Why Not Pachucos? Mexican Americans, Hollywood, And The Impact Of Sleepy Lagoon In The 1940s And 1950s, Krystal Catalina Ledesma

The unsolved murder of a young Mexican American on the outskirts of Los Angeles in 1942—commonly known as the Sleepy Lagoon Murder—came at a pivotal time in Mexican American history. The consequent arrests, unjust trial, and imprisonment of over one dozen young Mexican American men caused such a stir that Sleepy Lagoon is considered a precursor to the infamous Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. “Mita Mita” asks audiences to reflect on the often discordant nature of identity development and how language, culture, and community impact this understanding. This piece is inspired by Gloria Anzaldua’s creation of the “mita y mita” framework in relation to border identity and politics theory as a way to conceptualize the doubling of identity that occurs between binaries. Through this lens, I attempt to dismantle the borders I have constructed around my identities by analyzing how reclaiming my name has begun to mend my sociocultural insecurities. Home: Transforming A Public Arts Grant Into A Community Project, Scarlett G. Baily
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Home is a 2,535 ft² site-specific mural in San Diego’s Liberty Station that reconnects the site’s military history with Kumeyaay Indigenous heritage and maritime culture. Through depictions of native flora and fauna, the work foregrounds overlooked origin stories and ecological knowledge of Point Loma. Developed through deep community collaboration, including Kumeyaay advisors and over 100 local participants, the mural fosters shared authorship and cultural continuity. It invites viewers to engage with alternative histories while supporting language revitalization and environmental awareness.

This Spotlight features a conversation with Professor Martha Gonzalez, a Chicana artivista (artist/activist) musician, feminist music theorist, and Associate Professor and Chair of the Intercollegiate Department of Chicana/o Latina/o Studies (CLS) at Scripps/Claremont College. The conversation draws from Prof. Gonzalez’s background as a Chicana, and the Chicanxs, Mexicanxs, Latinxs, and Indigenous communities in Mexico and Los Angeles that have shaped her work. Teaching During A Pandemic: Using Digital Visual Storytelling As Chicana/X/ And Latina/X Feminist Pedagogy, Magaly Ordonez
Feminist Pedagogy
This article offers critical pedagogical insights and experiences using StoryMaps as a queer trans* Chicanx educator during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. I offer StoryMaps as an original teaching activity rooted in Chicana/x feminist epistemologies and pedagogies that prioritize the voices of marginalized communities as sources of knowledge. I propose the pedagogical uses of digital storytelling as a Chicana/x feminist tool for creative critical thinking and shift in learning spaces that go beyond traditional essay-style writing assignments. It builds from my experience teaching undergraduate courses at a predominantly white institution in the Midwest.
