Regrouping In The Clearing: Resisting Liturgiam Authenticam And Reconsidering An African American Rite, Kenneth L. Crowe Hamilton

In light of the move to the right manifested in the recent changes to the Roman Rite, this essay seeks to add an Africentric and postcolonial critique to other recent liturgical and linguistic critiques of the new rite by liturgy scholars and pastors. I argue that the new translation is an attack on not only Vatican II principles but also on black Catholic theological principles, the black Catholic community, and oppressed populations in general. Many Catholics experience catechetical challenges as they try to keep their faith growing in the midst of “new” truths, spiritual indifference and dwindling Mass attendance. This is especially true for Black Catholics who strive to balance racism in the world and racism in the Church. This article offers a pastoral response that uses story— telling and listening—for catechesis. Using My Story-Your Story as a method of storytelling, the article expounds on how story is the foundation of communication and how it can open catechetical endeavors for the 21st century. Strengthening Black‐Brown Solidarity: Latino/A Race, Unauthorized Blacks, And The Roots Of Anti‐Brown Violence, Jeremy V. Cruz
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
This essay analyzes intersecting experiences of racism and U.S. state violence, black-brown tensions, and future possibilities for anti-racist solidarity. Its race analysis and moral evaluation proceed from a Chicano perspective and through the theoretical lens of transnationalism, thinking about anti-black racism as a global imperial project. The author argues that sustained analysis of Latino/a racialization (and racism), of the precariousness of black citizenship, and of the genesis of anti-brown racist practices within and alongside antiblackness can all function to strengthen black-brown solidarity.
