Acculturation Among Swedish Immigrants In Kansas And Nebraska, 1870–1900, Terrence Jon Lindell

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Contemporary observers and many historians have maintained that Swedish immigrants rapidly assimilated into American society. This dissertation examines this conclusion by focusing on rural Swedish settlements in the Great Plains--the Lindsborg community in McPherson and Saline counties in Kansas and Burt, Phelps, Polk, and Saunders counties In Nebraska.

These immigrant communities, all founded in the two decades following the Civil War, typically were estabIished by Swedes who had spent some time in states east of the Great Plains and had thus already begun to assimilate. Irish Immigrants In Terre Haute, Indiana In 1860: A Comparative Study, Sharon Bryant Hinkle

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study compares the experiences of Irish immigrants in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1860 with those of Irish immigrants in the port cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. Adjustment and identity are the main points of comparison. While all immigrants experienced difficulty in adjusting to life in a new country, the Catholic Irish who fled their famine-ridden homeland to Protestant-dominated nineteenthcentury America encountered special problems engendered by a fear of the Catholic church. Their adjustment to this hostile environment was made on three levels--economic, social and political. Economic adjustment involved occupational skill levels, employment, income, and property …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In 1963, the shock waves of the sit-in movement and the growing black unrest throughout the country reached Huntington. This growing discontent with the status quo of segregation and racial discrimination and the impulse from the sit-in movement for direct, non-violent protest combined to mobilize several students at Marshall University who formed the Civic Interest Progressives (CIP), a biracial civil rights group.
