We have calendars in the American continent that go back thousands of years. Researchers today confirm that these calendars not only measure the Macro-cosmos: They are also a sophisticated charting of the inner-world, particularly the dynamics between the body, the emotions, and the multiple elements that constitute our Self. These views are represented in calendars, ancient codices, and pre-Hispanic ceremonial centers. They are also alive in popular views, and traditional healing practices known today as “Curanderismo.” One of these perspectives is the use of the four suns. This presentation will explore this perspective.

This is an interactive presentation of a husband and wife team in which results of a methodological triangulation study that compares and contrasts ethnic minority faculty at both predominantly white and predominately ethnic minority institutions on bicultural and occupational stress are discussed. The investigator-generated, Bicultural System’s Conceptual Model, is used to interpret results and derive strategies for achieving a climate more conducive to optimal engagement of all faculty. Seven themes emerge from this study: Appraising, Proving, Fitting-In, Defending, Distancing, Being Invisible, and Mentoring are discussed in light of coping strategies used by ethnic minorities in bicultural settings. They have acquired an “equivalent” rank of “as if equal” non-white elite in a non-white world separate (de facto) and unequal that is an imitation of the white world. The socioeconomic hierarchy is an abstract, powerless dependent world in a colony-like state. December 26, 1862, marked the culmination of the brutal hostilities that transpired between the Dakota Indians and American soldiers and settlers over the late summer and fall months in Minnesota. The American government condemned thirtyeight Dakota men to die on the gallows as punishment for their involvement in the war. While the event served as punishment for the Dakotas, it was also a culturally pregnant spectacle that provides deeper insight into not only the war but also Dakotan and American societies. The hanging was just as much about manhood, sexuality, and race, as it was about retribution.

Considering the relationship of symmetry and beauty, the author examines three textiles from the collection of Doris Duke at Shangri La in Honolulu. Referring to abstract expressionism of the 20th century as antithetical to symmetry, and the Arts & Crafts Movement of the 19th century as countering the insistency of industrial mass production, Bier explores the relative roles of symmetry and symmetry-breaking in the construction of three embroideries (called suzani, after the Persian and Tajik word for “needlework”), using as her point of departure a recent research initiative, the Shangri La Suzani Project. This paper proceeds from a historical study in progress of caste in the United States. That study will argue that the distinctive feature of slavery in the United States was that --unlike in Brazil or the Caribbean -servitude in the Anglophone mainland developed a caste ideal, ideologized as "race ". As with dalits in India, people identified as "black" in what became the United States an excluded hereditary caste destined ascriptively to the meanest labor, and excluded systematically and ideologically from the dominant ("white”) group.
