The Homing Of The Word: Textual Intimacy In The Gospel Of John, Mary A. Craig Osf Jan 2022

The Homing Of The Word: Textual Intimacy In The Gospel Of John, Mary A. Craig Osf

Th.D. Dissertations

Christian spirituality is rooted in the Gospels. In proclaiming the truth of Resurrection and the presence of the Risen Jesus, each Gospel stories Jesus into human imagining. The Gospel of John is experienced as radically different from the Synoptic texts. Something in it affects everything of it. It seemingly knows Jesus differently, engages a reader differently, Gospels differently, even and actually loves differently.

This study considers what the Gospel of John does to a reader. Though not an exegetical study in the strict sense, it depends on a most simple, most beautiful, and most intimate line in all of Scripture: …

The Acts Of John Within The Johannine Corpus, James W. Barker Jan 2021

The Acts Of John Within The Johannine Corpus, James W. Barker

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

This essay reassesses the place of the Acts of John among other Johannine literature. Although the Gospel, three epistles, and Apocalypse were eventually deemed canonical, contemporary scholarship typically treats Revelation separately. Based on patristic testimony and manuscript materiality, I contend that not only the Apocalypse but also the Acts of John should be (re)incorporated alongside the Gospel and Epistles. Charles E. Hill has argued persuasively that the proto-orthodox were unafraid of the Fourth Gospel, despite its popularity among heterodox and heretical groups. I extend the same argument to the Acts of John.

Taking Away The Sin Of The World: Egō Eimi And The Day Of Atonement In John, Jackson Abhau Aug 2020

Taking Away The Sin Of The World: Egō Eimi And The Day Of Atonement In John, Jackson Abhau

Studia Antiqua

The presence of Jewish themes and allusions in the Gospel of John has received much scholarly attention in recent decades. This study follows this trend, exploring several possible connections between the Day of Atonement and the Johannine narrative. In this paper, I argue that these connections—which include John the Baptist’s identification of Jesus with the Lamb of God, echoes of the scapegoat ritual, high-priest-like prayers, and the repeated use of the phrase egō eimi—were deliberately incorporated into the narrative by the author of John as pointed allusions to the Day of Atonement. For the original audience, as well as …

The Sacramentality Of The "Bread Of Life Discourse" In John 6, Anthony Nabor Apr 2019

The Sacramentality Of The "Bread Of Life Discourse" In John 6, Anthony Nabor

Global Tides

The “Bread of Life Discourse” in John 6 is often read sacramentally and used as justification for eucharistic beliefs regarding true-presence. Though the evangelist of the Gospel deals with chronology differently than modern authors and readers, the sacramental-sounding language in the “Bread of Life Discourse” does not necessarily mean that the passage is referring to the establishment of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The main point of the “Bread of Life Discourse” is to emphasize faith in Jesus through the metaphor of bread, continuing the dominant theme in the entire chapter of John 6.

Echo Chamber: The Network Architecture Of John 11–13, Keith L. Yoder Mar 2019

Echo Chamber: The Network Architecture Of John 11–13, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

This study examines the integrated network of parallels and reversals embedded in the context of John 10:40–13:33. Pierre Mourlon-Beernaert first noticed in 1981 the parallel and orderly movements of John 11 and 12. Analysis here will show that many of the parallel features in John 11–12 extend also into the Last Supper of John 13, especially those that link through the Anointing of 12:1-11. The Raising of Lazarus, the Anointing and Triumphal Entry, and the Last Supper texts comprise a three-fold core around which artist John has designed a grand literary triptych. Numerous features (nodes) interconnect with one another across …

Divining Gospel: Classifying Manuscripts Of John Used In Sortilege, Jeff Childers Sep 2018

Divining Gospel: Classifying Manuscripts Of John Used In Sortilege, Jeff Childers

Graduate School of Theology

The texts of Christian scripture find their way into a variety of ancient artifacts. The manuscript form has been the most widespread, yet manuscripts manifest distinct patterns of organization and structure according to their different purposes. Many include companion texts sharing the page with that of scripture—texts that gloss, provide commentary, give liturgical direction, or otherwise assist the reader in understanding or using scripture. In many instances, pages containing scripture have acquired additional texts over the years–e.g. marginal notes, corrections, claims of ownership, prayers, and fragments of other texts. One of the least well-studied phenomena is the sort of artifact …

Eleazar/Eliezer Summary Chart (From Tal Ilan, Lexicon Of Jewish Names In Late Antiquity), Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

This chart summarizes the Hebrew, Greek, and Latin variants of names Eleazar/Eliezer as they appear in Tal Ilan's Lexicon of Jewish Names in Late Antiquity: The western diaspora 330 BCE - 650 CE (Mohr-Siebeck, Tübingen, 2002) 65-79. The data here are in support of the paper Abraham and Eliezer: The Name and Role of Poor Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31, which I will present at the Eastern Great Lakes Biblical Society (SBL) Annual Meeting on March 15-16, 2018 in Akron, Ohio.

Love In The Ordinary: Leadership In The Gospel Of John, Alex Sosler Sep 2017

Love In The Ordinary: Leadership In The Gospel Of John, Alex Sosler

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"Jesus did extraordinary things. the gospel of John includes seven miraculous signs that point to Jesus’ true identity as the Son of god. god incarnate is no ordinary concept. however, the first 30 or so years of his life seem rather ordinary. Just look at some of the regular patterns of his ministry as recorded in the gospels: attending weddings, hiding from crowds, going to the synagogue. At the end of his time on earth, as Jesus asks the question, “Do you love me?” he calls his followers to be ordinary in the ordinary. it is these regular moments that …

"Witness" And "Bearing Witness" In The Legal Settings Of The Pentateuch And The Gospel Of John: An Intertextual Study, Franklin A. Marti Jan 2017

"Witness" And "Bearing Witness" In The Legal Settings Of The Pentateuch And The Gospel Of John: An Intertextual Study, Franklin A. Marti

Dissertations

This dissertation studies the words “witness” and “to bear witness” in the Pentateuch and in the Gospel of John, and at the same time presents an intertextual connection between these books.

The study begins with an introduction in which I present the background and statement of the problem, the purpose of the study, the delimitations and the methodology.

Following the introduction chapter 1 deals with the review of the literature from ANE documents to ancient Jewish interpretation. I conclude that even though the Code of Hammurabi and the Hittite treaties are documents with different purposes, they reflect a similar feature: …

Chart Of Linkages Between John's Raising Of Lazarus, Anointing, And Last Supper - Updated December 7, 2018, Keith L. Yoder May 2016

Chart Of Linkages Between John's Raising Of Lazarus, Anointing, And Last Supper - Updated December 7, 2018, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

The attached chart compares the consecutive features of John's Anointing and Triumphal Entry (John 12:1-43) with parallel links in his preceding Raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-53) and his following Last Supper (John 13:1-33). Analysis reveals that 17 of the 20 elements of the Anointing text (John 12:1-8) are linked with parallels in the Lazarus and/or Last Supper texts, suggesting that John 12 acts as narrative bridge which closely interlocks John 11 with John 13. The following Triumphal Entry and its context (John 12:9-30) proves to be closely linked back to the Raising of Lazarus.

This emerging literary triptych demonstrates again …

Remember The Word That I Told You: Direct Internal Quotation In The Gospel Of John, Jeffrey Michael Tripp Jan 2016

Remember The Word That I Told You: Direct Internal Quotation In The Gospel Of John, Jeffrey Michael Tripp

Dissertations

The Gospel of John contains over 50 instances of direct internal quotation: the direct quotation, at a later point in the story, of a speech act already given in the narrative. John has dozens more cases than any other New Testament book, making it a demonstrably Johannine device. Furthermore, verifiable quotations are rarely exact independently of who is quoting. The present study examines three aspects of John’s use of direct internal quotation in the context of Greco-Roman, Jewish, and other New Testament literature. First, the modifications made to the original speech act are placed in the context of paraphrase, a …

Know Yourself And You Will Be Known: The Gospel Of Thomas And Middle Platonism, Seth A. Clark Jan 2014

Know Yourself And You Will Be Known: The Gospel Of Thomas And Middle Platonism, Seth A. Clark

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus and is primarily composed of rhetorical statements that were used to preserve the teachings of itinerant Greek philosophers. These collections were used to persuade individuals to join the philosophical schools represented, much like the early followers of the Jesus movement would use his teachings to convince others to join them as well. However, the theological background for the text is still debated because it contains esoteric and enigmatic references not fully understood by most scholars. This work argues that the theological and philosophical background for the Gospel …
