Lived Experiences Of Black Male Ex-Offenders In Recovery, Sheila Khadijah Hameen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAlthough a body of literature aimed at documenting the positive effects of the rehabilitative qualities of Alcoholics Anonymous existed, much of the research examining the ways that Black members make use of AA focuses on ethnic and cultural differences that may affect the way that members engage in AA because they are Black as opposed to what qualities (i.e., social support) AA has that may appeal to Black members. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the experience of Black male ex-offenders’ choice of AA as a self-help program for recovery. Social control theory was used as …

Barriers And Support To The Successful Postsecondary Transition Of Virgin Islands Males With A Specific Learning Disability, Marissa S. Johnson Rogers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The post high school transition for males with a specific learning disability (SLD) can be challenging. Unemployment among persons with disabilities was markedly higher than those without. There was also mounting evidence that showed that persons with disabilities had difficulties adjusting to post-secondary environments. For male students with disabilities, their post-secondary experience was impacted by the support services received, both at school and within their community. Little was known about the post-secondary experiences of minority males with SLD. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore post-secondary transition experiences among Virgin Islands male high school graduates with SLD. Particularly, …

Correctional Education And Response To Prison Reentry Of African American Men, Robert Reddick
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is limited knowledge of how correctional education programs prepare rural African American men for reentry into society after incarceration. The purpose of this study was to learn how young, rural African American men between the ages of 20 to 30 years perceived their experiences of technical correctional education programs and how such programs aided in reducing recidivism during their reentry process from incarceration. This qualitative study was guided by the institutional theory which purported that correctional education should be based on the population served and not on mirroring other institutions. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, data were collected from …

Contributing Factors To Mammography Screening Among African American And Hispanic Women: Quantitative Correlation Study, Candace Russell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, breast cancer screening has one of the highest morbidities and mortality among minority women with cancer. The purpose of the study was to examine the statistical relationship between income, education level, age, and mammography screening among African American and Hispanic women between 2019 and 2021. The literature review suggested that there was a gap in research for contributing factors with mammography screening among African American and Hispanic women. Secondary data sets from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System between 2019 and 2021 were used to conduct a correlational design and a theoretical framework TCSB constructs. Criteria …
Overcoming Barriers To Executive Leadership Advancement Of Nurses From Racial And Ethnic Minority Backgrounds, Ena M. Williams
Overcoming Barriers To Executive Leadership Advancement Of Nurses From Racial And Ethnic Minority Backgrounds, Ena M. Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The social problem is the underrepresentation of nurses with racial and ethnic minority backgrounds in executive nursing leadership positions as compared to the general population. The management problem is that even when academically prepared, nurses with racial and ethnic minority backgrounds perceive that they face both singular and systemic barriers to promotional opportunities to executive nurse positions, which can lead to negative organizational and societal outcomes. A literature gap exists as to why this phenomenon persists. The purpose of this qualitative, narrative inquiry study was to explore the personal stories and lived experiences of a purposive sample of 17 executive …
The Narratives Of Cross-Cultural Misidentification And Exoneration In Wrongly Convicted Men, Miki L. Ross-Elster
The Narratives Of Cross-Cultural Misidentification And Exoneration In Wrongly Convicted Men, Miki L. Ross-Elster
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Wrongful conviction is often due to misidentification, particularly cross-cultural misidentification. DNA errors and other influences (including weapon focus effect, mugshot error, police suggestibility) also increase the risk of wrongful conviction, and the process of exoneration is onerous. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experience of cross-cultural misidentification, wrongful conviction, exoneration, and the return to society of formerly incarcerated men. Implicit bias theory served as the theoretical framework and refers to both attitudes and stereotypes that people hold without realizing it and which unconsciously affect the way they see a particular person or event. A narrative analysis …

Pink Bamboo Ceiling: Barriers And Breakthroughs For Asian American Women Leaders, Mele W. Kramer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAsian Americans are the most diverse and fastest-growing minority group in the U.S. and have the highest average level of education of all minority and dominant groups in America making up 6.2 % of the labor market. However, Asian Americans overall hold one percent of the executive leadership roles in Fortune 500 organizations. Low leadership representation leaves this demographic without a decision-making voice and without power in society. The purpose of this qualitative study was to learn about the lived experiences of Asian American women (AAW) leaders and potential leaders as it pertains to race, gender, and stereotypes in the …

Hysterectomy And Self-Esteem Among African American Women, Gibson T. Green
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractOver 600,000 hysterectomies are performed each year in the United States. Studies have shown that African American women are disproportionately impacted by hysterectomy and that most African American women treated with hysterectomy are young and of childbearing age. As a result, some African American women’s spouses have negative perceptions about the surgery. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of hysterectomy on self-esteem or satisfaction among African American women and feelings of partner rejection after a hysterectomy. Sociometer theory (the study of self-esteem) was used to examine an association between hysterectomy and self-esteem or satisfaction. The study …

Intersectionality And Community-Based Counseling: Experience Of African American Female Sexual Minority Youth, Lauren Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The social problem examined in this qualitative analysis is the limited available knowledge on the experience of ethnic minorities who are also sexual minority youth. Sexual minority youth are at increased risk of experiencing mental health disparities compared to their heterosexual peers. Due to the increased risk for psychosocial stressors such as substance use, suicidal ideation, suicidal attempts, homelessness, and trauma, clinicians should be aware of the intersectionality of identifying as a sexual minority youth who is also an ethnic minority. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the experiences of African American sexual minority female youth ages …

The underutilization of mental health services amongst African American families has been a long-standing concern in the African American community within large metropolitan cities in Texas. The metropolitan cities are Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and McAllen. There remain experiences that impede families’ ability to engage in mental health services. These experiences involve the conflict between prayer and therapy, stigma, lack of awareness of local mental health services, and cultural competency. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore experiences of African American families and how those experiences affect mental health engagement, as well as how practicing …
Exploring The Influences Of Culture On Hand-Hygiene Beliefs Of Foreign-Born Healthcare Workers, Sheila Blanche Davis
Exploring The Influences Of Culture On Hand-Hygiene Beliefs Of Foreign-Born Healthcare Workers, Sheila Blanche Davis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe hand-hygiene practices of nonadherent health care workers (HCWs) are a major threat to patient safety and thus continue to be a concern for healthcare leaders and administrators worldwide. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), which are linked to HCWs' unclean hands, are prevalent throughout global healthcare settings. Global migration in the nursing profession and intercontinental travel among direct patient care providers make it challenging for healthcare leaders to sustain HCWs' adherence to hand-hygiene practices. The purpose of this grounded study was to explore the influence of the cultural beliefs about hand-hygiene practices of foreign-born HCWs. The theory of planned behavior was used …
