Filming Dance: Embodied Syntax In Sasha Waltz’S ‘S’, Helen A. Fielding

This paper brings Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological approach to Sasha Waltz’s dance film S, which focuses on the relation between sexuality and language. Maintaining that movement in cinema takes place in the viewers and not the film, the paper considers how the visual can be deepened to include the ways we move and are moved. Saussure’s insights into language are brought to the sensible, which is here understood in terms of divergences from norms. Our Gardens of Justice special themed issue of the Australian Feminist Law Journal grew out of the 2012 Critical Legal Conference in Stockholm and its theme of Gardens of Justice, a conference organised by Matilda Arvidsson, Merima Bruncevic, Leila Brannstrom and Leif Dahlberg. We issued a Call for Papers early in 2013 in which several conference theme questions were repeated. My dissertation analyzes the political unconscious of the metaphors of sea and land in works that range from Hesiod to Carl Schmitt, it is a study of how these metaphors, singly and in the interplay between them, are scattered through a wide variety of discourses. It examines the influence that cultural contexts exert on the allegorization of sea and land from ancient Greeks and Romans (Alcaeus, Virgil, Horace, first chapter) to the Italian Renaissance epic (Orlando Furioso and Gerusalemme Liberata, second chapter), and in the “Mediterranean question.” While the third chapter analyzes how nomos – a notion that concerns lawmaking …

Focusing on the political thought of Schelling and Hegel – beginning with the early texts (1796–1802), then moving briefly to Hegel’s well known Philosophy of Right (1821) – this essay revisits the Romantic-Idealist theory of the organic state by returning to its genesis in the turbulent political, cultural and scientific debates of the post-Revolutionary period. Given the controversial nature of its historical (mis)appropriations, the organic idea of the state has become synonymous with totality and closure. This essay argues, however, that the contemporary rejection of organicism relies on narrow interpretations of Romantic and Idealist notions of organic life, interpretations that …
