As already indicated, in dealing with the question of the relationship between Jesus and John it is easily possible to overlook what is at least an equally important area, the content of the Baptist's message. In addition, an emphasis upon the environmental factors tends to lead to a generalization regarding the similarity of one movement to another without making sufficient allowance for original elements or for elements whose origin may not be in the contemporary scene but rather in a previous era.
