The “Boatloads” Bible Study: A Report On The Spiritual Growth Resulting From Participation In A Small Group Bible Study, Abigail Brewer
The “Boatloads” Bible Study: A Report On The Spiritual Growth Resulting From Participation In A Small Group Bible Study, Abigail Brewer
The Kabod
Developed in January 2018, the “Boatloads” Bible study series sought to encourage members of a college life group in Lynchburg, Virginia, to grow spiritually by studying the power of God in ten passages of Scripture involving boats. At the end of the semester, members of the life group were asked to complete an anonymous survey about their experience in the Bible study. To analyze how the “Boatloads” Bible study affected spiritual growth in the lives of its attendees, Abigail Brewer, one of the leaders of the life group, created a two-part survey with ten statements and five questions. Using a …
Nature Of Sin, Dylan Halter
Nature Of Sin, Dylan Halter
The Kabod
Sin is inescapable. Since the Fall, mankind has been doomed. God continuously provided His people an opportunity for repentance, but the cataclysmic effects of sin continued. Understanding the nature of sin is one of the most important doctrines for apologetics, evangelism, discipleship, and pastoral teachings. Upon firmly applying hermeneutics, historical tradition, theological exegesis, and practical applications, followers of the Way are more equipped to do the Will of the Lord. The serpent succeeded in the garden, but the Savior defeated death on the Cross, bringing about redemption and restoration for all of humanity.
The Special Need Of The Local Church, Sarah Deacon
The Special Need Of The Local Church, Sarah Deacon
The Kabod
All around this world are individuals with special needs who are seeking to find a place where they truly belong: “According to a 2010 U.S. Census study, 56.7 million Americans, or about one in five U.S. residents have a disability” (Lee 40). With such a statistic, an individual with special needs is bound to be found in almost every church across the U.S. In her book Leading a Special Needs Ministry, Amy Fenton Lee states, “Congregations with a regular attendance from eighty to eight thousand are both impacted, as children with neurological and physical disabilities seek inclusion” (36). Many churches …
Practical Prophecy, Dylan Halter
Practical Prophecy, Dylan Halter
The Kabod
Prophets of the Old Testament provided the nation of Israel a direct line of communication with the Lord. Their job was to edify the nation, keeping their praise towards the Creator. However, Israel began to pull away from the Lord during the reign of the kings and the ensuing civil war. Their disobedience would continue through the post-exilic moments following the Babylonian invasion through idolatry, social injustice, and religious ritualism. Today, the Old Testament prophets speak to the same situations. This lethal triad transcends time and provides believers, both Jew and Gentile, an opportunity for repentance, redirection, and rededication to …
Examination Of Molinism, Olivia Grey Steele
Examination Of Molinism, Olivia Grey Steele
The Kabod
What is the driving force behind salvation? Is it God’s sovereign will, enacting His efficacious grace upon the heart of man? Or is it the free will of man himself, choosing to accept the grace that has been extended to him? This is the age-old question behind the argument of sovereignty versus free will. Luis de Molina, a sixteenth century Jesuit theologian, believed that God, through His omniscience and omnipotence, can predestine an individual for salvation while keeping the free will of that individual intact. This system, known as Molinism, stands on three main principles: a wholly libertarian account of …
The Hebraic Monarchy As God’S Redemptive Response To Israel’S Unfaithfulness, Caleb H A Brown
The Hebraic Monarchy As God’S Redemptive Response To Israel’S Unfaithfulness, Caleb H A Brown
The Kabod
The first portion of this paper will argue that the Old Testament portrays the monarchy neither as God’s chosen method of relating to his people, nor as an intrinsically evil institution, but as God’s redemptive response to Israel’s unfaithfulness. The second portion addresses a potential objection to this portrayal by arguing that Moses serves primarily as a type for Samuel, not the monarchy.
Ad Fontes: Desiderius Erasmus’ Call For A Return To The Sources Of A Unified And Simple Christian Faith, Amanda Kieffer
Ad Fontes: Desiderius Erasmus’ Call For A Return To The Sources Of A Unified And Simple Christian Faith, Amanda Kieffer
The Kabod
Desiderius Erasmus’ humanism greatly shaped his view of Christianity. He developed a “philosophy of Christ” that led him to seek peaceful reforms from within the Church while attempting to maintain unity. He was a consummate scholar and inspiring figure of his time. Unfortunately, his interactions with Luther did not bring out the best in him, or in Luther for that matter, but there is still much to be learned by modern Christians from Erasmus’ views on reform that can be applied to the modern Church.
John Calvin, Authority, And The Evangelical Conviction Of The Evidentness Of Truth, Joshua Miller
John Calvin, Authority, And The Evangelical Conviction Of The Evidentness Of Truth, Joshua Miller
The Kabod
John Calvin stands apart as a singularly powerful figure in the history of Western Civilization. His thought undergirds the fundamental principles of liberal democracy that dominate the most advanced nations on earth in the modern age, and his theology continues to influence the doctrine and leadership of the Reformed church’s many inheritors. This paper emphasizes and identifies the importance of understanding of Calvin’s views on secular and ecclesiastical authority and evaluates them.
Religion In Sense And Sensibility, Erin R. Toal
Religion In Sense And Sensibility, Erin R. Toal
The Kabod
Jane Austen’s first major novel that was published, Sense and Sensibility, exemplifies the shifting perspectives in religion during the Georgian period by exploring the virtues of its title through the lenses of the Anglicanism of Georgian England. This paper argues that Sense and Sensibility reflects Jane Austen’s worldview and identifies how it stems from the Neoclassical and Romantic fusion present in her religious belief.
The Doctrine Of Justification, Valerie Pors
The Doctrine Of Justification, Valerie Pors
The Kabod
This paper seeks to define and describe the doctrine of justification, and to track the historical origin of the doctrine’s present evangelical understanding. The present-day evangelical understanding of the doctrine of justification is quite complex—integrating many scriptural topics such as righteousness, imputation, faith, grace, forgiveness, works and the Law—an understanding which originated with and developed since Luther’s departure from the traditional Roman Catholic view of justification. The paper analyzes Wayne Grudem’s theory of justification as he developed it in his Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine.

Divine Foreknowledge And The Problem Of Evil: Four Views, Nathan S. Justice
Divine Foreknowledge And The Problem Of Evil: Four Views, Nathan S. Justice
The Kabod
This paper examines the issues of divine foreknowledge and the Problem of Evil from the standpoint of four different theological systems: Open Theism, Arminianism, Molinism, and Calvinism. The author summarizes each view’s understanding of divine foreknowledge and then explains how this understanding applies to the view’s refutation of the Problem of Evil.
Covenant, Kingship, Grace, Sacrifice, And Prophetism In The Old Testament, Rickie S. Scott
Covenant, Kingship, Grace, Sacrifice, And Prophetism In The Old Testament, Rickie S. Scott
The Kabod
This essay examines the major themes of covenant, kingship, grace, sacrifice, and prophetism that reoccur throughout the Old Testament and contribute to a proper understanding of the ancient biblical text. Through covenant, God reveals his divine nature and relates to his people. Through kingship, God reveals his plan for Israel. Through grace, God loves his chosen people and shows them mercy, and through sacrifice, God cleanses and sanctifies the Israelites. Finally, through prophetism, God discloses his divine calling for the Israelites. Each of these themes exposes God’s self-revelation and contributes to an enhanced understanding of the Old Testament.

Gustavo GutiéRrez – Liberation Theology & Marxism, Todd Cameron Swathwood Jr
Gustavo GutiéRrez – Liberation Theology & Marxism, Todd Cameron Swathwood Jr
The Kabod
Since 1968, liberation theology has emerged as a prominent feature of religion and politics, particularly in South America. Originally stemming from the writings of Peruvian priest Gustavo Gutiérrez, this at-once theological and overtly political ideology decries the institutionalized violence of the world’s capitalist society on the poor and oppressed, and argues that God is particularly concerned with the plight of the suffering masses. Christians should therefore make assistance of these poor souls their highest priority, and advocate for any and all methods of alleviating suffering, especially those that work from the premise that society must be toppled and rebuilt for …
