A philosophic account of quantum physics. The thesis is divided into two parts. Part I is dedicated to laying the groundwork of quantum physics, and explaining some of the primary difficulties. Subjects of interest will include the principle of locality, the quantum uncertainty principle, and Einstein's criterion for reality. Quantum dilemmas discussed include the double-slit experiment, observations of spin and polarization, EPR, and Bell's theorem. The first part will argue that mathematical-physical descriptions of the world fall short of explaining the experimental observations of quantum phenomenon. Vagueness, Ignorance, And Margins For Error, Kenton Machina, Harry Deutsch

We argue that the epistemic theory of vagueness cannot adequately justify its key tenet–that vague predicates have precisely bounded extensions, of which we are necessarily ignorant. Nor can the theory adequately account for our ignorance of the truth values of borderline cases. Furthermore, we argue that Williamson's promising attempt to explicate our understanding of vague language on the model of a certain sort of "inexact knowledge" is at best incomplete, since certain forms of vagueness do not fit Williamson's model, and in fact fit an alternative model. This thesis is an exposition and clarification of two lectures on freedom of the will delivered by Ludwig Wittgenstein in 1939. Wittgenstein asks whether it makes sense to say that the "decision of a person was not free because it was determined by natural laws." I offer a brief explanation and defense of Wittgenstein's method of linguistic analysis, then proceed in its spirit. Associated with the words 'determined' and 'free' are certain pictures which, if misapplied, may lead us to misjudge their function. Among these are the picture of natural laws as "rails" that compel events, and that the meaning …

Truth, Belief, And Vagueness, Kenton Machina

Formal mathematical logic is designed to capture the logical form of mathematical statements, all of which employ precisely defined concepts, unlike the concepts found in natural languages, almost all of which are vague. In this paper I argue that in order to more accurately represent the logical form of vague natural language statements, formal logic should employ degrees of truth and falsehood, rather than assuming just the two truth “values” T and F. I explore in detail the most reasonable definitions for basic logical operations in a system that allows for degrees of truth, concluding that one of the multi-valued …

The author attempts an in-depth study of Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason in order to prepare a text for college students in composition courses. It was to be a text designed to help students come to terms with some of the more perplexing problems of man's intellectual life by providing them with the means for understanding the structure of thought. As it stands now, though, this is a prolegomen to that text.
