Self-Surrendering Love: Initial Musings On Karuna And Caritas, Wesley Kim Soguilon Mar 2026

Self-Surrendering Love: Initial Musings On Karuna And Caritas, Wesley Kim Soguilon

Mabini Review

he paper explores and exposes the connections between the Buddhist virtue Karuna and the Christian virtue Caritas. Employing a text-based analysis approach, the paper argues that both Karuna and Caritas have intersections, though their origins and inherent development in each religious tradition differ. After the exploration and exposition, it is found out that both virtues may be considered expressions of self-surrendering love whereby a faithful person sets aside oneself for the greater or common good, much more the good of the other. This is exemplified by the Bodhisattvas and the Saints, two interesting religious figures in Buddhism and Christianity, respectively.

Learning Spaces, Others And Self: The “I—Learning” Experience Of Philosophy Students In Achieving Learning Competencies In A Pandemic, Mark Gatus

Academic programs set learning competencies as essential standards to ensure that students acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and values. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) prescribed the competencies for the AB Philosophy Program through CMO No. 26 s. 2017, which includes the ability to demonstrate critical and logical thinking, construct cogent arguments, engage analytically and interpretively with philosophical texts, develop research and academic writing skills, apply philosophical theories to concrete situations, and critically evaluate the essence of philosophical learning in relation to the True, the Good, and the Just. However, the teaching-learning process was disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising …

Profane Language: On The Philosophy Of Cursing In The Contemporary Era, Billy Jan Puerta

Mabini Review

Politeness is a foundational virtue, instilled from an early age, that fosters human connections and societal engagement. This virtue underscores the tremendous relationship between language and courtesy, highlighting the values of respect in interaction within the community fabric. Language's nature, as a reflection of culture, community, and identity, is analyzed, revealing its capacity to uphold or erode these societal pillars. Despite its potential as a pillar of politeness, profane language presents an ironical contradiction. Profane language mo, mostly known as cursing, emerges as a cultural taboo, marked by its aggressive and often deemed inappropriate nature. This paper dives into why …

A Way Through Pandemic: Daoist Insights During The Covid-19 Crisis, Marck Zaldy Camba

Mabini Review

The COVID-19 crisis has made most Filipinos reconsider, rethink, and reprioritize various aspects of their lives. While they are well-known for their resiliency, they are not immune to experiencing fear, anxiety, uncertainties, and other disruptions, as these are inevitable experiences during crises, particularly pandemics. While the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a public health crisis, there is a fear that it also provoked an existential one. This paper explores the philosophical insights of Daoism and its practicality and relevance to navigating such crises. In what ways can Daoist insights guide us regarding the right way(s) to manage ourselves during the crisis? How …

The research aimed to (1) assess his rhetorical approach and its hierarchy in his speeches, (2) identify the rhetorical tenets and the consistency of their hierarchy in his discourses, and (3) outline his rhetorical approach and tenets, as well as his effectiveness as a lay preacher. Through content analysis, it was confirmed that the principles outlined by Aristotle …

Traslación: From Mythos To Kairos, Johanne Randolf Andrada, Dominic Bautista Gonzales Sep 2025

Traslación: From Mythos To Kairos, Johanne Randolf Andrada, Dominic Bautista Gonzales

Mabini Review

The pre-colonial Philippines was a vibrant archipelago filled with diverse faiths, ethnicities, and cultures, reflecting a rich blend of indigenous beliefs and practices. When Spanish colonization arrived, it dramatically transformed the religious landscape, introducing Christianity. Yet, remnants of pre-colonial spiritual traditions persisted, often merging with Catholic practices to create a distinct form of faith. This paper aims to explore the Traslación through various scholars. The focal point of this exploration is the Traslación, an annual event held every January 9 at Quiapo Church, which highlights the deep devotion many Filipinos have for the Black Nazarene. By drawing on both Western …

Placing The Good Life: Towards A Phenomenology Of Place, Chloe Nicole Piamonte Sep 2025

Placing The Good Life: Towards A Phenomenology Of Place, Chloe Nicole Piamonte

Mabini Review

This paper stresses the place of a phenomenology of place in philosophical discussions on the constituents of what various philosophers designate as the good life. A phenomenological approach to place aids in addressing the taken-for-grantedness of our lifeworld and its implications—including but not limited to—questions on embodiment, freedom, and intersubjectivity. Phenomenology reveals the layers of meaning behind the varying dimensions of human experience that constitute their lived emplacement. In turn, a phenomenology of place examines the onset of a conscious and subjective interpretation of places, and things and concepts surrounding them. Making sense of the importance of place and locality …

Spinoza And Urban Cannibalismas The Promise Of The City, Jan Gabriel Boller Mar 2025

Spinoza And Urban Cannibalismas The Promise Of The City, Jan Gabriel Boller

Mabini Review

In this paper, I introduce the idea of urban cannibalism and the promise of the city as a concept in relation to Spinoza’s relational ontology. As philosophy of the city emerges as a unique subfield in philosophy, I intend to draw an approximation between Spinoza’s immanent philosophy and urban cannibalism as a metaphorical signification that celebrates life in the urban environment. In this sense, I turn to the city which presents itself both as a promise and an illusion upon closer inspection. This is revealed by looking at the city and its determinations by invoking the dichotomy between culture-nature where …

Welcoming The Youth: A Levinasian Ethicalresponse To Filipino Familialnorms And Practices, Carl Jayson Hernandez Mar 2025

Welcoming The Youth: A Levinasian Ethicalresponse To Filipino Familialnorms And Practices, Carl Jayson Hernandez

Mabini Review

In the Philippines, children are often barred from participating in important familial and societal decision-making processes, as adults would invoke authority to silence the young ones from speaking and sometimes even treating children like retirement plans. Medina, Enriquez, Alampay, and Jocson, among other scholars, have associated this with the typical expectation that children should be submissive to elders and indebted to their families from birth. This paper examines how distorted perceptions of Filipino values rationalize and reinforce totalizing familial practices. In establishing this examination, the philosophical concepts of Emmanuel Levinas are utilized to develop an ethical response to the mentioned …

The Philosophical Thoughts Of Vajiravudh: A Dialogical Analysis From The Perspective Of Critical Filipino Philosophy, Fpa Demeterio Iii

Mabini Review

Vajiravudh (1881-1925), or King Rama VI of Siam, son of Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) and brother of Prajadhipok (King Rama VII), was a writer, nationalist, reformist, known as the Maha Thiraraja (philosopher king), and a creative genius among the Thai people. His context of a semi-colonial country that was pressured to embrace globalization and modernization still resonates with the conditions of some parts of Southeast Asia, such as the Philippines. This paper explored his philosophical ideas from the point of view of critical Filipino philosophy, a family of discourses that can be traced back to the musings of the late …

A Phenomenological Reflection On Ubos-Biyaya And Petsa De Peligro: Capitalism’S Impact On Filipino Attitude Of Spending And Church’S Proposition For An Inclusive Economy, Jonathan James O. Canete, Leslie Anne L. Liwanag

Mabini Review

This phenomenological study delves into the intertwined concepts of “ubos biyaya” and “petsa de peligro” in the socio- economic landscape of the Filipino society. Ubos-Biyaya, a Filipino term, encompasses the state of having depleted both tangible and intangible resources. Petsa de Peligro, translating to “day of danger,” signifies the period before payday when financial constraints intensify. This paper explores the correlation of ubos- biyaya and capitalism, which leads to the feeling and experience of petsa de peligro, elucidating how the latter emerges as a consequence of the former. It connects ubos-biyaya to planned obsolescence and the cathedrals of consumption, revealing …

Deleuze’S Nietzsche: Life, Critique, And Difference, Dr. Raniel Reyes Oct 2023

Deleuze’S Nietzsche: Life, Critique, And Difference, Dr. Raniel Reyes

Mabini Review

In this article, I re-visit and navigate Nietzsche’s concepts of genealogy, will to power, and the eternal return through the lens of Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy. Nietzschean philosophy occupies a significant part in the preliminary blueprints of Deleuze’s philosophy of difference, which relatively encompasses even his collaborative scholarship with Guattari. Hence, this research likewise diagrams some critical affinities between Nietzsche and Deleuze, in conjunction with other contemporary thinkers and issues. My disquisition of the aphorism as a philosophical style and genealogy grounds my engagement with the principles of will to power and the eternal return. Through the evaluative aptitude of the …

Muslim-Christian Goodness Of Life As A Philosophical Perspective, Fr. Jaime Del Rosario Nov 2022

Muslim-Christian Goodness Of Life As A Philosophical Perspective, Fr. Jaime Del Rosario

Mabini Review

Being Filipinos delving into philosophical discussions necessitates expanding the majority Christian viewpoint that crosses religious affiliation into the Muslim viewpoint as well. In Mindanao, particularly where Filipinos are a blending of Muslims, Christians, various Indigenous People’s communities, and mestizos of genetic and/or cultural hybridity of human identification even extend to various others for further consideration while in the paper the focus is on Muslim-Christian understanding of the notion of goodness of life. Philosophizing in this locality can expand the horizon of Filipinos who philosophize outside of Mindanao. A philosophical perspective needs to understand the ongoing blending of the Muslim and …

Peirce’S Ethics: Problematizing The Conduct Of Life, Epifanio San Juan Dec 2018

Peirce’S Ethics: Problematizing The Conduct Of Life, Epifanio San Juan

Mabini Review

Charles Sanders Peirce's ethics is based on his pragmaticist theory of meaning elucidated by his phenomenology and its transcoding into practice. An example of how meaning acquires practical effect is cited from Peirce's lecture on signs and their interpretation. His anti-imperialist stance against U.S. colonization of the Philippines has never been discussed before. This is the first time Peirce's politics is manifested in conjunction with his anti-nominalist explanation of signs and their ethical implications.

Confronting The Nihilism Of Our Day With Thomas Nagel’S Ethical Objectivity, Kristoffer Bolaños Aug 2018

Confronting The Nihilism Of Our Day With Thomas Nagel’S Ethical Objectivity, Kristoffer Bolaños

Mabini Review

There are few scholars today who are challenging the notion "nothing is objectively right or wrong because nothing objectively matters," one such scholar is Thomas Nagel; we will pursue in this essay a keener understanding of the possibilities of ethical objectivity in the face of the popularity of the position mentioned above (often understood as "nihilism"). We will attempt to articulate Nagel's alternative, a "view from nowhere," as a way out of the rather relativistic and reductionistic tendencies of moral philosophies today.
