The Acquisition Of Passives By Thai Preschoolers, Kitima Indrambarya Jan 2024

The Acquisition Of Passives By Thai Preschoolers, Kitima Indrambarya

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study investigates how pre-school Thai children comprehend Thai short and long passives with adversative and non-adversative and action and psychological verbs. The results show that preschool children did not comprehend passives well, primarily because of the thematic role reversal in the subjects of passives and actives. Action verbs are acquired earlier and better than psychological verbs. Unlike previous studies of other languages, Thai children comprehend long passives better than short passives with most verb types.

Cultural-Religious Dimensions Of The ‘Ritual Issue’ In Pre-Colonial Vietnamese And Western Interactions, Nguyen Quang Hung, Nguyen Dinh Lam Jan 2024

Cultural-Religious Dimensions Of The ‘Ritual Issue’ In Pre-Colonial Vietnamese And Western Interactions, Nguyen Quang Hung, Nguyen Dinh Lam

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Through a meticulous examination of edicts issued by both imperial courts and Christian missionaries, this article posits that the ‘ritual issue’ – i.e., the divergence in ritualistic practices and values between Christianity and indigenous religions – constituted a principal obstacle to the proliferation of Christianity in Vietnam between the 17th and 19th centuries. Notably, the paper identifies a substantive transformation in the perception of the ‘ritual issue.’ During the 17th and 18th centuries under the Trịnh-Nguyễn lords, the issue was predominantly approached through a cultural-religious lens. However, in the 19th century under the Nguyễn dynasty, the issue acquired a cultural-political …

The Impact Of Inter-Basin Water Transfer Between Johor And Singapore On Johor’S Water Supply System, 1927 To 1941, Mohd Firdaus Abdullah, Ruhana Padzil, Arba’Iyah Mohd Noor, Mardiana Nordin Jan 2024

The Impact Of Inter-Basin Water Transfer Between Johor And Singapore On Johor’S Water Supply System, 1927 To 1941, Mohd Firdaus Abdullah, Ruhana Padzil, Arba’Iyah Mohd Noor, Mardiana Nordin

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Inter-basin water transfer between Johor and Singapore from 1927 to 1941 had a significant impact on Johor’s water supply system. This study aims to assess the consequences of this transfer and provide a contemporary perspective on its implications. Existing research on inter-basin transfers and their impact on water systems between Singapore and Johor is abundant, but there is a notable lack of research specifically addressing Johor’s water system during this time. By examining the historical context and socio-economic dynamics that shaped the inter-basin transfer, this study aims to contribute a unique perspective to the existing body of knowledge. The findings …

A Battle On Social Media : Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Sampradaya In Bali, I Wayan Numertayasa, Anang Santoso, Moch Syahri, Pande Agus Adiwijaya

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study focuses on the discourse battle on Facebook between two ideological perspectives on the existence of Sampradaya in Bali. Sampradaya refers to the Hindu spiritual community in Bali which has been adopting new traditions and practices from India since 1980. Since then, their presence in Bali has faced opposition, including the prohibition of Hare Krishna literature and the closure of Hare Krishna learning centers. Starting in 2019, this resistance has created a battleground of conflicting narratives that influence the public. This research aims to comprehend the representation of ideological perspectives and discourse battle strategies within the Sampradaya discourse on …

From Victory To Democracy : The “Democracy” In Thailand’S Victory Monument, Gil Turingan Jan 2024

From Victory To Democracy : The “Democracy” In Thailand’S Victory Monument, Gil Turingan

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper discusses the symbolic transformation of Thailand’s Victory Monument in the Thai public memory, from embodying militarism to representing the complicated concept of Thai democracy. In the beginning, the monument had an indirect connection to democracy. However, due to the spatial agency, such as protest activities occupying this structure, it has turned into one of Bangkok’s democratic spaces. By looking at the stories of contentious politics and narratives surrounding this structure, this study reveals that the development of the Victory Monument’s meanings mirrors the democratic struggles of the Thai people. It also applies prevailing discourses on Thai democracy to …

Anaphoric Expressions In Thai Narratives : A Corpus Study On Accessibility And Distributional Tendency, Nimit Kumwapee, Nattanun Chanchaochai Jan 2024

Anaphoric Expressions In Thai Narratives : A Corpus Study On Accessibility And Distributional Tendency, Nimit Kumwapee, Nattanun Chanchaochai

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study examines the relationship between Thai anaphoric expressions and their antecedents’ Accessibility, analyzing 3,453 expressions from Thai-Zlatev Corpus (Zlatev and Yangklang 2001), Aakanee Website (Aakanee, “Thai Recordings”) and Thai Folktale Database (Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, “Folktales”). Grounded in Ariel’s Accessibility Theory (1988, 1990), which asserts that referring expressions are universally arranged on an Accessibility scale but marking systems vary by language, we propose an Accessibility Marking Scale for Thai anaphoric expressions, informed by the factors of Distance, Competition, Saliency and Unity. Some anaphoric expressions showed no significant differences in mean Accessibility, leading them to share ranks. Our …

Mia Farang On Youtube: (Re)Defining Thai Womanhood In The Network Society, Porranee Singpliam, Treepon Kirdnark Jan 2024

Mia Farang On Youtube: (Re)Defining Thai Womanhood In The Network Society, Porranee Singpliam, Treepon Kirdnark

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines the notion of mia farang amid the covid-19 pandemic. An analysis of mia farang YouTubers during this time reveals essential characteristics of the gendered and sexualized trope. Through Barker and Kuiper’s (2014) lens on the globalization process, we postulate that women’s voices during the peak of covid-19 became more political, namely with regard to their quality of life compared to that in Thailand. Further, we argue that our textual analysis on three mia farang YouTubers (Yai Nee, Yai Nang, and Yai Chompoo) shows how the space of flows is a possible site for political criticism and negotiation …

Thai Rap Songs Through The World Englishes Approach : Code-Switching And Nativization, Ekkarat Ruanglertsilp Jan 2024

Thai Rap Songs Through The World Englishes Approach : Code-Switching And Nativization, Ekkarat Ruanglertsilp

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study examines the English elements and nativized English features present in recent Thai rap songs. The source data comes from a Thai rap playlist called Thai Rapper on the online music platform Spotify. All English units found in the lyrics were manually counted and classified. The results diverged from most studies of Thai-English code-switching in Thai media in that, among the English elements considered, sentences were employed most frequently. Among nativized English features, semantic shift was most frequently employed. I argue that the local and global English identity flows (Pennycook 2009) index a shift in the Thai rap community …

From An Enclosure To Human-Scaled Encounters : Articulating The Notion Of Third Space In The Vishwakarma Community Temple, Penang, Sanjeh Raman

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The Arulmigu Kamatchi Amman Devasthanam, located on Jalan Dato Keramat, in Penang, Malaysia provides entry into the cultural world of Pathars, the traditional Tamil goldsmiths who have long established their business in Penang. The continuity of this temple is studied through its spatial attributes and social impact in anchoring collective community experience Primary data was acquired through ethnography and secondary data was drawn from a document and photo review. The analysis provides a narrative account of the temple’s mandapa as a social space that facilitates the hybridity of identities that grow from this temple. As a representation of Bhabha’s Third …

Singing Crimes, Rhyming News : Folksong Newsprints, Horror Sensibilities, And The Rise Of Sensationalist Mass Media In Siam, 1920s–1940s, Arthit Jiamrattanyoo Jan 2024

Singing Crimes, Rhyming News : Folksong Newsprints, Horror Sensibilities, And The Rise Of Sensationalist Mass Media In Siam, 1920s–1940s, Arthit Jiamrattanyoo

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The proliferation of print media in early-twentieth-century Siam coincided with the rising popularity of folk vocal music. By the 1920s, certain styles of folk balladry were appropriated by urban writers for news reportage and sociopolitical criticism with doses of sensationalization. Published in periodicals and chapbooks, this popular literature was characterized by its versification of true crimes and its typical focus on the figure of the criminal or the ghost. My article examines this hybrid genre of news entertainment at the nexus of a modern structure of the horror experience, folk music tradition, print capitalism, and journalistic culture in Siam. It …

Post-Colonial Relations Of Britain With India And Pakistan, 1947–71, Sabina Nargis Lepe Jan 2024

Post-Colonial Relations Of Britain With India And Pakistan, 1947–71, Sabina Nargis Lepe

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The decolonization process of Britain in India was completed with the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947. Because of the long colonial history in that area, it was natural that creating bilateral relations between Britain and the two former colonized parties (India and Pakistan) would be challenging and not free of issues. Furthermore, the two colonized parties were in a bitter relationship with each other. The major concern of this paper is to present the post-colonial bilateral relations of Britain with each country, India and Pakistan, between 1947 and 1971. It argues that multiple factors led Britain to maintain …

A Less Than Lay-Friendly Translation : A Textual Analysis Of Information Leaflets And Labels For Drug And Cosmeceuticals In Thailand, Narongdej Phanthaphoommee, Koraya Techawongstien Jan 2024

A Less Than Lay-Friendly Translation : A Textual Analysis Of Information Leaflets And Labels For Drug And Cosmeceuticals In Thailand, Narongdej Phanthaphoommee, Koraya Techawongstien

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Information on drug use should be easily comprehensible and provide clear instructions without relying on expert advice. Drawing upon the concept of lay-friendly translation (Askehave and Zethsen 2002, 2014; Jensen 2013), this study examines the translated information leaflets and labels of drug-related and cosmeceutical products in Thailand to understand characteristics of supposedly reachable language use. The findings reveal both lay-friendly and non-lay-friendly features in the English-to-Thai translations. Indicative of the former is the use of general terms, explanation, glossing, rewriting/summarising, syntactical shift, and stylistic shift. Instances of the latter include the direct transfer of field-specific terms and the use of …

Linguistic Uniscape : A Comparative Study Of Universities In Thailand, Zhaoyi Pan

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study examines the linguistic landscape (ll) of university campuses in Thailand and proposes the term “linguistic uniscape” (lu). It attempts to examine whether there is a significant difference in the code preference for signage between the public universities (puu s) and the private universities (pru s) in Thailand and examines the different social meanings of the signage at the puu s and at the pru s by using place semiotics (ps) theory. A total of 30 university campuses were investigated, including 15 puu s and 15 pru s. The results revealed a significant difference in the use of English …

The Process Of Unblocking Laos : Linking Indochina (1893–1945), Nguyen Thi Tuyet Nhung

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

With the establishment of the Indochinese Federation, the French colonial government implemented policies to develop the transport system in the colonies, connecting Laos with other regions in the Indochinese Federation. Previous studies have mainly focused on demonstrating the development of the transport network in Vietnam or highlighting the limitations of the French colonial government in investing in the development of transport in Laos. This article aims to redefine the role of the French in developing the transport network and infrastructure in Laos in order to break its isolation and associate this country with the rest of the Indochinese Federation. These …

Dissent And Posthuman Consciousness In Prabda Yoon’S Basement Moon, Isaraporn Pissa-Ard

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines Thai author Prabda Yoon’s Basement Moon, a 2018 science fictional novel that embodies the belief that art and science can play a vital role in triggering critical consciousness that keeps alive the spirit of dissent. A close reading of the novel also reveals that it mirrors several key concepts and ideas promoted by Gramsci pertaining to power relations between the ruling class and those under them and the educational roles of art and science. Of great significance is that this novel is exemplary of an innovative mode of political fiction in its employment of key posthumanist …

Passionate Women, Vengeful Spirits : Female Ghosts And The Japanese Gothic Mode, Samantha Landau Jan 2024

Passionate Women, Vengeful Spirits : Female Ghosts And The Japanese Gothic Mode, Samantha Landau

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Female phantasms of the living and the dead that appear in Japanese folklore and literature involve a dual image of women: the representation of a patriarchal ideal of women, and the monstrous double that revolts against that ideal. Representations of this folklore-inspired ideal/monstrous woman can be seen in a wide-ranging array of twentieth and twenty-first century Japanese fiction, from the early cannibalistic spirits in folklore-inspired tales to Romantic and Absurdist works to possession narratives. This essay builds upon extant research from folklorists and cultural anthropologists as well as critical literary theories on the appearance of ghosts in Japanese fiction. I …

“I Am A Shape Now Suddenly Long And Scaly” : Abject Physical Transformations And Dimensions Of Monstrosity In Beth Yahp’S The Crocodile Fury, Soumyarup Bhattacharjee

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article examines Beth Yahp’s novel The Crocodile Fury (1992) to explore how the novel’s fusion of conventions of the literary gothic and elements from indigenous folklore respond to the conditions of gendered and colonised oppression in the marginalised subject. By situating the many iterations of the titular “crocodile” as a quasi-mythic animal in Malay lore against the three major instances of physical transformations from the human to the grotesque non-human in the narrative, this article seeks to analyse how such transformations participate in a dialectic of oppression and liberation for such marginalised characters. At the same time, it explores …

The Global Catholic Missionary Societies And The Spread Of Marian Devotion In Pre-Twentieth-Century Vietnam, Duong Van Bien Jan 2024

The Global Catholic Missionary Societies And The Spread Of Marian Devotion In Pre-Twentieth-Century Vietnam, Duong Van Bien

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Dating back many years, Marian devotion is currently a ubiquitous phenomenon among Vietnamese Catholics in Vietnam. This article examines the endeavours of specific global Catholic missionary societies – the Society of Jesus (S.J.), the Dominican Order or the Order of Preachers (O.P.) and the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris (mep) – in spreading Marian devotion in pre-twentieth-century Vietnam. In doing so, the article seeks to demonstrate that the prevalence of Marian devotion primarily resulted from the enduring efforts of global Catholic missionaries during the stages of proselytization. This argument aims to challenge the prevailing notion that the primordial Vietnamese …

Investigating Gender-Based Stereotypes In Advertisement Landscape : A Multimodal Analysis Of An Indian Town, Debraj Gogoi, Sweta Sinha

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study examines the prevalence of gender stereotypes in outdoor advertising within an Indian satellite town, focusing on the portrayal of women and men in stereotypical gender roles. Images of outdoor advertisements were collected from the busy streets and subjected to purposive sampling for analysis. The analysis was done with critical discourse analysis and multimodal discourse analysis. The results reveal a clear endorsement of men in powerful and high-status positions, while women are consistently depicted as objects and confined to traditional roles as homemakers. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the importance of addressing gender issues, not only …

Japan For Example – National Character As The Driving Force Of National Progress In Thai Conservative Writings About Japan, David M. Malitz Jan 2023

Japan For Example – National Character As The Driving Force Of National Progress In Thai Conservative Writings About Japan, David M. Malitz

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Japan has been considered a role-model for the successful pursuit of ‘progress’ or national development in Siam/Thailand since the late 19th century. As this article shows, the Japanese exemplar played a significant role in Siamese/Thai political discourse, with three of the kingdom’s most important conservative thinkers – King Vajiravudh, Luang Wichit Wathakan, and Mom Ratchawong Kukrit Pramoj – writing in detail about Japanese history and interpreting Japanese battlefield and economic successes as the outcome of the national character of the Japanese. In contrast, the role of political institutions and institutional change in shaping human decisions and actions has been largely …

Liberating Thai History : The Thai Past In An Asian Century, Arjun Subrahmanyan Jan 2023

Liberating Thai History : The Thai Past In An Asian Century, Arjun Subrahmanyan

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The nationalist plot of modern Thai history stresses the kingdom’s exceptionalism as the only un-colonized state in Southeast Asia and highlights the steadiness of unbroken monarchy. Critics of the established narrative by contrast argue that Siam/Thailand bore many similarities to neighboring satellites of the Western powers that subordinated traditional authority and hence was a “semi-colony” of the West rather than a truly independent state. This paper argues that the semi-colonial view remains a better frame to study modern Thai history and that semi-coloniality produced a hybrid political culture among an educated new generation born around 1900. The young generation forged …

Prince Wan Waithayakon’S Attempt For Rapprochement With The People’S Republic Of China At The 1955 Asian-African Conference At Bandung, Wiraj Sripong

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

After the end of the Second World War, newly emerging nations were being divided up geopolitically into ideological camps – the so-called “Free World” led by the United States and the ‘Communist Bloc’ under the leadership of the Soviet Union. At the same time, there was rising demands for self-determination by national leaders who did not wish to commit exclusively to either ideological camp, as they perceived this to be a form of neo-imperialism. A leading group within this third way of thinking was the Colombo Group. In the midst of this intense three-way struggle, post-war Thailand under the leadership …

“Anarchy” Against “Order” : French Elite Perception Of The Conflict In Manchuria, Alexandre Barthel Jan 2023

“Anarchy” Against “Order” : French Elite Perception Of The Conflict In Manchuria, Alexandre Barthel

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The fall of the French empire in Asia is directly linked to the Second World War and France’s policy of appeasement that preceded it. The issue of France’s attitude to the invasion of Manchuria is important for understanding what French policy in East Asia was during the 1930s. For these reasons, this article intends to show the attitude of French political leaders and how, unable as they were to condemn the aggressor, Japan, it led to the policy of appeasement pursued by all French governments with regard to Japan during the rest of the decade. To do so, this article …

“Asia For Asians” : Revisiting Pan-Asianism Through The Propaganda Arts Of The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, Andre Magpantay

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The slogan “Asia for Asians” has been a central concept of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere and propagated by Japan as it imperialized parts of East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Oceania. Without bias to the resulting historical developments and realities, Pan-Asianism is revisited through the propaganda arts and materials proliferated by the Empire of Japan towards its agenda of a unified Asia. Aided by knowledge of art history and criticism, six specifically chosen propaganda arts are analyzed using theories of image analysis drawing from the works of Guillermo (2001), Bartmański, Alexander, and Giesen (2012), and Ross (2002). …

From Proto-Southwestern Tai To Modern Lanna Tai : Implications From The 16th-Century Phonology, Shinnakrit Tangsiriwattanakul

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study established the relative chronology of sound changes in the Lanna Tai language from Proto-Southwestern Tai to Modern Lanna Tai dialects. The 16th-Century Lanna Tai phonology, as documented in the Sino-Lanna Tai Manual of Translation, was compared to Proto-Southwestern Tai and Modern Lanna Tai dialects to differentiate pre-16th century and post-16th century changes. Based on this chronology, Lanna Tai can be divided into three stages: Old Lanna Tai featuring the loss of uvulars and changes in consonants; Early Modern Lanna Tai exhibiting tone split, loss of voicing contrast and vowel acquisitions; and Modern Lanna Tai dialects showing changes …

A Corpus-Based Study Of The Reflexive Form Tua-Eng ‘Self’ In Thai, Theeraporn Ratitamkul Jan 2023

A Corpus-Based Study Of The Reflexive Form Tua-Eng ‘Self’ In Thai, Theeraporn Ratitamkul

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper aims to investigate semantic and syntactic characteristics of the reflexive form tua-eng ‘self’ in Thai and analyze reflexive constructions within the framework of Cognitive Grammar, adopting van Hoek (1995, 1997)’s approach. To observe how the reflexive appears in actual usage, 500 instances of tua-eng were collected from the Thai National Corpus (tnc). The reflexive is examined in relation to its antecedent regarding animacy, structural proximity and grammatical positions. Moreover, frequently encountered reflexive constructions are identified. The study claims that the prototypical reflexive construction in Thai is one in which the antecedent serves as a subject and tua-eng as …

Independence Or Interdependence? : The Thai Self-Construal As Reflected By Linguistic Evidence, Natthaporn Panpothong, Siriporn Phakdeephasook Jan 2023

Independence Or Interdependence? : The Thai Self-Construal As Reflected By Linguistic Evidence, Natthaporn Panpothong, Siriporn Phakdeephasook

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Self-construal can influence the ways people in distinct cultures think, perceive and interact with others. To date, scholars still present different arguments on the prominent self-construal of Thais. The present study aims at examining Thai linguistic data including proverbs, sayings, cultural key terms and interactional data in response to the question of whether Thai culture places emphasis on independent or interdependent perspectives of the self. The findings reveal that Thai sayings, proverbs and cultural key terms reflect both independent and interdependent self-construals. Yet, those that stress interdependency outnumber independency. As for interactional practices in daily exchanges, the usage of pronominal …
