This project is an examination of correlations between imperial enterprises of the Second German Empire and the Nazi Reich through the lenses of global and imperial critiques. The three primary case studies are German Southwest Africa, the Ober Ost, and Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, particularly the General Government. This research draws heavily on certain themes and theories developed by leading historians of modern German and Eastern European history, including Timothy Snyder, Ben Kiernan, Shelley Baranowski, Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, and Christopher Browning. Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This study examines phonological and morphological features involved in the release of plural marking –s in nominal phrases of Spanish as a second language (L2). The linguistic variety belongs to Spanish spoken by members of the Ngäbe pueblo of Panama.

Despite the preference of final /s/ deletion in Panamanian Spanish, morphology seems to activate the production of plural marking –s in certain nominal phrases. Meanwhile, other circumstances stimulating the application of alternative strategies for plural marks are detected.

This study also includes questions about the influence of the first language (L1), particularly by comparing Ngäbere and Spanish nominal phrases. It …

This dissertation examines the flexibility in the social meanings of sociolinguistic stereotypes and how linguistic and non-linguistic information affect these meanings. The investigation consists of four empirical studies surrounding the case of fresas in Mexico –members of the upper class that are perceived as using a unique linguistic style.

Study 1 investigates the linguistic and non-linguistic characteristics associated with the fresa stereotype. Through a qualitative analysis of 64 webpages and 3 performances of the style, it is shown that fresasare perceived as the counterpart of another construct, nacos,and that their linguistic style is linked to English due to …

With so many people distributed in a vast area, there are several dialect groups which are closely related to the hometown of the different speakers. As of 2010, the Korean population living in Queens, NY was 64,107 (US Census). A majority of these Koreans live in Flushing, NY, which is also known as New York City’s Koreatown. A key characteristic of the Korean American community is the importance of the Korean church. Not only does it serve as a place of worship, but it also serves as a community center. Korean churches provide Korean language classes, Pre-K classes, visa workshops, opportunities to go on missionary trips, and meals for the elderly. Mental illness is a problem that is common East Asia, that hasn’t been properly acknowledged, or taken care of. Most common mental illness are depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and substance abuse. The common conception of mental illness is that the person is dangerous, and unpredictable. One of the most prevalent issues is depression, and a common symptom of depression is suicide. Depression can be interlinked with other mental illnesses which makes treatment more difficult.

Remembering Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—primarily as a domestic “civil rights” leader—is inadequate, and sometimes harmful. The term “civil rights” fails to embrace King’s abolitionist movements toward the global abolition of poverty and war. Moreover, King was a Baptist preacher called by God. He advanced an optimistic realism (including a “realistic pacifism”) that improves upon pessimistic-cynical versions of political realism. And King went beyond advancing “civil rights” to advancing economic justice, economic rights, and human rights. He prescribed adding a social and economic bill of rights to the US Constitution, plus full-employment supplemented by “guaranteed income,” …

The Latinx queer subjectivity complicates the racial and social discourses of the United States and Latin America, in both the academy and popular culture. The complex intersections of identity that marks the queer Latinx subject disrupts conventional narratives of race, ethnicity and culture, as well as gender and sexuality.

This project will look specifically at the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. Gayatry Chakravorty Spivak’s seminal work of Subaltern Studies, “Can the Subaltern Speak?” analyzed the predisposition of the “Western” academy to ultimately silence the voices, experiences, and cultures of colonized, “third world” and non- European “others”. Following Spivak’s work, other scholars examined subaltern speech as it manifested in various other cultural products for instance, music. Notably, subaltern scholars such as Rebecca Romanow and Amanda Weidman in “Can the Subaltern Sing” argued that aural space for the subaltern musician was shrinking in the face of a rapidly globalizing Euro-American music industry. Leslie García is from Lexington, Nebraska. She is the youngest daughter of Mexican immigrants. Her parents were well respected in their hometown, but they immigrated to the United States to build a better life for their family. García’s life has been marked by the experience she had growing up with Hispanic heritage in Lexington. García has extended family in California, Kansas, and Mexico, allowing her to experience the different cultures of both the United States and Mexico. This dissertation seeks to create a literary dialogue among the Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, the African American author Langston Hughes, and the Quebecois writer Antonio D’Alfonso. Giuseppe Ungaretti and Langston Hughes were more or less contemporaries. Ungaretti was born in 1888 and Hughes in 1902, and both were active in modernist movements that shaped the literary history of their own countries. D’Alfonso was born in Canada about half a center after Ungaretti and Hughes. Besides significant generational differences, these three authors also underwent personal and intellectual experiences that shaped their writing in seemingly incomparable ways. With intent of improving music pedagogy, the purpose of this research was to investigate swing music during World War II. This study examines the types of discrimination Latin@ college students in Iowa face in day-to-day life. The study focuses on both covert discrimination (i.e. microaggressions) as well as direct discrimination. Based on the analysis of ethnographic interviews with 8 undergraduate students at UNI, Latin@s face discrimination in three primary ways. The first is due to people making assumptions about them. The second way is through exoticizing Latin@s. These types of discrimination are often not recognized as offensive or derogatory by the wrongdoer. Lastly, Latin@s are often the recipients of language-based discrimination. This form of discrimination has to do with the …
