This action research textbook has been developed as a cultural affirmation method to address the transfer problems faced by Chicano students in community college. The textbook will reach out to students in classrooms and engage them in building social networks that create, support, and reinforce their positive experiences in community college. The primary objective of this project is to provide cultural and practical tools to community college students enrolled in Chicano/a Studies courses so that they can use to replace their fear of failure and potential for self isolation with cultural pride and validation of their achievements. Latina Sorority Involvement And The College Experience: Social And Academic Impact, Darilis Garcia-Mcmillian

Membership in a Latina-based sorority communicates messages to sisters as well as the university community. These messages usually reflected the goals and principles of the organization which is often what attracts women to join. Once they are part of the sorority their affiliation impacts their college experience. This study looks at the effect Greek membership has on participants' social and academic lives. Through narrative analysis the women's responses were examined to understand their perceptions of how joining Delta Tau Lambda Sorority impacted their college experience. Sitting On A Tinderbox': Racial Conflict, Teacher Discretion And The Centralization Of Disciplinary Authority, Judith R. Kafka

The centralization of school discipline in the second half of the twentieth century is widely understood to be the inevitable result of court decisions granting students certain civil rights in school. This study examines the process by which school discipline became centralized in the Los Angeles City School District in the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, and finds that the locus of control over student discipline shifted from the school site to the centralized district largely in response to local pressures. The Dominicans in New York is a display highlighting the experiences and contributions of the New York Dominican population. This exhibit uses primary source materials from the archival collections of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Archives as well as secondary source materials from the Dominican Library including documents, photographs and memorabilia to create a visual history of Dominicans as they developed communities that became integral part of New York’s incredibly diverse human landscape. The Costs Of Inadequate Education For New York State, Clive R. Belfield

Policy Documents

This paper calculates the economic consequences for the state of New York from failing to ensure that all students graduate from high school. The analyses in this report indicate that there are substantial economic benefits from raising the rate of high school graduation for New York state. These benefits can therefore be interpreted as the maximum amount that could be spent by federal and state/local governments on educational programs to improve the graduation rate.

Does Culture Matter? : Exploring The Relationships Among Parenting A Child With Disabilities, Cultural Identification, And Stress In A Group Of European American And Immigrant Latino Families, Ximena P. Suarez-Sousa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this correlational exploratory study was to delve into the experience of raising a child with disabilities by investigating the parents' level of stress and the role played by culture, acculturation, and various demographic variables suggested by the literature to influence stress were included. A purposive sample composed of 38 primarily undocumented immigrant Latino parents and 32 European American parents of children with disabilities was recruited from community agencies in a Midwest state. The most frequent disabilities were orthopedic impairments, pervasive developmental disorders, and mental retardation.

The Decline Of The Puerto Rican Fulltime Faculty At The City University Of New York (Cuny) From 1981-2002, Felipe Pimentel

We show in this brief how the Puerto Rican fulltime faculty at CUNY has been steadily declining while the number of Puerto Ricans earning doctorates has increased considerably since the early 1980s. This analysis intends to draw attention to this paradoxical situation by examining statistical information from dif-ferent data sources. Policy-makers at the City University have insufficiently addressed the historical underrepresentation of Puerto Rican fulltime faculty at this institution—to the point where this issue has become a serious question that needs to be thoroughly analyzed. Exploring The Education Profile And Pipeline For Latinos In New York State, Anthony De Jesús, Daniel W. Vasquez

Using various education and census databases 1this policy brief explores the Latino education pipeline in New York State and, where possible, uses disaggregated data to analyze the changes in educational enrollment, attainment, and achievement for Latinos between 1990 and 2000. The education pipeline represents the distribution of Latinos enrolled in pre-school through graduate and professional school in New York State as well as the education attainment levels of the adult population over 25 years of age.
