This essay reviews the history of manga and its function in the Japanese culture. The paper unravels the theories of cultural studies such as hegemony and multiculturalism in the analyse of this manga. Images of Japanese troops which drawn by Pramoedya in his works indeed related with his own experiences. Pramoedya through his characters portrays his view on humanities. Pramoedya depicted the brutality of Japanese troops in their occupation in Indonesia. All Japanese propaganda delivered false messages and caused disasters for Indonesian people. Japanese culture retardation and their brutality made the author suffer and down. Even though his novels associate with anti Japanese occupation and patriotism among the youth, humanities issues in fact appear as a strong theme in all his works.

But a French writer Eric-Emannuel Schmitt proposes a new figure of Don Juan in his play La Nuit de Valognes (Night in Valognes): the seducer is judged by five victims and convicted to marry one of his victims in order to stop his adventures. Bima is a region that has been attracting researchers' attention, which should not be surprising because it has always been a multicultural region. Its history reveals that Bima was one of the sailing routes, especially of the Malay Muslim traders, sailing from the direction of East Java. Bima then became a center of the Islamic rule in the eastern Nusantara. This paper discusses a brief history of how Bima became a center of Islamic rule that was strongly influenced by the Malays.

This paper discusses about speech levels in Sasak, the language of the indigenious people of the island of Lombok, examining the style, meaning and some historical background of the speech levels. Based on the data, it shows that Sasak, like Javanese and Balinese, also contains low, mid, high and few honorific vocabularies which are assumed to have been borrowed from Javanese (Steven, 1975; Nothofer, 1975). However, the use of the high and honorific variations are scarecly heard in the everyday common Sasaks conversation. Mohammed Arkoun is one of an international Islamic modern thinker that his thought comes into Islamic thinking discourses in Indonesia recently. His Islamic thought were influenced by the modern philosophy concepts such as "myths" of Paul Ricouer, postmodern concepts like 'discourse' and 'episteme', which were developed by Michel Foucault as well as 'deconstruction' of Jacques Derrida. If Derrida focused on deconstruction of a discourse as a final concept, on the other hand Arkoun insisted that 'deconstruction' must be followed by 'reconstruction'. Desa Madakaripura adalah desa milik Patih Gajah Mada, patih Kerajaan Majapahit yang sangat terkenal. Namun, hingga saat ini belum jelas lokasi Desa Madakaripura itu. Menurut Prapa ca pada tahun 1359 desa itu berada di wilayah Pasuruan. Tulisan ini mengupayakan penemuan desa itu. Dengan metode analisis toponim dan peta-peta akan dicoba untuk dipastikan letak Madakaripura dengan seteliti mungkin agar ahli arkeologi Indonesia bisa mencari situsnya. Sebagai kesimpulan, kemungkinan besar Madakaripura terletak di sebelah tenggara enam kilometer dari kota Pasuruan.

Tradition can be seen from two different perspectives, those of literacy (writing system) and of oral tradition. Recently, some intellectuals have shown interest in oral tradition as academic study in some universities. Oral tradition is not supposed to be seen merely as part of the past and a cultural entity of no importance. This paper describes the two traditions of oral literature and manuscript writing as a basis for local historical knowledge and records of cultural politics. As a powerful medium to persuade people to buy a product or service, ads have long been used in many forms. This study attempts to understand the language use and graphic design of comic as one of the ads forms in Jakarta-based Indonesian media, particularly in the period of 1940-1960s. By employing different approaches in Linguistic Anthropology, Mass Communication and Graphic Design, the findings show a close relationship between the language and the graphic design of the ads with the society who consumed them as well as a trend towards informal language use and popular culture.
