The Status Of Animals In Biblical And Christian Thought: A Study In Colliding Values, Rod Preece, David Fraser
The Status Of Animals In Biblical And Christian Thought: A Study In Colliding Values, Rod Preece, David Fraser
Morality and Religious Philosophy Collection
A common contemporary view is that the Bible and subsequent Christian thought authorize humans to exploit animals purely as means to human ends. This paper argues that Biblical and Christian thought have given rise to a more complex ethic of animal use informed by its pastoralist origins, Biblical pronouncements that permit different interpretations, and competing ideas and doctrines that arose during its development, and influenced by the rich and often contradictory features of ancient Hebrew and Greco-Roman traditions. The result is not a uniform ethic but a tradition of unresolved debate. Differing interpretations of the Great Chain of Being and …

Examining The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed., Oliver J. Morgan, Ed.
Sacred Heart University Press Books
This collection of essays by a variety of educators, scholars, and theologians lays out some of the content behind the term "Catholic intellectual tradition," a tradition that is both a treasury of classic and contemporary texts, including religious and aesthetic products, and a "way of doing things" borne of experience, prayer, and critical reflection. Contributions focus on such topics as the ideal of the Catholic mind, the relationship between Catholicism and other faith traditions, notions of the Catholic artist and intellectual, and future directions for Catholic universities.

Geraldo is a story about what an immigrant undergoes when he leaves one culture and tries to 'join' another culture. An immigrant suffers a triple disruption: he loses his sense of place, he enters into an alien language, and he finds himself surrounded by beings whose social behavior, norms and traditions are very unlike, and sometimes even offensive to his own. The explanation of the leading ideas in this manual help students and teachers explore the philosophical themes in Geraldo. The discussion plans, exercises, and activities are designed to foster and cultivate the process of philosophical dialogue in the classroom.

When Jess's doll Roller needs to make a trip to the doll hospital, Jess is worried that Roller won't look the same when she comes home. What Jess doesn't realize is that Roller's trip to the doll hospital will trigger a special change in their relationship. Montaigne And The Coherence Of Memory, Douglas Mcfarland
Montaigne And The Coherence Of Memory, Douglas Mcfarland
Quidditas
Among the many classical authorities to whom Montaigne refers either through direct reference or quotation, little attention has been paid to Lucan and to his contribution to the intellectual and rhetorical strategies of the Essais. Hugo Friedrich, for instance, in his chapter on Montaigne’s intellectual inheritance from the classical world, does not even mention Lucan’s name. Although Virgil, Lucretius, Plutarch, and several others clearly have influenced both the style and content of the Essais in seemingly more direct and overt ways, Montaigne, nevertheless, turns to Lucan consistently and with regularity. The essayist directly alludes to Lucan on three occasions …

T.S. Eliot has remarked that "[n]ot only is [it] extremely difficult to define metaphysical poetry, but [it is] difficult to decide what poets practise it and in which of their verses." Although the terminology was initially ad hoc, post hoc, and somewhat hostile, the adjective has been transvalued and it “stuck.” But ever since John Dryden accused John Donne of affecting “the metaphysics,” and “perplexing the fair sex with nice speculations of philosophy,” and long before Samuel Johnson wrote that the metaphysical poets were “men of learning,” there has been a tacit assumption that women did not …

Recently, a fruitful line of inquiry has linked children’s acquisition of the language of the mind to their developing understanding of other minds. In particular, a cascade of linguistic effects regarding sentences embedded under mental verbs has been shown to occur around the age of four years for the average child, roughly the age when children start passing standard false belief tests. This set of linguistic effects is summarized briefly below. In the proposed study, we will turn our attention to possible precursors for the ability to ascribe a false belief to another person. These precursors include knowledge about how …
