This study explored Rarotongan core values that elders in Rarotonga considered might be important for inclusion in a physical education program. To date, there has been no study on Rarotongan core values in physical education. The study of Rarotongan core values will benefit Rarotongan schools in the area of physical education. This will revive some of the cultural traditional practices that have been discouraged. Rarotongan core values will encourage students' participation in physical education. Findings of the study address the needs of a policy that will enhance students' participation in physical education if used in a culturally responsive way.

The German prince Maximilian of WiedNeuwied (1782-1867) traveled up the Missouri River in 1832-33 to study American Indian culture before it was fatally compromised by the encroachment of Euro-American civilization. Aware of the expansionist and industrial dynamics of the Jacksonian Era in the United States, Maximilian wanted to study what he regarded as the vanishing Indian while there was still time. The idea had come to him during his 1815-17 journey through Brazil. This paper follows the relationship between the first substantive governor of Fiji, Sir Arthur Hamilton Gordon, and Adolphe de Plevitz, a Frenchman by birth, who held strong beliefs about the supremacy of British justice and equality. The setting is two tiny British colonies, Mauritius and Fiji, in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In Fiji, Gordon encouraged the importation of indentured Indian workers to develop Queen Victoria’s newest colony; yet in Mauritius, his previous posting, he had reluctantly initiated a Royal Commission into the inequitable treatment of Indians who remained on the island after their period of indenture had …

Fiji's 2006 coup was partially carried out as a response by Bainimarama to three pieces of legislation debated by the Qarase government. One was the Qoliqoli Act. Under the act, rights to the seabed, foreshore, and indigenous fisheries of Fiji would be invested in indigenous landowners. This was a long time in the making and would have recognized the rights of customary owners to coasts and other waterways. The legislation is stalled but may be revived in the future as indigenous Fijians demand to have land under their own control. Whether some compromise is ever reached and whether it ever …

On 18 May 2009, the Director of Liquor Licensing announced that alcohol restrictions would be instigated in Halls Creek for an indefinite period (see Appendix 1). These restrictions amounted to a prohibition on the takeaway sale of full-strength alcohol¹ exceeding a concentration of ethanol and liquor of 2.7% at 20oC to all but liquor merchants. The Licensee of the Kimberley Hotel was also prohibited from selling and supplying liquor for consumption on the premises before 12:00 midday on any day except when it is sold ancillary to a meal or to a lodger. This research focused on the detrimental effects of climate change on indigenous peoples in Latin America. Indigenous peoples throughout the region tend to live subsistence livelihoods, which tie them closely to their land and the surrounding environment. This close relationship often means that indigenous peoples acutely experience the effects of climate change and are more susceptible to its negative outcomes than other populations. Further, indigenous peoples in the region lack the mitigation and adaptation capacities to deal with damaging climatic effects.

This study considers how inter-tribal Indian identity formed though historic circumstances and how it is negotiated and maintained by contemporary Native Americans. Specifically, it considers identity formation and negotiation through the inter-tribal dance event, powwow. Further, it considers how and if men and women participate in this identity formation and negotiation differently. Finally, it considers how this identity is useful for urban Indian populations living outside of tribal lands and who, in some cases, have little involvement in more traditional, or tribal, settings.

Following the American Revolution, the new United States government and its citizenry greedily cast their eyes westward across the expansive trans-Appalachian frontier. The contest between the region’s native peoples, Anglo-American westerners, and Spanish colonists for the trans-Appalachian West began long before the first shots of the Revolution were fired at Lexington & Concord. From the near perpetual regional Indian warfare to the diplomatic maneuverings of Euroamerican backcountry leaders, the struggle to control the land the Indians called the “western waters” defined borderland relations for most of the 18th century.
