Against The Stream, How Karl Barth Reframed Church-State Relations (Chapter 3 Of Keine Gewalt! No Violence!), Roger J. Newell

Excerpt: "Defenders of the Barmen Declaration's apolitical tone remind us that it was never intended to establish a program of political protest, that Karl Barth and the others were pastors not politicians; that the goal was to reassert the integrity of the gospel in the face of the attempted subversion by the German Christians. On the one hand, the soundness of this interpretation is self-evident. And yet it should surprise no one that an apolitical strategy would have little political impact on the German state. It is also true that Barth's views on church and state relations changed after Barmen; …

The focus of the present essay is thus to pose a series of theses regarding the interfluential character of the JohnSynoptic relationships and to assess the degree to which each of those particular relationships is confirmed or disconfirmed by the material in the Johannine Passion Narrative. Implications will then follow at the conclusion of the essay.

Psychological Implications Of The Doctrine Of Christian Perfection With Special Reference To John Wesley's View, Irv Brendlinger, Eric E. Mueller
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The doctrine of Christian Perfection is viewed by some as a wonderful and liberating doctrine, but by others it is seen as producing false expectations and guilt. John Wesley, the first major theologian to develop a theology of Christian Perfection, encountered misunderstandings and problems with this doctrine. He wrote and preached to correct the misunderstandings. Unfortunately, misunderstandings persist and sometimes have psychological effects on individuals. This article explores common understandings, beliefs, and experiences regarding Christian Perfection among evangelical Christians from the holiness tradition. The material was gathered by means of interviews that were recorded. The interviews were then studied by …

The Sitz Im Leben Of The Johannine Bread Of Life Discourse And Its Evolving Context, Paul N. Anderson
The Sitz Im Leben Of The Johannine Bread Of Life Discourse And Its Evolving Context, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The thesis of this study is that because the Johannine Bread of Life Discourse reflects an exhortative homiletical unit, connecting the ministry of Jesus with ongoing crises affecting the Johannine community of faith, an investigation into the rhetorical thrust of its message will illumine—and be illumined by—one’s understanding of the Johannine situation and its evolving context. More specifically, as the central exhortative thrust of the discourse is “Work not for food that is death-producing, but for the food that is life-producing—eternally, which the Son of Man shall give you” (v. 27), the misunderstanding dialogues between Jesus and four groups of …

Participation And Atonement, Roger Newell
Participation And Atonement, Roger Newell

How does the victory of Christ over sin and death impinge on my life nearly two thousand years later, so that, as Professor Torrance bas described it, his death becomes my death and his resurrection my resurrection? I will respond to this question by briefly discussing two 'subject-centred appropriation' models and concluding with an 'object-centred participation' model. The meaning of these phrases will be unpacked as the discussion progresses. However, at the outset it is important to note that the object-centred model is based on a more radical understanding of the incarnation which has been advocated by Professor Torrance and …
Receiving Holy Callings, And Being Wholly Responsive, Paul N. Anderson
Receiving Holy Callings, And Being Wholly Responsive, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
"What does it mean to receive a holy calling?" That's a good question! Whereas "holy" is an adjective, describing the just and loving character of God, a "calling" is the activity by which we are encountered by God in a way which transforms ourselves and our reasons for being. The image associated with a calling is an invitation to come and join another person in a task and into a personal relationship. Notice how a calling is the opposite of a command or an order. An order sends someone away with a task to be completed (Keleuo). A calling, however …
