He maintains that his team was not racially discriminated against as they travelled. …

Monograph Series
The African American Professors Program (AAPP) at the University of South Carolina is pleased to produce the second edition of its annual monograph series. It is fitting that the program contrives to assume a leadership role in promoting scholarly products that prove to be useful in research endeavors by faculty and students in higher education.
Scholars who have contributed manuscripts for this monograph are to be commended for adding this additional responsibility to their academic workload. Writing across disciplines adds to the intellectual diversity of these papers. From neophytes, relatively speaking, to an array of very experienced individuals, the chapters …

Grandparent Care In The African-American Population, Jan Mutchler, Seungah Lee, Lindsey A. Baker
Grandparent Care In The African-American Population, Jan Mutchler, Seungah Lee, Lindsey A. Baker
Gerontology Institute Publications
The purpose of this report is to provide information on African-American grandparent caregivers in the United States. Many grandparents are responsible for grandchildren who live with them in the same household. The 1996 Welfare Reform Act mandates that statistics be collected on grandparents who serve as caregivers to a grandchild. In response to this requirement, questions were developed for the 2000 Census of Population asking each adult about care for grandchildren living in the same household. We use the census information to identify grandparents who are caring for grandchildren in two different types of households: skipped-generation households, in which a …
Raising Cultural Awareness In The Elementary Classroom Through African-American Children's Literature, Kirsten Seebeck
Raising Cultural Awareness In The Elementary Classroom Through African-American Children's Literature, Kirsten Seebeck
Graduate Research Papers
This research project topic was selected because of the need for raised cultural awareness in elementary classrooms, as indicated in current research findings. I chose African-American literature because in this region of the United States, Iowa in particular, the classrooms tend to be largely homogenous. Children who are from African-American descent find themselves to be in the minority in their classroom settings.
These children are not seeing many other children like themselves in their school community. It is therefore important that they see themselves in the literature shared within this community, in order to help them to relate to their …

"Return To Sender": Confronting Lynching And Our Haunted Landscapes, Mark J. Auslander
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
This article considers a set of controversial images, primarily taken between 1880 and 1920, depicting lynchings and racial violence. Emory University has made these images publicly available, prompting some to worry that the collection will re-inflict trauma on those who suffered under racism in the United States. The articles asks, in part: if new initiatives in museums or other public spaces could help Americans to collectively confront their inner demons and move beyond the timeless repetition of trauma.
The article is available from Southern Changes: The Journal of the Southern Regional Council, 1978-2003.
