A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Collectivism-Individualism Paradigm: The Influence Of Confucian Values On The Conflict-Handling Behavior Of Male Graduate Business Students In Hong Kong And The United States, Randy Ki-Kwan Chiu

Problem. The Collectivism-Individualism literature argues that there is a difference in the way that Americans and the Chinese handle conflict based on differences in culture. It is also speculated that these differences have been influenced by Confucian values. However, these positions have not been conclusively supported by empirical findings.

Method. Both the Chinese Value Survey and Thomas and Kilmann's Management-of-Differences Exercise were administered to 124 U.S. White American graduate business students and 142 Hong Kong Chinese graduate business students. In this chapter I show that sensitivity to the rule of contradiction can be useful in the lives of children, especially in combating prejudice and discrimination, because it encourages children to seek counterexamples to universal judgments. I argue that sociological models that attempt to delineate the roots of prejudice can be complemented by an understanding of the rule of contradiction. I further argue that the pedagogical forum best suited to promoting sensitivity to the rule is the community of inquiry, in which counterexamples stand as the most forceful devices challenging cherished beliefs and opinions.

Thinking for oneself is the product of community effort rather than an individualized achievement. Therefore, attributing thinking for oneself to an individual entails acknowledging the community of inquiry to which she or he belongs. In this chapter I discuss a sample of how children often view thinking for oneself, a contrast between thinking for oneself and thinking, the notion of a community in making thinking for oneself possible, and whether thinking for oneself should be an educational objective. I make intermittent reference to Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery in an effort to unpack how thinking for oneself is used in the novel.

In Alastair MacIntyre's "After Virtue", Nietzsche is presented as (1)an emotivist, (2) the culmination of the liberal tradition, and (3) fundamentally opposed to Aristotle. All three claims are criticized, thus casting doubt not only on MacIntyre's interpretation of Nietzsche, but also on his larger account of the history of Western ethical theory and practice, as well as on his proposal that we return to the tradition which Nietzsche has called into question.

In his essay "Understanding Music," Roger Scruton has argued for a nonreductionist approach to aesthetics, emphasizing the contextually rich language and grammar that structure discourse about various forms of art. This accords with Wittgenstein's series of "reminders" about the importance of finding philosophical footholds in ordinary language. However refined artistic taste and aesthetic judgment may become, their fundamental source is in ordinary discourse about what surprises, pleases, and moves us.
