DURING the past ten years we have had several opportunities to welcome a new member to our editorial board but always under the regretful necessity of bidding goodby to a valued old friend who was moving away or had taken on a heavy load of work or for some other reason felt he could no longer serve the journal as faithfully as he would like. With this April 1970 issue we have the pleasure of welcoming a new associate editor who is an addition and not a replacement and is therefore pure gain. Our new …

THIS JANUARY 1970 we begin not simply a new year but a new decade--one that we are bound to hope will grow less violent and more certain of purpose as it moves along. Perhaps the editor has seen too many decades, or perhaps it is the world that has seen too many, but we cannot remember a sense of exacerbation or self-distrust or sheer frustration more intense and bitter than the one now prevailing. Birth-pangs of a better world, shall we hope? Why in times like these men of good will can be brought to …

After a spring sabbatical leave of blessed memory, the editor thanks retiring editor DUDLEY CORNISH for his able caretaking, uneasily resumes the editorial chair, decides that by the time the October issue appears it may prove a fit once more, reaches for the basket of manuscripts selected by Professor Comish with the advice and consent of the full editorial board . . . and discovers a richly varied collection, so varied that she is not immediately sure how to pull them together, except under our helpful rubric of "A Journal of Contemporary Thought."

WRAPPING UP a decade of academic publication is no difficult chore, especially since generous, gracious, and for the most part patient contributors have been prodigal in showering us with material-articles, poems, and reviews-for the past six or seven years. And our esteemed colleague, absent on sabbatical leave this past semester, had thoughtfully selected practically the whole of this Summer Literary Number prior to her departure for far-flung and deep-delving research on her Emily Dickinson. The result is a solid collection of entertaining, incisive, and insightful reading. The subjects of our six articles range from Herman …

FLEXIBILITY and informality of administration, operation, and organization have been among the hallmarks of this journal since its inception ten years ago; to them, add interchangeability of parts. When the Editor in Chief had a semester's leave in 1964, REBECCA PATTERSON moved easily into his chair to keep contributors happy= printers contented, and subscribers satisfied. Now the shoe is on the other foot: She is on sabbatical after a gruelling fall's work, and he is spread thinner than ever, from the Department of History in Russ Hall to the editorial suite in Porter Library. Fortunately …

TAKING UP our pen on the afternoon of election day, we are more than commonly aware of the suspense, the troubled uncertainty, on the threshold of what we feel in our marrow will prove to be a new age. Of course we could wait until tomorrow and put one minor suspense behind us, that is, the identity of our new president; but, partisan as we were in casting our ballot, and stoutly as we cheered one man in preference to another, we are nevertheless of the opinion that the new president will have little more …

REGRETFULLY the editors of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY announce the resignation of our colleague and longtime adviser in the fine arts, REED W. SCHMICKLE, whose duties as chairman of the Art Department of Kansas State College have increased until he can no longer spare the time so generously given to us these past six years and more. Professor Schmickle contributed an article "Art and the Modern Mind" to the Spring 1960 issue and joined our Board of Editors with the October 1962 issue. A native of Missouri, he holds the B. DURING TIMES of incessant change any practice or custom that maintains itself for as long as six years may fairly claim to be a hallowed tradition. Just such a tradition THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY is building for itself with this sixth Summer Literary Number. Not that we ever wholly close our pages to a good study of literature at other seasons of the year, and not that our literary number involves any really basic difference from the other three quarterly issues. The emphasis, the approach, may vary somewhat, but all four issues are alike concerned with …

WHEN ASKED by the director of one of our growing university presses how the "mystique" of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY was created, the present editor pointed at once to the names listed on the title page, singling out for particular notice that of our former editor-in-chief, Dudley T. Comish, whose eight years of editing have put their indelible stamp on the journal. But since that time I have been mulling over the word "mystique," perhaps a little self-consciously, for it seemed to me then, and seems to me now, rather a large word for this combination …

A RECENT SUBSCRIBER, forgetting or perhaps overlooking our regional main title, made his check payable to "A Journal of Contemporary Thought." Now we take serious pride in belonging to the Midwest; we celebrate its artists and writers, seek out articles of particular relevance to our broad region, and think of ourselves as speaking in a midwestern accent. But our subscriber reminds us, though inadvertently, that we strive with equal seriousness to live up to the claim embodied in our second title. We are acutely concerned with our own troubled times, nor can we always repress …

THIS FIRST NUMBER of the ninth volume of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY begins a new year with-somewhat to her surprise- a somewhat new editor. During a summer leave or a sabbatical absence of Professor Cornish, it is true, she has sometimes stepped in, has chewed pencils, checked copy, struggled with an engulfing correspondence, written forewords and afterwords, read proof, worried with subscriptions and copyright and the multifarious details involved in any publication, and all the while has rejoiced rather too audibly in the prospect of a speedy release. She still tends to think of herself as …

INDULGING natural preference and at the same time bowing to a tradition still green, the editors present their fifth Summer Literary Number. Their six major selections draw from at least three diverse literary streams: Nineteenth-century English (early and late), nineteenth-century American, and the contemporary American novel. More specifically, two articles deal with important figures in English letters: William Wordsworth, the Romantic poet who grew to estrangement from and disillusion with his native country, and Joseph Conrad, English by adoption and recognized as a superior craftsman in his second tongue by virtue of a distinguished list …

PHILOSOPHY, cinematic literature, literature and history, history and politics, and final cosmography – these compose the menu we spread before you on this spring table. We consider it attractive and nutritious; we hope our readers enjoy the various courses as much as we enjoyed their selection and preparation. One can argue the precision of the categories. Certainly philosophy is or ought to be concerned with the nature of good. Almost as certainly, literary critics can be concerned with the form, fabric, and intent of movies and television productions which, one supposes, begin somewhere with written …
