The Black Professor's Burden: Teaching African-American Literature And Culture In A White Classroom , Saunda Liggins

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

As an African-American female at a predominantly White college, I feel the added senseof duty that other women and minorities in academia frequently feel, the pull to serve not only as a teacher but also as a mentor, advisor, and role model for minority students on campus. As one of two professors who teach African American Literature and Culture - and the only African American -I also feel, perhaps mistakenly, as if I am viewed by the White students, and maybe by the African American students as well, as the ambassador to African-American culture. I sense that the White students …

Crossing Boundaries To Engage In Difficult Dialogues , Judy A Rutledge Purnell

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

Crossing boundaries that lead to difficult dialogue touches upon the core of my academic existence. I teach about Africa and the world of Africans on a small predominately white campus outside of a major metro area. The topics that are introduced in my classes cross over many academic areas. With Africa as the starting point of all discussions, students gradually develop an "Afrocentric" perspective per the discussions of Asante. Not because it is the focus of the class, but because Africa is the origin of civilization according to Diop and others.

Mamluk Rugs From Egypt: Jewels Of The Textile Museum's Collection (Exhibition), Carol Bier Jan 2003

Mamluk Rugs From Egypt: Jewels Of The Textile Museum's Collection (Exhibition), Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Mamluk rugs are considered by many to be among the most beautiful of any rugs ever created. The brilliant reds, greens, and blues (figs. 1 and 2) are reminiscent of rubies, emeralds and sapphires; whether this was an intentional evocation is not known. But The Textile Museum's holdings of Mamluk rugs, unparalleled in the world, are truly the "jewels" of the collection. Simply by virtue of the fact that they date from the late 15th century, Mamluk rugs comprise one of the most significant groups of classical carpets. Their lustrous wool and wondrous color, as well as their geometric designs …

The fall of Granada in 1492 reestablished Christian dominion in Spain after centuries of Islamic rule. The rapid expansion of Islam from Arabia in the 7th century encompassed the rich cultural legacy of the Late Antique world, forging a unified empire throughout the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean lands and across North Africa to Spain within a short span of several decades. Arab and Berber armies had crossed into Spain in 711, generating at once an effort that lasted for many generations to restore Christian rule. In Islamic times, the Iberian peninsula was called al-Andalus, or Andalusia. Although we have …

The Initiative through the success of its programming revealed that minority student organizations were instrumental in student retention at both the college and pre-college levels. Moreover, an unintended consequence of this synergy is the recruitment of minority students to the university.

Arizona State Unamerican Indian Education , Autumn Weaver Nov 2002

Arizona State Unamerican Indian Education , Autumn Weaver

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

Federal rules prohibited American Indian children attending boarding schools from using their native languages until the 1930's. Success would be more attainable for Indian students if the university implemented programs that acknowledge American Indian experience and contributions. Non-Indian students would also benefit from learning about the Indian experiences in United States history. Culturally relevant programming and a visible Native presence would increase both the quality of education and the university's retention of American Indian students.
