The immigration of Brazilian-Japanese to Japan has started as recently as the early 1980s as a result of an economic downturn in Brazil and labor shortages in Japan. In a recent study published by the Ministry of Justice in Japan, there are about 250,000 Brazilians currently working throughout Japan. Even though most of the Brazilians are second or third generation of Japanese descent, they are not fluent in Japanese, thus resulting in many cultural problems and misunderstandings. Some research has examined about the immigration of Brazilians (nikkeijin) to Japan, but none has investigated their acquisition of Japanese as a second …

This essay examines manga, the japanese comic Master Cooking Boy" and inquires what the manga offers to the reader beside being a popular reading. This essay reviews the history of manga and its function in the Japanese culture. The paper unravels the theories of cultural studies such as hegemony and multiculturalism in the analyse of this manga. This paper discusses the wider horizon of manga as a field of hegemony discourse and multiculturalism. It opens the possibilities to analyse manga in a different perspective and shows how ideology can operates in the popular literature.

Pramoedya depicted the brutality of Japanese troops in their occupation in Indonesia. All Japanese propaganda delivered false messages and caused disasters for Indonesian people. Japanese culture retardation and their brutality made the author suffer and down. Even though his novels associate with anti Japanese occupation and patriotism among the youth, humanities issues in fact appear as a strong theme in all his works.

Don Juan as a myth is well-known world wide over, appearing in about 50 writings such as novels, plays, operas. But a French writer Eric-Emannuel Schmitt proposes a new figure of Don Juan in his play La Nuit de Valognes (Night in Valognes): the seducer is judged by five victims and convicted to marry one of his victims in order to stop his adventures. Teachers everywhere are being held accountable for their professional actions through the test-driven curricula sweeping the nation. The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE, 2002) makes it clear that promotion of reflective practice is an important component of teacher education programs. This multiple case study examines the relationship between epistemic stances and reflective thinking using a set of theories and instruments that allowed for the analysis of these constructs. Most methodological approaches to the teaching of culture and civilization for second language students tend to have two things in common. First, they put an emphasis in history and high culture: fine arts, literature and film. Second, when they cover current events, they tend to take what I will call horizontal views of the civilization, trying to cover a wide spectrum of aspects of society, and not getting into an in-depth study of any of them.

This study investigates the production of Quechua relative clauses by Peruvian adults and children, aged 2;8-4;7. Quechua relative clauses may be internally-headed, externally-headed, or headless. Previous studies (e.g., O’Grady, 2003), suggested two outcomes: children will have less difficulty producing subject-gap relative clauses than other types; and, compared to adults, children will produce more headed relatives, especially internally-headed relative clauses. A procedure was used to elicit production of two relative clauses for each of four types: subject-gap, direct object-gap, non-direct object-gap, possessor-gap. Participants produced all types with equal ease, although children produced more errors; children produced comparatively more headless relatives, and …

There are few periods in the history of any nation as tumultuous as the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries in Ireland. The following paper examines the social and religious upheavals of this period and identifies an emergent national identity among ‘Gaelic Irish’ and ‘Anglo-Irish’ Catholics. Although English forces defeated the Irish ‘rebels’ in the two major military conflicts of the period, the Desmond Rebellion (1579-84) and the Nine Years’ War (1595-1603), the means employed by England to achieve victory, cultural continuity among the Irish (and Gaelicised English), as well as the conflict over religion throughout Europe ensured that Ireland would remain …

The purpose of the current study is to provide a more detailed account of the manifestation of identities via language. I look specifically at the most recent generation of Turkish-German bilinguals living in Germany. There are many linguistic characteristics ascribable to this generation of speakers, as has been the case with preceding generations. Three types of code-switching are described; intersentential, intrasentential and what I have called the hybrid code-switch. The latter hybrid codeswitch is observed as a more recent phenomenon, thus I designate it as characteristic of the most recent generation of Turkish-Gem1an bilinguals. Tulisan ini membahas karya pengarang perempuan Prancis, Kim Lef vre. Lef vre dilahirkan di Vietnam dari ayah Prancis dan ibu Vietnam-ia sendiri kini tinggal di Prancis. Karya-karya autobiografinya berkenaan dengan kompleksitas identitas campurannya. Dalam karya novelnya Marina la Malinche, ia menyajikan kehidupan seorang wanita penerjemah, Malinche, selama invasi Spanyol di Meksiko. Malinche saat ini dianggap oleh orang Meksiko sebagai pengkhianat bangsa. Dalam novel itu Lef vre menggunakan tokoh Malinche sebagai cermin problem identitasnya. Penerjemah hanyalah seorang "pengkhianat" ketika ia menjadi korban kekuatan di luar dirinya.

Desa Madakaripura adalah desa milik Patih Gajah Mada, patih Kerajaan Majapahit yang sangat terkenal. Namun, hingga saat ini belum jelas lokasi Desa Madakaripura itu. Menurut Prapa ca pada tahun 1359 desa itu berada di wilayah Pasuruan. Tulisan ini mengupayakan penemuan desa itu. Dengan metode analisis toponim dan peta-peta akan dicoba untuk dipastikan letak Madakaripura dengan seteliti mungkin agar ahli arkeologi Indonesia bisa mencari situsnya. Sebagai kesimpulan, kemungkinan besar Madakaripura terletak di sebelah tenggara enam kilometer dari kota Pasuruan.

This paper discusses about speech levels in Sasak, the language of the indigenious people of the island of Lombok, examining the style, meaning and some historical background of the speech levels. Based on the data, it shows that Sasak, like Javanese and Balinese, also contains low, mid, high and few honorific vocabularies which are assumed to have been borrowed from Javanese (Steven, 1975; Nothofer, 1975). However, the use of the high and honorific variations are scarecly heard in the everyday common Sasaks conversation. His Islamic thought were influenced by the modern philosophy concepts such as "myths" of Paul Ricouer, postmodern concepts like 'discourse' and 'episteme', which were developed by Michel Foucault as well as 'deconstruction' of Jacques Derrida. If Derrida focused on deconstruction of a discourse as a final concept, on the other hand Arkoun insisted that 'deconstruction' must be followed by 'reconstruction'.
