(1994) The Five Communities, David K. Kennedy
(1994) The Five Communities, David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
Those of us who have experienced the joy and terror of the intensive formation of a philosophical community of inquiry (COI) over an extended period, understand intuitively that it is a process of development which has certain characteristic structures and patterns. These can be glossed in a number of ways, all of which will be metaphors, if only because any given moment in the life of the COI is an instant of vertiginous freedom. The five structural dimensions of the COI which I am identifying are gesture, language, mind, love, and interest. I want to call them "communities" because each …

(1994) Jessie Left, David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
In this short curricular story that dramatizes David Kennedy's article "The Five Communities" (1994) a young people's community of philosophical inquiry is disrupted when one of their members, Jesse, leaves in anger. The group discusses what this event means for their community and their inquiry.

(1993) Why Philosophy For Children Now?, David K. Kennedy
(1993) Why Philosophy For Children Now?, David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
Philosophy for Children appears to be completely new in the history of culture and of education. If this is true, then it is appropriate to ask why Why Philosophy for Children, here, now, in the late 20th century West? What was missing before now (or what is missing now) which leads us to think philosophy a reasonable thing to do with children? Why then, Philosophy for Children now? Because children have with the help of vast socio-economic forces, finally escaped their lowly status on the great chain of being, and been invented as individuals and thinkers. Because in a world …

Reply To Valverde, Paul B. Thompson
Reply To Valverde, Paul B. Thompson
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Professor Thompson responds to Valverde's argument, in the last issue, that his approach to Risk puts too much emphasis on the distinction between Risk subjectivism and Risk objectivism. In doing so, he asserts, inter alia, that anchoring Risk judgments in a probabilistic framework does not go far enough in rejecting reigning Risk-analysis notions of "real Risk."

Learning To Love: Philosophy And Moral Progress, Phil Smith
Learning To Love: Philosophy And Moral Progress, Phil Smith
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Love is a crucially important notion in morals. Moral philosophy, then, should give attention to this notion, and some of that attention should be concerned with how people might develop or improve as lovers. However, when the author tried to think through some rather obvious suggestions relating to love and becoming a lover, it became clear that much moral theory gives love short shrift. Assumptions inherent in rationalistic moral theory prevent most moral philosophers from letting love be the central concept in their work.
This dissertation has two aims: to suggest four things which may contribute to moral progress by …

(1991) The Community Of Inquiry And Educational Structure., David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
Young people engaged in philosophical dialogue sometimes exhibit resistance to the program, expressed in boredom, impatience, and sometimes even rejection. My theory is that, in addition to a lot of reasons like the ones just cited, the problem has to do with the way schools and classrooms are structured, which in turn is the result of an overall educational model--what Matthew Lipman has referred to as "tribal" or "information-acquisition" education. I want to argue that there is a "new" educational model—in fact it is already about 200 years old—and that it has the strucmral characteristics which provide place for what …
Overall Laughing One And The Experiences, Anina Porter Adams
Overall Laughing One And The Experiences, Anina Porter Adams
Institute for the Humanities Theses
A fictional play based on the study of writings by psychotherapist Carl Gustav Jung. The action is set in the imaginary realm of archetypes, amoral personified energies which appear in tales from diverse cultures. In this play the mythical characters move in an ordered, ritualistic manner. They are dependent upon a geometrically centered black box for the provision of human forms through which they experience "being." A female is the human form provided in this instance and she combines her own energy with that of the other characters though she is not conscious of this fact. The archetypal energies focus …
