Michel Henry's Phenomenology Of Aesthetic Experience, Jeremy H. Smith
Michel Henry's Phenomenology Of Aesthetic Experience, Jeremy H. Smith
English Faculty Scholarship
In 'Voir l'invisible' Michel Henry applies his philosophy of autoaffection to the realm of aesthetics. Henry claims that autoaffection, as nonobjective experience, is essential not only to self-experience, but also to the experience of objects and their qualities. On the basis of an examination of Henry's aesthetic theory in the light of Husserl's analysis of our experience of visible objects, I conclude that revisions are required in both Husserl's and Henry's approaches: Husserl's noema must be considered to be a lived-through experience, and nonobjective lived-through experience must be recognized as primordial evidence; Henry's claim that …
Hannah Arendt, Boris Diop Et Le Rwanda : Correspondances Et Commencements, Isabelle Favre
Hannah Arendt, Boris Diop Et Le Rwanda : Correspondances Et Commencements, Isabelle Favre
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
While the social and political sciences account for a relatively large number of books on the 1994 Rwandan genocide, there are still very few literary texts on the subject. Taking Hannah Arendt’s concept of beginning as its point of departure, this article begins with an analysis of the “act of writing” before going on to examine the dynamic interplay between philosophy and literature via Boris Boubacar Diop’s novel Murambi, le livre des ossements (2000).
The Roots And Fallouts Of Haile Selassie's Educational Policy, Messay Kebede
The Roots And Fallouts Of Haile Selassie's Educational Policy, Messay Kebede
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This paper attempts to assess the impacts of Haile Selassie’s educational policy on Ethiopia’s educated elite. It also inquires into the reasons the policy was adopted in the first place. The negative role that the Ethiopian educated elite has played during, and since, the overthrow of Haile Selassie’s regime provides the context of the inquiry. Admittedly, the continuous political crises and economic stagnation of Ethiopia since the 1974 Revolution point to the leading role played by Ethiopian educated elite. The paper raises the question of knowing whether the adoption of an education system that completely relied on Western teaching staff …
Natural-Law Judaism?: The Genesis Of Bioethics In Hans Jonas, Leo Strauss And Leon Kass, Lawrence A. Vogel
Natural-Law Judaism?: The Genesis Of Bioethics In Hans Jonas, Leo Strauss And Leon Kass, Lawrence A. Vogel
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Leon Kass is much misunderstood. He is not simply a Republican ideologue who tailored his ideas to break out of the ivory tower and into the halls of power. Nor does he look simply to use human nature as a moral guide. When the full range of his writings is considered and set in the tradition of his teachers, Hans Jonas and Leo Strauss, what emerges is a natural law position colored by religious revelation.
