For some time now, four year institutions have been circulating the myth that education equals a job upon graduation. Along with this myth, the university system makes it appear as if this equation works across the board, for minority graduates as well as majority group members. A third prong of the falsehood is that a job or a career is the ultimate goal. Very little mention is ever made of self-sufficiency or entrepreneurship. The lackluster manner in which the American high school is teaching students, combined with selective admission programs at a number of post-secondary institutions, combine to give the majority of American students an important option: the community college. Furthermore, the rising wave of conservatism and right wing ideology can best be countered if these two-year institutions became "liberation laboratories," and emphasized the humanities and social sciences, with emphasis on critical reading, critical writing and critical thinking, This paper outlines how such an emphasis, pedagogy and curriculum could be established at the nation's two-year institutions.

Over the past few years, there has been increasing evidence that eating disorders are occurring in racial minorities and ethnic minorities in increasing numbers. This presentation will look at the evidence supporting this trend. We will also look at how eating disorders differ in different racial groups and ethnic minorities. We will explore the issue of acculturation and ethnic and racial identity.

African-American faculty are extremely valuable contributors to their respective areas. They bring direct knowledge of the strengths and needs of their communities and serve as role models to aspiring students. Unfortunately some African-American faculty are not successful at getting promotion and or tenure in part because of a lack of mentors and or a lack of clarity regarding tenure criteria. This paper focuses on four issues that are relevant to the tenure process, namely, politics, the publication process, developing a research agenda and submission of the tenure "package".

in the context of predominantly white institutions. In this paper concepts such as projection, projective identification, splitting, scapegoating, superiority and denial will be employed to illustrate why racial prejudice is a deeply-rooted collective psychological disorder that affects even educated mental health practitioners. Clinicians have an ethical responsibility to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and empathy when working with minority clients, colleagues, staff and students, to examine and root out their own prejudices, and to encourage others to do the same.

During March 2002 Oregon State University students took a non-traditional approach to learning about cross-cultural issues in Native America. The students lived five days in Burns, Oregon interacting with the Burns Paiute Tribe and non-Indian community stakeholders, thereby developing an understanding of the complex issues facing Oregon's Native American population.

This session is an overview of the strategies developed and implemented for the successful retention of minority students attained via successful collaborative efforts in recruiting. Utilizing shared objectives, connecting units for joint recruiting and retention efforts and the strategic use of resources has increased the retention rate of participating students to over eighty-five percent.
