Teksto Ni Danton Remoto Bilang Kontra-Diskurso Laban Sa Homopobikong Kamalayan, Marielle Clave Gidalanga

Mabini Review

Danton Remoto is known as one of the prominent writers who greatly contributed to Philippine gay literature. His texts may be considered as effective instruments for challenging and dismantling repressive homophobic consciousness that has been deeply rooted in our culture and society. Thus, selected texts by Remoto were examined as gay literature and as counter-discourse that presents metanarratives vis-à-vis the condemnation of prevailing homophobic consciousness in the Philippines. Using thematic and close reading approach in 16 selected essays from his three collections – Buhay Bading (2004), Rampa: Mga Sanaysay (2008) and Bright, Catholic, and – Gay (2011), four counter-discursive strategies …

Limit Of Labels: Examining The ‘Masc’ And ‘Femme’ Labels In Wlw Relationships Through Judith Butler’S Theory Of Performativityauthors, Nikky Garo Mar 2026

Limit Of Labels: Examining The ‘Masc’ And ‘Femme’ Labels In Wlw Relationships Through Judith Butler’S Theory Of Performativityauthors, Nikky Garo

Mabini Review

Judith Butler’s theory of performativity emphasizes the idea that gender is constructed through a series of repeated acts. Within this framework, labels such as ‘masc’ and ‘femme’ can play a role in shaping gender identity and expression, especially in womenloving- women (WLW) relationships. Even though queerness is famously understood as a space for challenging gender norms, and WLW relationships to that extension should be a site for gender fluidity, the use of these labels in WLW relationships can reinforce patriarchal structures by replicating binary gender expressions. The act of labeling oneself or one’s partner as ‘masc’ or ‘femme’ is evidence …

Wikang Filipino At Ang Diskurso Ng Kasarian: Ang Misgendering Kay Jude Bacalso Bilang Salamin Ng Panlipunang Pananaw, Ignatius Vinzons Mar 2026

Wikang Filipino At Ang Diskurso Ng Kasarian: Ang Misgendering Kay Jude Bacalso Bilang Salamin Ng Panlipunang Pananaw, Ignatius Vinzons

Mabini Review

The absence of grammatical gender in Filipino pronouns and some nouns has led some to claim that the Filipino language is gender neutral. However, cases of misgendering are undeniably present in our society. If the Filipino language is truly gender-neutral, how does misgendering occur in our context? This paper discusses the concept of misgendering, examines some of its examples in the Philippine context, and revisits literature on the supposed gender-neutrality of the Filipino language. It then analyzes the case of Jude Bacalso, a transgender woman who became a topic of public discourse on social media in July 2024 due to …

Bodies Will Be Bodies?: A Case For Legitimate Body Objectiveness, Renz Villacampa Mar 2026

Bodies Will Be Bodies?: A Case For Legitimate Body Objectiveness, Renz Villacampa

Mabini Review

Confined in spatiotemporal structures and relations, the body is caught in the linearity of economic production and the rigidity of ideological imperatives. In this setup, the objectiveness of the body is suspected of putting a person to a limit. This further interrogates and accuses the body of facilitating its own objectification. Here, I challenged prominent objections to the objectiveness of the body, particularly those coming from Marcel and the early/material feminist traditions. I then put forward a case in which the active-operative instrumentalization of the body is legitimized sans discounting the body as an addendum or mere physical extension. Further, …

Investigating Linguistic Sexismin Popular Ilokano Songs, Salirick Andres Nov 2024

Investigating Linguistic Sexismin Popular Ilokano Songs, Salirick Andres

Mabini Review

This study investigates linguistic sexism within the lyrics of ten popular Ilokano songs using Sarah Mills’ feminist stylistics framework. Analysis focused on both word-level and discourse-level elements, exploring how gender roles and biases are embedded in song lyrics. Despite the pervasive presence of gendered language in many cultures, this research reveals that the selected Ilokano songs largely employ gender-neutral language and portray both male and female characters without obvious bias. The absence of gendered generic words and balanced descriptions of characters challenge traditional views on linguistic sexism in Ilokano, a language spoken by millions in the Philippines and globally. These …

Hetairas: The Pre-Feminist Empowered Women Of The Western Antiquity, Ronel De Loyola, Werllie Bueno Nov 2024

Hetairas: The Pre-Feminist Empowered Women Of The Western Antiquity, Ronel De Loyola, Werllie Bueno

Mabini Review

Women being equal to men is a rare episode in antiquity. However, the existence of hetairas proves that the oppression of women throughout history cannot be steadily maintained as the sole relationship between the sexes, where men always dictate the dynamics of power. The strategic utilization of their sexuality enabled hetairas to participate in the intellectual, political, and artistic fields; such experience of a select group of women should be seen as a nuanced exposition of women’s history before the advent of the feminist movement. The hetaira, whose identity was associated with the elite sympotic culture, was antithetical to both …

Reflections On Misogyny And Women Doing Philosophy In The Philippines, Jeniel Dasig Nov 2024

Reflections On Misogyny And Women Doing Philosophy In The Philippines, Jeniel Dasig

Mabini Review

In this paper, I argue that despite the prominent and progressive structure of the discipline of philosophy, it is not exempt from the perpetuation of the gender-based form of oppression. The fortunate ratio of women doing philosophy today obscures the extent to which misogyny is seen and felt. Even in what seems to be a gender-egalitarian setting like academia, the subtle, indirect, and sometimes unintentional verbal and behavioral offenses against women function as a mechanism of systemic oppression. It is a manifestation of the restrained form of misogyny that enforces the hierarchical, patriarchal order in academia. In this light, I …

Mabini Review

This study contributes to the emerging literature that supports the link between women’s economic empowerment and better child health outcomes. Utilizing secondary data from the 2017 Philippine National Demographic and Health Survey, the status of women empowerment as represented by women’s education, employment, and intrahousehold bargaining power and the status of child health outcomes in terms of antenatal care, childhood immunization, and under-5 mortality were analyzed in this research. The findings can be connected with the current health crisis being experienced in the Philippines. The recent Pertussis outbreak showed that there is a need for urgent action to improve the …

Novels Of The 20 Th Century Analyzed Basedon Marilyn Frye’S Oppression, Mary Sarah Angoluan Nov 2024

Novels Of The 20 Th Century Analyzed Basedon Marilyn Frye’S Oppression, Mary Sarah Angoluan

Mabini Review

Novels have been considered mirrors of social realities. In Soledad S. Reyes’ work Values of Love and Marriage in the Tagalog Novels (1980), with the help of 25 novels, Reyes reveals the Filipino concept of love and marriage and how such concepts are influenced by parents, society, and family members to adhere to the idealized love and marriage. Taking Reyes’ work as true, this paper will look into Reyes’ work and her conclusion that the concept of love and marriage are networks that oppress women based on Marilyn Frye’s Oppression (2000). Hence, this paper will conclude that despite Reyes’ work …

My Fifty Shades Of Grey: The Ambivalenceof Sexism In E.L. James Erotica, Agnes Sunga Nov 2024

My Fifty Shades Of Grey: The Ambivalenceof Sexism In E.L. James Erotica, Agnes Sunga

Mabini Review

This paper focuses on the manifestation of two forms of sexism in the popular novel of E.L. James. By making use of content analysis, a method used to obtain the objective, systematic, and content manifest of communication, this research seeks to find a weave of similar patterns present in the literary work. The representation of patriarchy, sexism, and gender stereotypes through the characters, plot, setting, theme, and literary symbols employed in the story were used as coding categories in the novel. The author made use of Glick and Fiske’s concept of hostile and benevolent sexism to create a distinction between …
