The benefits of study abroad experience in second language acquisition have evolved from unchallenged assumption to the focus of rigorous study in the past several decades. The benefits of out-of-class contact with natives have likewise been questioned. Despite conflicting evidence of its benefit, students frequently cite out-of-class conversations with natives as among the most beneficial aspects of their language acquisition experience. Reviewing the extant literature, this study narrows in on authentic communication-that is, meaningful out-of-class contact with natives, in which students are able to genuinely express themselves and their personality-as a previously unanalyzed element of study abroad research. Dewasa ini banyak media massa cetak diterbitkan oleh dan untuk perempuan. Majalah yang demikian lazim disebut majalah wanita. Sebagian besar mahalah wanita diterbitkan oleh orang INdonesia (majalah wanita Indonesia); sebagian yang lain merupakan majalah asing yang diterbitkan di Indonesia (edisi Indonesia). Dalam tulisan ini dimuat perbandingan isi kedua kelompok majalah wanita tersebut, yang dikaitkan dengan isu tentang perempuan. Dari perbandingan, tampak bahwa isu modernitas, yang terutama diusung majalah wanita asing edisi Indonesia, mempengaruhi tampilan isi majalah wanita Indonesia.

How Progressive Are The Dutch? On Language, Literature, And Gender Norms In The Netherlands, Marianne Vogel

Artikel ini mempertanyakan sejauh mana masyarakat Belanda progresif di bidang norma bahasa, kesusastraan, dan gender. Dinilai dengan diskusi tentang norma bahasa di kamus Van Dale dan resepsu terhadap kamus tersebut di Indonesia serta pandangan terhadap penulis wanita dan statusnya dalam masyarakat Belanda. Artikel ini berkesimpulan bahwa kebudayaan Belanda tidaklah seprogresif yang dibayangkan orang. Dalam hal gender, pandangan terhadap status dan kemampuan perempuan yang agak miring mungkin disebabkan oleh perempuan itu sendiri. Dalam hal kesusastraan, misalnya, perempuan akan diperlakukan sama seperti laki-laki jika mereka menulis dan bertingkah laku berbeda dari yang sekarang.

Home As A Place Of Exhibition And Performance: Mayan Household Transformations In Guatemala, Walter E. Little

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the town of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Guatemala, has been incorporated into transnational movements of people, commodities, and ideas through tourism, development, and religious evangelism. The Kaqchikel Mayas living there have long looked outward from their community as they embraced, ignored, or criticized these global flows. Contemporary Kaqchikel Mayas have incorporated these global flows into the organization and maintenance of their households, while giving them a local interpretation. Some families have made their homes a place to enact their culture through exhibitions and performances for tourists. Such performances are indicative of the strategies …
