Plays For Young Children, Edna S. Soper Apr 1936

Plays For Young Children, Edna S. Soper

Bachelors’ Theses

The dramatic instinct is a prime force in civilization; the need to give vent to pent-up emotion, to express joy of living, to put in material form the ideas that vex his spirit, has driven man to imitate and to create. Primitive people expressed this need in songs and dances. Civilization restrains and suppresses the voluntary expression of emotion that seeks outlet in various ways. But it cannot be wholly stifled. Man feels the need to seek excitement and emotional experience sometimes in the mere satisfaction of curiosity. This is a response to a need and desire felt everywhere and …

Mechanism Vs. Vitalism, William Francis Hegner Apr 1936

Mechanism Vs. Vitalism, William Francis Hegner

Bachelors’ Theses

A problem that had always interested philosophers and scientists was the problem of life; in spite of the development of knowledge during the past centuries, men were apparently not advancing in a very noticeable degree beyond the explanation of Aristotle in regard to this leading issue. Men had always recognized the difference between living and non-living matter; but were not agreed as to the difference of differences. In trying to find the true difference many questions were asked on each side by students of living and non-living matter. The student of life asked: What were its characteristic revelations? What were …

The Henological Argument For The Existence Of God, Paul Noelke Apr 1936

The Henological Argument For The Existence Of God, Paul Noelke

Bachelors’ Theses

If "only the fool says in his heart there is no God," the contemporary world is harboring countless simpletons. Where decades ago only a minority or rancid skeptics and confused "philosophers" admitted their agnosticism and atheism, today sincere people, as well as the more egregious moderns, are quite frank in proclaiming their disbelief in a Supreme Being. Syndicated newspaper columns, novels, radio addresses, and even political speeches take up the cudgels of the new humanism ·where the modern philosophical treatises leave off. The widely read Mr. Walter Lippmann states that the common man "feels that those who claim to be …

The Philosophy Of Horace, Dorothy Lorraine Hudson Apr 1936

The Philosophy Of Horace, Dorothy Lorraine Hudson

Bachelors’ Theses

In the following thesis I have endeavored to analyze the philosophy of Horace from a study of his works; to point out his independence of the philosophic systems of the day, and to show the character of his philosophy and the fundamental principles on which it was based.

I have tried to show, also, how his own philosophy affected his daily life and wherein it afforded him a singular happiness and contentment.

Why Atheism?, Lawrence Michael Wittig Aug 1935

Why Atheism?, Lawrence Michael Wittig

Bachelors’ Theses

Of what importance is this question of atheism? Always of vital consequence to man and mankind, it presents today the paramount problem confronting humanity. In every nation, in every class of society we see godlessness daily making further encroachments upon the domains wherein formerly man was safely protected by faith in God. In Russia and Mexico atheism bas become a part of political domination; the German government seems constantly more eager to foist paganism upon its people; in America only fifty percent of the people are enrolled in any church.

An Analysis Of "Die Versunkene Glooke" - Hauptmann, Dorothea Vendt Jun 1935

An Analysis Of "Die Versunkene Glooke" - Hauptmann, Dorothea Vendt

Bachelors’ Theses

"Vom Vater hab' ich die Statur, des Lebens arnstes Fuhren. Vom Mutterchen die Frohnatur, die Lust zu fabulieren." Goethe said these words, and well may they be repeated by Gerhart Hauptmann, for in a few words the above lines characterize the man and his parents. Hauptmann's physique and the physical qualities which gave him such a very fine appearance he inherited from his father, as the above words indicate. From his mother he inherited the spiritual qualities, and the art of telling and writing stories.

The Significance Of Andrew Jackson’S Politics, Leo W. Mack Jun 1935

The Significance Of Andrew Jackson’S Politics, Leo W. Mack

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is to deal with the political life of Andrew Jackson, therefore little consideration will be given to his boyhood and youth. Of Jackson’s adolescence little la known except that he was afforded only a meagre education. Of exceptionally poor parentage Jackson secured his early legal education in a nomadic fashion. He did not confine his studies to the tutoring of one individual but rather, as his family changed their residences, he entered new offices. History has not left us the names of any one of his legal advisors but we know that he was admitted to the bar …

Oses Maimonides On The Names And Attributes Of God, Helen Mary Shackton May 1935

Oses Maimonides On The Names And Attributes Of God, Helen Mary Shackton

Bachelors’ Theses

Somehow man has always been interested in things outside of himself, and indeed this is a good thing, for without such an interest man would perish. An interest in plants and foods makes man discover the need for them in his own body. But besides these merely bodily interests there are others, which are far more significant. One of these is man’s place in the universe.

Editorial Comment On European Diplomacy As Found In Leading English Periodicals During The Two And One Half Years Immediately Preceding The World War, Harold A. Schwartz May 1935

Editorial Comment On European Diplomacy As Found In Leading English Periodicals During The Two And One Half Years Immediately Preceding The World War, Harold A. Schwartz

Bachelors’ Theses

The five publications analyzed for this thesis represented the various types of British Journals of opinion, presenting a fair, cross - section of that particular branch of the English Press. Each publication had its own particular editorial policy, reader class and methods of approach; and accordingly the international problems of the period were treated differently by them.

The Indians Of The Great Plains 1861-1876, Alice Caroline Wallner Apr 1935

The Indians Of The Great Plains 1861-1876, Alice Caroline Wallner

Bachelors’ Theses

The Great Plains, in 1840 appeared to those living in the Eastern part of the country.as a forbidden land which man was never to occupy. This land was barren except for the roaming Indian tribes, a few trappers and hardy frontiersmen who moved West. In log homes near Santa Fe some of the braver families had settled; a few forts had been constructed for trade with the Indian and for protection. Other than the early settlers mentioned, none ventured beyond the Missouri river, and the Great Plains were barren, wind-swept lands, later to be conquered and settled.

Is Man's Natural Desire For Perfect Happiness A Convincing Argument For Immortality, Felix Frank Taterczynski Apr 1935

Is Man's Natural Desire For Perfect Happiness A Convincing Argument For Immortality, Felix Frank Taterczynski

Bachelors’ Theses

The argument with which I shall concern myself in this treatise is not of isolated interest, but one which at one time or another is bound to occupy the thought of every thinking person. My aim here is not to construct a new original philosophical doctrine of my own, but to construct or offer an interpretation, on well-founded and established principles, of a doctrine which is hidden in the minds of every rational being. As a passing remark I say that I am not writing this thesis as a philosophic expert, because I am well aware of the fact that …

Immortality In Cicero, Kathryn Collins May 1934

Immortality In Cicero, Kathryn Collins

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the purpose of this thesis to show that Cicero had a carefully developed belief in immortality. Since there is little opportunity in constructing a thesis of this kind to set forth any new or startling data concerning the subject, there is left to the writer only the originality of thought and presentation. So much commentary has been written on Cicero that it would be impossible to contact all of it . It may be said, however , that since Cicero has been known throughout the ages mostly as an orator and statesman, less has been written concerning his …

“A Study Of The Occurrence Of Common Numerals In Types Of Contemporary American Magazines”, Dorothy A. Schwartz Apr 1934

“A Study Of The Occurrence Of Common Numerals In Types Of Contemporary American Magazines”, Dorothy A. Schwartz

Bachelors’ Theses

During class discussions in the years 1932 and 1933 the questions were often advanced as to whether the common or elementary form of arithmetic as taught in American schools and expressed by the use of numerals was not stressed unduly, in view of its importance or influence on the future life of the student. It seemed to the writer that the answer to at least a part of this question might be found in a survey of the actual usage or occurrence of arithmetical forms as expressed in numerals.

The Barter Exchanges In Milwaukee - 1933, Elin Seaholm Apr 1934

The Barter Exchanges In Milwaukee - 1933, Elin Seaholm

Bachelors’ Theses

Milwaukee, like other cities, spent huge sums of money to aid the unemployed during the depression through the medium of the Outdoor Relief. To alleviate this increasing burden on the taxpayers as well as to help the unemployed two barter exchanges were organized by means of which the unemployed might meet their own and one another's needs through their own efforts, that is by means of barter or direct exchange of commodity for commodity. The two exchanges, the Unemployed Labor and Commodity Exchange, Inc., and the Commodity Exchange, Inc. were organized upon the same principle as similar exchanges in the …

The Ethics Of Peter Abelard With Introduction And Translation, William Farrell Hurley Apr 1934

The Ethics Of Peter Abelard With Introduction And Translation, William Farrell Hurley

Bachelors’ Theses

It appears after exhaustive search that no complete English translation of Abelard's Ethics is available. Accordingly, not all students of philosophy have been able to use the primary source to study the system of ethics introduced by Abelard. The secondary sources or commentaries in English in most instances do not offer sufficient material for a complete understanding and appreciation of the innovation made by Abelard in the field of ethics. To furnish a translation of his Ethics is therefore the fundamental purpose of this thesis.

In seeking an answer to the problem of Epistemology, namely, that of establishing the validity of human knowledge, we are confronted with many and various questions to be answered concerning the source of knowledge and its reliability. We are also confronted with many answers to the problems and many of those are exact opposites. Our problem is to find the most logical and practical solution.

Compatibility Of Lindworsky’S Theory Of Motives With Freedom Of The Will, John J. Solon Jul 1933

Compatibility Of Lindworsky’S Theory Of Motives With Freedom Of The Will, John J. Solon

Bachelors’ Theses

The ability to make quick and accurate decisions is the aim of the average nan so, consequently, the matter of choice and decision has always been a subject of inquiry for me. While striving to know more about this power, I have chosen for my subject-matter a field that involves painstaking perusal among intricate, close distinctions. Some interpreters of Johannes Lindworsky, S.J., have maintained that his theory of motives and their influence on the will preclude any freedom of choice. My goal, then, will be to discover if Lindworsky can, consistently with his theory, maintain free-will. If I find that …

Working in the capacity of one whose duty it is to make the five and six year old child's experience deeper, wider, and more satisfying through the medium of literature the writer has realized that there is an inexhaustible amount of knowledge and appreciation to acquire in order to have a background required for intelligently evaluating literature to be used and for effectively inculcating appreciation for that selection into the children.

Teaching Spelling In The Sixth Grade, Gertrude Stephany May 1933

Teaching Spelling In The Sixth Grade, Gertrude Stephany

Bachelors’ Theses

Learning to spell involves the formation of certain habits of mind. The most important is the habit of observing correctly the printed fora of words. Next in importance, and often associated with this habit, is that of hearing words correctly. Nearly all mistakes in spelling result from the failure of children to see and hear correctly.

Radio In The Elementary School, Lenore Mary Stagg May 1933

Radio In The Elementary School, Lenore Mary Stagg

Bachelors’ Theses

Radio is a magic instrument of unity and power destined to link nations, to enlarge knowledge, to remove misunderstandings, and to promote truth. But it will not achieve these things unless we keep a more watchful eye on those who use it and those who control it. We should arouse in all people a greater sense of their responsibility for the proper use of this modern miracle. One of the distinguishing features of American democracy is the excellence of its common school system. Another name for common school is elementary school. Children who are engaged in the Kindergarten and the …

A Study Of Literature For Children, Jennie D. Steinburg May 1933

A Study Of Literature For Children, Jennie D. Steinburg

Bachelors’ Theses

All children are individuals, and as such they have interests. Every interest they have leads them to books . In them, they may lose and again find themselves . Their queries are answered, their emotions are stirred , and their lives are enriched. Thus it should be our aim to instill in children a love for reading because, a good book is a good companion, a good story is good pastime , and a good poem is good taste. It is these things that make children see the beauty in life and start them on the road towards an appreciation …

Problem Solving, Catherine Ryan May 1933

Problem Solving, Catherine Ryan

Bachelors’ Theses

"A first principle of curriculum determination in arithmetic is: Teach what is useful to average citizens in the everyday affairs of life." This principle is not the only dominating factor. Almost every curriculum has specifics placed there by tradition and speculation. There is considerable uncertainty as to what is useful, and what is not practical. The principle of social utility seems to be gaining prominence. Attempts to discover the 'real' use of arithmetic are being conducted.
