The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten
The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It is the contention of this writer that, although these various theological interpretations may offer a partial explanation to the enigma of Luke's "central section," they do not adequately account for the diversity or arrangement of material. It is the writer's thesis that Luke may have selected a part of his materials for the "central section" from a collection of pericopae used to train missionaries in the early Church. That such a written or oral tradition existed before St. Luke wrote his Gospel may be inferred from St. Paul's sermon at Antioch in Pisidia, "But God raised him from the …
Wars Of The Israelite Amphictyony, Theodore Ludwig
Wars Of The Israelite Amphictyony, Theodore Ludwig
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The research which resulted in this thesis was done for the purpose of determining the place which united military undertakings had in the Israelite tribal league prior to the establishment of the monarchy. The Old Testament describes a number of wars which took place during the era known as "the period of the judges." Although the victories won in these battles were usually ascribed to "Israel" in general, there are indications in some cases that the actual participants in the battles were limited to a small number of the Israelite tribes. This study seeks to discover the tribal participation in …
An Annotated Translation Of Georg F Vicedom's Missio Dei, Dennis Hilgendorf
An Annotated Translation Of Georg F Vicedom's Missio Dei, Dennis Hilgendorf
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The present thesis is offered as a contribution towards the study of a theology of missions. The Translator's Appendix and the majority of the footnotes are the work of the writer; the rest of the thesis is a translation of Georg F. Vicedom's Missio Dei, published by the Chr. Kaiser Verlag of Munich, Germany. Although the work reveals continental flavor and concerns, it is my conviction that by its range and depth it will appeal to a far wider constituency in the West as well as those areas where religion is making a fresh impact.
The Theory Of Adult Christian Education In The Local Lutheran Parish, John Golisch
The Theory Of Adult Christian Education In The Local Lutheran Parish, John Golisch
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study is an attempt to define, formulate and describe the aim and essence of Christian education. It will do this within the framework and understanding of conservative Lutheran theology whose sole norm and source is the verbally-inspired and all-sufficient Scriptures of God. It will attempt to apply this to Lutheran adults at the parish level and in terms of what God wants to be occurring in the local Lutheran parish for the continued Christian growth and education of its adults. This study is not intended as an exhaustive nor a definitive treatise on the subject. It does, however, seek …
Self-Examination- An Investigation Of I Corinthians 11:28, Norman Threinen
Self-Examination- An Investigation Of I Corinthians 11:28, Norman Threinen
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study is an attempt to investigate self-examination on the basis of Paul's statement in I Cor. 11:2e. Since the context of the passage is very important, Chapter II studies the immediate context of I Corinthians 11 and the wider context of the entire epistle. Paul's interest throughout the epistle is the concern that the Corinthians recognize Christ as the κúριος in their lives.
The Theological Background Of The Marcan Account Of The Baptism And Temptation Of Jesus, George Nickelsburg
The Theological Background Of The Marcan Account Of The Baptism And Temptation Of Jesus, George Nickelsburg
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the Old Testament and intertestamental background of the words and concepts appearing in Mark 1:1-13. Our study will show that almost every word and phrase in these verses is charged with a complex of theological associations stemming from the Old Testament and the Apocrypha and Pseudopigraha. We will attempt to show what these associations are, the different nuances given to them by the writers of the Old Testament and the intertestamental literature, and the varying ways which they were combined in these writings.

The Image Of God In The Theology Of Paul, Richard Taron
The Image Of God In The Theology Of Paul, Richard Taron
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This paper does not purport to resolve the question of the centuries with an air of final authority. Rather it is an attempt to delve once again into the New. Testament, in particular the letters of Paul, to find there what proceed with the search it will be necessary to investigate what different authors have said concerning various key passages, and to weigh, their statements on the scales of other Pauline, New Testament, and Old Testament evidence. Throughout we propose to adhere to the principle that Scripture interprets itself, so that one passage in Paul must be seen in the …
The Relation Of Friedrich Brunn To The German Free Churches And The Missoui Synod, 1846-1876, Richard Drews
The Relation Of Friedrich Brunn To The German Free Churches And The Missoui Synod, 1846-1876, Richard Drews
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis will chiefly attempt to demonstrate the activity of Friedrich Ausust Brunn, Jr., particularly between 1846 and 1876. Brunn was the major representative of the Free Church in the State of Nassau. He was also an important progenitor of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Saxony and Other States. Furthermore, Brunn supplied over 200 teacher and ministerial candidates for the Missouri Synod between 1861 and 1878.
The Foolishness Of Christ Crucified Viewed From The Point Of Incipient Gnosticism At Corinth, William Goerss
The Foolishness Of Christ Crucified Viewed From The Point Of Incipient Gnosticism At Corinth, William Goerss
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The thesis of this paper is that at Corinth Paul did take over some of the thought patterns and vocabulary of an incipient Gnosticism with Judaic overtones. But instead of being influenced theologically by the borrowed terms, he used them for his consistent preaching of the crucified Savior, the true Wisdom of God. He was well aware of the uniqueness of the religion he preached; its real source lay not in the current thought forms of either Judaism or Hellenism, but in the Person, 'Preaching and redemptive work of the crucified Son of God.

A Comparison Of The Ethics Of The Qumran Scrolls And The Epistle Of James, Warren Schmidt
A Comparison Of The Ethics Of The Qumran Scrolls And The Epistle Of James, Warren Schmidt
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
There are several reasons why one would expect to find similarities to the Scrolls in James. The latter is clearly a Palestinian document written for Jewish readers. It is probably the earliest of the New Testament books written during the formative years of the church. This is a time when the church would be more open to outside influences in matters such as organization and polity. The early dating of James has been accepted by many scholars since the study of Gerhard Kittel, who dates it in the fourth decade of the first century, immediately before Paul's first missionary journey.

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
