Imagining The South Seas: Thoughts On The Sexual Politics Of Paradise In Samoa, Sharon W. Tiffany

Pacific Studies

Controversy generated by criticism of research Margaret Mead conducted nearly three-quarters of a century ago reminds us that modern ethnography came of age with fieldwork conducted on the sexual lives of Pacific Islanders. The Samoa debate suggests that an exotic eroticism continues to inform representations of women in anthropological writings and popular culture, and that Samoa is a candidate for sexual paradise on earth. This article explores the image-making of paradise by examining book covers and photographs associated with Margaret Mead’s and Derek Freeman’s narratives of Samoa. As cultural artifacts, book covers and photographs offer an intriguing way of investigating …

In the early 1890s, the Colonial Sugar Refinery Company (CSR) introduced Japanese men to their sugar plantations in Fiji and Queensland because man- agement believed they would prove to be superior workers to other “coloured” labor. In Fiji, an outbreak of beriberi killed many of the Japanese. The medical establishment attributed this to an infective agent, instead of diet, so there was fear the disease could spread. CSR quickly abandoned the costly “experiment” in Fiji. In Queensland, however, the company successfully controlled a beriberi outbreak by altering the rations, though for fear of contaminated food rather than for balanced diet. …

Legal Discretion In A Territorial Justice System: The Case Of The Territory Of Guam, Daniel A. Lennon

A sociologist examines the place of customs and tradition in the definition of “legal discretion” in the Territory of Guam, a dependency of the United States, utilizing the concept of double-institutionalism as the basis for such definition in the resolution of the dialectic between custom and law. The contemporary resolutions between customary practices and constitutional law in Guam are de- scribed and evaluated using both written and interview material. The findings suggest the internal politics of a state is the synthesis of this dialectic between custom and law. The absence of constitutional bases in law in any political state necessarily …

This record, dated August 30, 2001, is a transcript of a follow-up hearing with the Three Affiliated Tribes and Standing Rock Nation to evaluate how the 1992 Equitable Compensation Act has served the tribes and if it has helped restore economic stability. Testimony from tribal members indicates that many promises made prior to the building of the dam were never met, that the promises were met were fulfilled 40-45 years after the dam was built, and, more importantly, that what was lost can never be compensated for with money. Throughout Native American Literature the state of identity in connection to one’s tribal culture, nature, and spirituality is vital to understanding both the struggles that Native Americans have endured during contact with Europeans and then Americans and the current ongoing cultural negotiations of contemporary tribal peoples. Native American writers use literature as a venue to reclaim and reconstruct identity, particularly in relation to a rapidly changing and commercial world.

Disordered Eating And Its Psychosocial Correlates Among Hispanic Adolescent Females, Annette Santiago

This study investigated the incidence of disordered eating and its relationship with acculturation, depression, and body dissatisfaction among Hispanic adolescent females. One hundred and five students enrolled at two midwestem high schools completed a Student Demographic Questionnaire, the Bidimensional Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (Marin & Gamba, 1996), the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996), the Body Dissatisfaction Subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory (Gamer, Olmstead, & Polivy, 1983), and the Eating Attitudes Test (Gamer, Olmstead, Bohr, & Garfinkel, 1982). We hypothesized that Chinese Americans with disabilities may remain culturally attached to their ancestors' homeland and this cultural attachment may have influences on the concept of Quality of Life (QOL). That is, QOL may be perceived, by Chinese Americans with disabilities, not only as an individual's satisfaction with his or her life, but also the person's fulfillment of his or her responsibilities to his or her family and community. Of course, this hypothesis needs to be examined. Such an investigation may provide rehabilitation counselors with insights into the meaning of QOL from the viewpoint of Chinese Americans with disabilities. It …

In a passionate keynote address at the third in CLAGS's series of "Crossing Borders" conferences, Cherríe Moraga called on conference participants to "hold the pussy in public," to join otherwise isolated Latina/o artists in bringing racialized queerness into public debate. Investigations of the sexual Other generally attempt to explain sexual practices by characterizing their practitioners as "homosexual" or "gay." Jossianna Arroyo, Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of Michigan, went beyond this approach during her March 28 colloquium presentation, "Brazilian Homoerotics: Cultural Subjectivity and Representation in Gilberto Freyre." Arroyo explores not just sexual practices but also the construction of the Brazilian nation through a reading of Gilberto Freyre's two novels, Dona Sinha e o Filho Padre (1964) and O Outro Amor de Dr. Paulo (1977).

In this essay the author examines the "Oprah Effect" on the career of Toni Morrison, who after three appearances on "Oprah's Book Club" has become the most dramatic example of postmodernism's merger between Morrison's canonical status and Winfrey's commercial power has superseded the publishing industry's field of normative whiteness, enabling Morrison to reach a broad, popular audience while being marketed as artistically important.
