how agency and responsibility are attributed in legal narratives through the lens of transitivity. Drawing upon the opening address of three American trials, the quantitative and qualitative findings indicate that agency and blameworthiness of the individuals on trial are discursively negotiated through starkly different grammatical choices, so that polarized positionings of the same social actors and events are accomplished for the audience. It is argued that such manipulation of grammatical resources exhibits subjective intervention on the part of the presenter and constitutes a prime mechanism …
Survival And Sovereignty : Forces On The Rise In Aurelio Tolentino’S Novels, Loida L. Garcia
Survival And Sovereignty : Forces On The Rise In Aurelio Tolentino’S Novels, Loida L. Garcia
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Aurelio Tolentino (1869–1915) is best remembered as the first nationalist dramatist who was in and out of prison because of his mutinous writings. His five extant novels manifest the sociopolitical struggle of early 20th-century Filipinos from the worldview of a versatile author. Tolentino’s fiction from 1909 to 1914 unveils how the colonized adapted ingrained, rigid, and conventional Spanish influences to the liberal and materialistic scheme imposed by the United States. A sociohistorical approach was used to investigate Tolentino’s narratives, revealing a people with a pliant but firm character brought about by their four centuries of subjugation. The literary method used …
Education Of Migrant Children From Myanmar In Thai Government Schools, Thithimadee Arphattananon
Education Of Migrant Children From Myanmar In Thai Government Schools, Thithimadee Arphattananon
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
At the dawn of the 1990s, Thailand began to accept migrant workers from neighboring countries, namely Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia to work in labor sectors to meet with the high demand for manpower due to rapid economic development. Thirty years since the early batches of migrant workers entered the country, the number of migrant workers steadily increased and reached 3.9 million in 2018. Among this number, approximately 390,015 were children. Around thirty-five percent of these children were enrolled in Thai government schools. As the government school is a place where government policy and national ideology are manifested, this paper explores …
A Case Study Of Code-Switching Among Thai Waiters In A Cambridge, Uk Restaurant, Nicola Prin
A Case Study Of Code-Switching Among Thai Waiters In A Cambridge, Uk Restaurant, Nicola Prin
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This study explores Thai bilingual speakers’ code-switching in a formal work setting. Although code-switching may appear to be random, there is an underlying choice which speakers decide upon when switching between languages: Language proficiency, the initial speaker’s language choice, the setting, and role relationships all contribute to these choices. This study investigates the factors contributing to code-switch decisions by participants within their specific work environment. The main findings show that adopting one language over the other depends on two main factors: first, the initial sequence of the interaction; second, the role relationship that the participants wish to maintain. This study …
Mindfulness And Motivation In Self-Transformation : Thich Nhat Hanh’S Teachings On The Interbeing, Hui Ling Lim
Mindfulness And Motivation In Self-Transformation : Thich Nhat Hanh’S Teachings On The Interbeing, Hui Ling Lim
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This paper aims to explore the relationship of mindfulness and motivation in self-transformation based on the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. It discusses mind and meditation, the application and impact of mindfulness on body and mind, the Buddhist’s roots of motivation in meditation, the dynamics of motivation in mindfulness practice and Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings on interbeing. He argues that it is not necessary to hold the original Buddhist intention with the goal to attain enlightenment when practicing mindfulness because mindfulness is not only a means but also an end in itself. My discussion will highlight this interconnectedness of mindfulness …

May Tiktik Sa Bubong, Allan N. Derain

The study examines the motif of ominous bird calls auguring the coming of aswang; from the historical accounts of Antonio Pigafetta and Fr. Jose Castaño; the ethnographic notes of Frank Lynch; and the Panay-Bukidnon epic “Hinilawud.” The comparative reading of these texts configures a critical response to the notion of the community of listeners failing to become credible earwitness as they have misconstrued their own soundscape - a rationalization of the supernatural usually held by etic observers of such communities. The critical analysis follows the dynamics operating in the aswang-bird tandem and the ambiguous role the bird plays in the …
Understanding The Human Condition Through The Depiction Of Protagonists In Crime And Mystery Novels, Kevalin Kaewruean
Understanding The Human Condition Through The Depiction Of Protagonists In Crime And Mystery Novels, Kevalin Kaewruean
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Extant criticism of crime and mystery fiction has indicated how protagonists have freedom of choice in dealing with difficult situations in different forms of risky or challenging settings. In this article, previous criticism is evaluated in terms of its reflection of an essential element of the human condition: the Self’s free will to construct the existential and spatial meanings of its phenomenological existence in relation to the Other. The article further indicates that protagonists tend to disregard their freedom and responsibility for their actions, especially when they make existential choices in traumatic or critical situations. Additionally, the dominance of others …

Gender Identification In Language Other Than Mother-Tongue : A Case Of Non-Thai Listeners Deciphering A Thai Male Speaker’S Gender, Savitri Gadavanij
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This paper explores what factors contribute to distinguishing gay sounding and straight man sounding speech; linguistic cognate or social knowledge and whether the gender of listeners also determines ability in identification. To answer these questions, 286 participants were classified by nationality into 3 groups of participants: Thai listeners as a control group, Zhuang, and Other listeners. They were asked to listen to 12 voice stimuli in Thai from straight and gay men and identify the gender of the speakers. The outcome revealed that the accuracy rate in identifying a speaker’s gender varied among the 3 groups of listeners with Thai …

The Fragmentation Of Religious Authority In Provincial Towns In Indonesia: The Case Of The Mui (Indonesian Muslim Scholar Council) In Pekanbaru And Pontianak, Imron Rosidi, Yasril Yazid, Amril -
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article discusses the fragmentation of religious authority in Pekanbaru and Pontianak, Indonesia, focusing on the local mui (Indonesian Muslim Scholar Council). Employing qualitative methods, the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru experience similar religious authority fragmentation due to the human agency. Members of the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru represent Islamic organisations in Indonesia’s fight for the religious authority of their Islamic organisations, not for the cohesion of religious authority in the mui. Because religious authority has the desired will, it is no wonder that outside the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru many Muslim figures struggle to preserve it. Individuals challenge the religious …
