Lectures delivered by WKU professors to the Freshman Colloquium in the fall of 1964. The Freshman Honors Colloquium is a special course open only to freshmen students whose test scores, on the battery of tests administered to all entering freshmen, fall in the upper 15% and who graduated in the top quarter of their high school graduating class. CGU Theses & Dissertations

The orchids known today make up one of the largest Angiospermous families in the world. Recent estimates place the number of genera at about 450 which estimates between 10,000 and 15,000 species (some authorities go as high as 20,000). They are without doubt one of the most highly specialized groups of green plants. Botanically the flowers are of more than passing interest for they deviate so distinctly from the norm of the Monocots. They are the possessors of a number of unique structures that are found in no other family of flowering plants.

Amid the almost uninterrupted disintegration of systems during the last three centuries, the philosophy of St. Thomas has alone been able to stand the shock of criticism; it alone has proved sufficiently solid and comprehensive to serve as an intellectual basis and unifying principle for all the new facts and phenomena brought to light by modern science.
