"This Is Not A Christ": Nietzsche, Foucault, And The Genealogy Of Vision, Gary Shapiro
"This Is Not A Christ": Nietzsche, Foucault, And The Genealogy Of Vision, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
There is nothing surprising about linking the names of Nietzsche and Foucault, something that Foucault himself frequently did. We know that the practices of archaeology and genealogy owe much to On the Genealogy of Morals; and in The Order of Things Foucault celebrates Nietzsche for being able to look beyond the epoch of "man and his doubles,'' thinking of the Obermensch as designating that which is beyond man, and for serving, along with Mallarme, as one of the prophets of the hegemony of language in the emerging episteme of the postmodern world. Here I want to focus on other affinities, …

Evangelical Christianity And The Philosophy Of Interreligious Dialogue, Michael S. Jones
Evangelical Christianity And The Philosophy Of Interreligious Dialogue, Michael S. Jones
SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this essay, the author, an evangelical Christian, seeks to analyze the arguments for and against evangelical participation in interreligious dialogue. He finds that, while the arguments against evangelical participation in dialogue suggest some important boundaries for dialogue, they do not completely militate against it. Conversely, the arguments for dialogue form a persuasive case for evangelical participation

Review Of Derrida's Archive Fever And Caputo's Deconstruction In A Nutshell, Jeremy Barris
Review Of Derrida's Archive Fever And Caputo's Deconstruction In A Nutshell, Jeremy Barris
Humanities Faculty Research
Derrida's beautifully written and clear Archive Fever: A Freudian Impression is concerned with the establishment of Freud's London house as a museum or archive, with the interpretation of Freud's public and private texts as the source or archive of psychoanalytic science, and with the identification of sources and beginnings generally. Derrida's focus is on how psychoanalytic insights themselves problematise this identification. Caputo's Deconstruction in a Nutshell: A Conversation with Jacques Derrida sets out specifically to correct widespread failures by Derrida's critics to notice the novelty of the implications of Derrida's position (48). The book consists in a 26-page record of …
Rationalism In Normative Budget Theory, Dan Williams
Rationalism In Normative Budget Theory, Dan Williams
Publications and Research
This paper concerns epistemological rationalism and the norms used by governments to instruct their officers to perform their duties. The particular duty I discuss here is preparation of and action on the budget. In this paper I use "rationalism" as the opposite of "empiricism." This rationalism does not refer to "'economic rationality," it refers to the method of attaining knowledge associated with introspection, logic, and a priori knowledge. It is opposed to the method of attaining knowledge associated with observation, experiment, and evidence. By "norms, “normative," and other related terms, I mean action guiding language. Four senses of normative are …

Finding Godot: Postmodernism And Truth, Robert T. Gregory Jr.
Finding Godot: Postmodernism And Truth, Robert T. Gregory Jr.
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Postmodernism has enjoyed a wide range of influence as a critical enterprise, often being accused as nothing more than a method of critique. In addition, it is often objected that postmodernism advocates a radical relativism which is ultimately self-contradictory and lacks an overall sense of agency that can apply to concrete action. These issues are particularly significant when considering theories of truth. Given postmodernism criticizes traditional notions of truth and objectivity, it is appropriate to ask if postmodernism possesses a positive position on truth as an alternative. I argue in this work that while postmodernism has a significant critical enterprise, …
