The Non-Lover In Plato's Phaedrus, Stanley Rosen
The Non-Lover In Plato's Phaedrus, Stanley Rosen
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
My goal is to cast light on the philosophical function of that much and unjustly maligned character, the non-lover. In a secondary sense, my paper is intended as evidence of a thesis on how to read a Platonic dialogue. We recall the Symposium in order to contrast the Phaedrus.
Dinos, John Ferguson
Dinos, John Ferguson
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Speculation on circular movement is part of the general process of replacing mythology by science and mathematics - Dinos did indeed evict Zeus. That the primal movement is circular stems from astronomical observation. The atomists equate the dine with ananke, and that becomes tyche for Plato and Aristotle.
Euripides and Aristophanes were aware of the philosophical implications of the latest physical speculation.
The Methodological Basis Of Dewey's Philosophy Of Education, Richard Leroy Parker
The Methodological Basis Of Dewey's Philosophy Of Education, Richard Leroy Parker
Masters Theses
The purpose of this investigation was to show the methodological basis of John Dewey's Philosophy of Education, to state his explanation of the method best suited to education, and to establish a relationship, if any, between his philosophy and attitudes in contemporary education.
A search was made covering most of Dewey's written work, including a bound edition of his lecture notes. A thorough study of Joseph Ratner's commentary on Dewey's Philosophy of Education and of Dewey's exposition on logic, or inquiry, was undertaken. It was mainly from these sources that Dewey's Philosophy of Education was determined. The experiences and comments …

The Mutual Compatibility Of Whitehead's God And Actual Ocacasions With Respect To Temporality And Subjective Aim In Process And Reality, G. John Lucas
The Mutual Compatibility Of Whitehead's God And Actual Ocacasions With Respect To Temporality And Subjective Aim In Process And Reality, G. John Lucas
Philosophy ETDs
The inquiry into Whitehead's philosophy of which this thesis is the result began with the first reading of Process and Reality. Although the issue which is the center of concern here is quite different from the difficulty which characterized the initial stages of the inquiry, the two have much in common since the former has grown out of the latter. The initial difficulties with the position of Process and Reality have undergone successive modifications as a greater understanding of that I position was achieved, and the final modification and formulation of these initial difficulties are the subject of this thesis.

6-page telegram from Paul Feyerabend (London) to Rolf Kaehr (Westberlin) Telegram 1 I am ill. Please let the seminar continue in my absence. Inform Prof Landmann and Prof Huebner, cancel the hotel reservation and read the following final message to my class on tuesday 1pm: I am sorry that I cannot give what Telegram 2 would have been my last lecture to you. In this lecture I would have elaborated on Verons argument and would have tried to show that it also excludes consience, self expression, identification. Turning back to the empiricist methodology and demand for theoretical unification I would …
Xenophon's Teleology, Francis R. Bliss
Xenophon's Teleology, Francis R. Bliss
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
There is considerable evidence that the later Greeks and even more the Romans bypassed Aristotle and Plato in their treatment of teleology. Theirs was to be the age of immanent deity, of epiphany, of astrology, of credo quia absurdum. The Stoic Pronoia, which we have in fullest form in Cicero's De Natura Deorum 2, closely reflects the version we have in Xenophon, even transferring elements from his proof of the existence of deity to the proof of pronoia. Also, Xenophon's double treatment of his theme, stressing the cosmic in one chapter and the human in the other, initiated the tendency …

Aristotle's Theory Of Principles: A Rationalistic-Empirical Bipolarity, Joseph J. Romano
Aristotle's Theory Of Principles: A Rationalistic-Empirical Bipolarity, Joseph J. Romano
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
Primarily, this paper attempts to analyze Aristotle's notion of "principle" as it is uniquely applied throughout his works. "Principle" is a basic notion; and it is, moreover, the basic notion in Aristotle's philosophy. The purpose here is to establish as precisely as possible the meaning of 'principle' and the role that it plays in Aristotelian thought. It is shown that the meaning of "principle" involves a certain bipolar tension which strains between a logico-epistemic pole and an on tic pole. This tension grounds a philosophy which constantly vacillates between a rationalistic idealism and an empirically oriented naturalism.

Studies In Situation Ethics, Charles Allen Hampton
Studies In Situation Ethics, Charles Allen Hampton
Honors Theses
"The New Morality is Here!" proclaimed a news magazine several years ago, and with such an announcement cam acceptance, rejection, opinions, reactions, controversy, and great debates. Since the announcement, theologians, pastors, philosophers, educators, and even common men have had much to say about "Situationsethik." Unfortunately, many of the opinions offered are those of uniformed closed-minded individuals who give a negative review of situational ethics. One commentator said that the new morality will "offend some, excite many, and challenge all!" From my general observation, the new morality seems to excite and challenge the informed persons while offending the uniformed. This last statement …
The Reconciliation Of Science And Religion In Symbolo-Fideism, Shirley Brown Moon
The Reconciliation Of Science And Religion In Symbolo-Fideism, Shirley Brown Moon
Wayne State University Dissertations
From the publication in 1859 of On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, religion was in open warfare against science. By the end of the century the war was not going well for religion. Biology, anthropology, archeology, the "higher criticism" united in an attack on Christian premises, while "applied science" — technology-provided, the materialistic comforts which made Christian promises utopian and unnecessary. The reaction of some Protestant and Catholic leaders to this threat from science was a retreat into fundamentalism. Others hastened to show that the recent discoveries were not really in conflict with religious truths at …
