A Biblical And Theological Analysis Of Tithing: Toward A Theology Of Giving In The New Covenant Era, David A. Croteau Dec 2005

A Biblical And Theological Analysis Of Tithing: Toward A Theology Of Giving In The New Covenant Era, David A. Croteau

Faculty Dissertations

Chapter 1 summarized some of the methodological and hermeneutical issues and discussed the problem and history of tithing in Christianity. Various arguments through the centuries have been proposed that provided reasons for the abrogation and the continuation of tithing. The "Christian view" on this issue has not been monolithic. Chapter 2 discussed tithing in the Old Testament and concluded that (1) the pre-Mosaic period contained no tithing system and no command to tithe, (2) in the Mosaic law the Israelites gave well-beyond ten percent and only products connected to the land were liable to tithing, and (3) the Historical and …

Valuing Earth Intrinsically And Instrumentally: A Theological Framework For Environmental Ethics, Jame Schaefer Dec 2005

Valuing Earth Intrinsically And Instrumentally: A Theological Framework For Environmental Ethics, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Philosophers have struggled with value theory as one of the most recalcitrant problems for environmental ethics. Theologians can benefit from their efforts when retrieving and reworking notions about the goodness of creation in patristic and medieval texts, particularly those by Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Thomas Aquinas. This process yields a religiously motivated rationale for intrinsic-instrumental valuing of the physical world's constituents for themselves, their relationships to one another, and their common good that can be relevant, meaningful, and helpful for responding to ecological degradation.

Ritual Legitimacy And Scriptural Authority, James W. Watts Oct 2005

Ritual Legitimacy And Scriptural Authority, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

In this essay, James W. Watts explains the interdependence of texts and rituals with regard to ancient religions. Specifically, he outlines patterns of practice and developments in the ritual use of texts and the texual authorization of rituals in antiquity.

Watts also makes the case that beyond the interplay of texual authority and ritual legitimacy that most ancient cultures engaged in, Judaism was unique in elevating the Torah along with its other laws and stories to special "scriptural" status.

The Force Of Analogy, Robert Masson Jun 2005

The Force Of Analogy, Robert Masson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The article outlines twenty theses for rethinking the doctrine of analogy in a postmodern context. The pivotal claim is that the paradigmatic and decisive force of analogy is to extend and create new meanings by "forcing" an affirmation of identity that fundamentally alters our fields of meanings. Thus analogy in the case of terms properly predicated of God has to do more with the conceptual moves that create changes in our fields of meanings than with recognizing a "similarity in difference" or a proportion of some sort. The argument draws on Mary Gerhart and Allan Russell's theory of metaphoric process, …

Hope In The Face Of Empire: Failed Patriotism, Civil International Publicity, And Patriotic Peacebuilding, Gary M. Simpson

The patriotism of empire is a failed patriotism that longs for empire as the way to achieve security. America needs instead a repenting patriotism, in the tradition of Lincoln, that recognizes public accountability and moves toward peacebuilding.

A Comparison Of The Aesthetic Approach Of Hans-Georg Gadamer And Hans-Urs Von Balthasar, Jason Paul Bourgeois Apr 2005

A Comparison Of The Aesthetic Approach Of Hans-Georg Gadamer And Hans-Urs Von Balthasar, Jason Paul Bourgeois

Marian Library Faculty Publications

Hans-Georg Gadamer (1901-2002), the German philosopher of hermeneutics, has exercised a powerful influence on post-Vatican II Roman Catholic fundamental theology, especially regarding questions of the development of doctrine and the appropriation of tradition. There is a tension in interpreting Gadamer's thought between his concept of "fusion of horizons," in which the horizon of the past is fused with the horizon of the present to yield new interpretations of past texts, and his defense of "prejudice, authority, classics, and tradition," in which Gadamer upholds the enduring truth-value of received wisdom from the past. … This article will broadly point out the …

As Filhas De Oyá: Warriors In The Eye Of The Storm, Sheela Bringi Apr 2005

As Filhas De Oyá: Warriors In The Eye Of The Storm, Sheela Bringi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study follows the trail of Oyá, a black feminine Orixá, or goddess, within the Afro-Brazilian spiritual tradition of Candomblé, through her elemental forces as the winds, storms, tornadoes, the river Niger, and buffalo. I unearth the influence of Oyá on the lives of three black female followers as she is manifested in the world as a black woman, a mother, a warrior and a lover.

I interviewed three black followers of Oyá and found that she is primarily a motherly force which provides protection, guidance and security for her followers. As a warrior, her energy inspires perseverance, determination, and …

A Wesleyan Understanding Of Proper Self-Love In The Sanctified Life, Kevin Twain Lowery Jan 2005

A Wesleyan Understanding Of Proper Self-Love In The Sanctified Life, Kevin Twain Lowery

Faculty Scholarship – Theology

In Wesleyan theology, Christian perfection (i.e. the life of holiness) entails the fulfillment of the Love Commandments. Holiness is neither pride nor self-loathing, for it requires proper self-esteem. It is the fulfillment of the Love Commandments. Wesley referred to Christian perfection as “love expelling sin,” and we should return to the basic premise that holiness is, first and foremost, loving God supremely and loving others as we love ourselves.

Moral Purity And Moral Progress: The Tension Between Assurance And Perfection In Kant And Wesley, Kevin Twain Lowery Jan 2005

Moral Purity And Moral Progress: The Tension Between Assurance And Perfection In Kant And Wesley, Kevin Twain Lowery

Faculty Scholarship – Theology

The quest for perfection can undermine one's sense of assurance, since it requires some dissatisfaction with one's present state. For Kant, assurance is based on our continual moral progress, but divine assistance is required to overcome our radically evil nature. Still, we must merit this assistance, and this seemingly precludes the type of moral purity Kant asserts. Wesley offers a more robust resolution by upholding justification by faith and by recognizing love as the chief moral motive. Once we have assurance that our sins are forgiven, we respond by loving God in return, and this motivates us to pursue perfection.

A Plot Movements Worksheet helps keep the narrative flowing from situation, through stress and searching to solution and a new situation.

The Morality Of Human Rights: A Nonreligious Ground?, Michael J. Perry Jan 2005

The Morality Of Human Rights: A Nonreligious Ground?, Michael J. Perry

Faculty Articles

In the midst of the countless, grotesque inhumanities of the twentieth century, however, there is a heartening story, amply recounted elsewhere: the emergence, in international law, of the morality of human rights. The morality of human rights is not new; in one or another version, the morality is very old. But the emergence of morality in international law, in the period since the end of World War II, is a profoundly important development.

The twentieth century, therefore, was not only the dark and bloody time; the second half of the twentieth century was also the time in which a growing …
