Teachers' Perspectives Of Implementing Language Modeling In Pre-Kindergarten Classrooms, Gena R. Puckett
Teachers' Perspectives Of Implementing Language Modeling In Pre-Kindergarten Classrooms, Gena R. Puckett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teachers’ language modeling skills are important for children’s language development and school readiness. However, 34% of pre-kindergarten (pre-K) classrooms score in the low range on the language modeling dimension of the CLassroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) observation tool within the instructional support domain in a southern state. For this basic qualitative study, the purpose and research questions explored pre-K teachers’ perspectives on the challenges of implementing language modeling and the type of support they need to improve language modeling skills in a southern state. The conceptual framework that guided the study was Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, specifically the concepts of the …

Parents’ Attitudes And Beliefs About The Ipad As A Tool For Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Sarah Michele King
Parents’ Attitudes And Beliefs About The Ipad As A Tool For Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Sarah Michele King
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractEducators have increasingly incorporated technology tools such as the iPad into classroom learning. Available evidence suggests the potential efficacy of the iPad, but the attitudes and beliefs of parental stakeholders have often been omitted from empirical studies. There was a need to better understand parents’ attitudes about adoption of the iPad and its apps as a tool for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for high school students and parents’ beliefs regarding the iPad’s ease of use for meeting students’ communication needs. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to examine those parental attitudes and beliefs. The conceptual framework was …
Disciplinary Teacher Perceptions And Challenges Of Literacy Instruction For English Language Learners, Scarlett Nicole Wetherington
Disciplinary Teacher Perceptions And Challenges Of Literacy Instruction For English Language Learners, Scarlett Nicole Wetherington
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Disciplinary teachers who teach mathematics, science, and social studies are challenged to embed literacy instruction into their disciplines for the growing population of English language learners (ELLs). In a rural middle school in the Southern region of the United States, disciplinary teachers are struggling to embed literacy instruction to support ELLs to meet grade-level achievement standards. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore teachers’ perceptions about the challenges of using literacy strategies to teach ELLs in the disciplinary classroom. The conceptual framework for this study included Mezirow’s theory of transformative learning. The key research questions of this …
Secondary Language Teachers’ Perspectives On Formative Writing Assessments, Fang Xie
Secondary Language Teachers’ Perspectives On Formative Writing Assessments, Fang Xie
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An international school in a Middle Eastern country provides five language options to students in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) program in preparation for the international baccalaureate program. However, despite the use of formative assessments by language teachers, students’ scores on the IGCSE written language exams have not improved over 3 years. Therefore, the problem investigated in this study was that secondary language teachers are challenged to promote writing achievement for students at the study site. The purpose of this basic qualitative study, guided by Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory in second language learning, was to investigate secondary language …
Language Of Instruction And Puerto Rican First Graders' Ethnic Categorizations, Margarita Marichal
Language Of Instruction And Puerto Rican First Graders' Ethnic Categorizations, Margarita Marichal
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The use of subtractive bilingual models in Puerto Rico may influence children's construction of social categorizations. There is a gap in the literature related to linguistics, ethnicity, and systems of education and acculturation of a majority group. The purpose of this multiple case study was to examine the influence of the language of instruction and teachers' communicative practices in private and public schools on first graders' ethnic identity construction in the municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The conceptual framework of the study was based on Markus's unified theory of race and ethnicity, Berry's bidimensional model of acculturation, Tajfel and …
Self-Efficacy And Self-Management Assessments On Hispanic Patients With Diabetes, Yesenia Dejesus
Self-Efficacy And Self-Management Assessments On Hispanic Patients With Diabetes, Yesenia Dejesus
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hispanics are at increased risk for diabetes and are 40% more likely to die from the condition than are non-Hispanic Caucasians. The purpose of this project was to determine the effects of diabetes education conducted in Spanish by bilingual staff on the self-management and self-efficacy of a sample of 50 volunteer adult Hispanic clinic patients with diabetes. The education intervention incorporated the American Diabetes Association's Diabetes Self-Management Education program materials. Bandura's self-efficacy theory was selected as the theoretical support for the project that relied on self-management education of the patients to improve their self-efficacy to undertake the interventions necessary to …
The Relationship Of Students' Perceived Levels Of Self-Efficacy And Language Development, Alisa Ann Wargo
The Relationship Of Students' Perceived Levels Of Self-Efficacy And Language Development, Alisa Ann Wargo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed by this study was the relationship created by mandated English language curricula and state standardized tests and students' perceived levels of self-efficacy. Vygotsky's theories on thought and language development and Bandura's theories on self-efficacy were used as a theoretical lens for this study. The research question concerned the relationships between students' perceived levels of self-efficacy, gender, age, and grade point average (GPA) and language development when learning within a standards-based test-driven environment. The ELA portion of the State High School Exit Exam (SHEE) generated language development scores. The General Self Efficacy (GSE) scale was the survey instrument …
International Students Use Of Technology For Improving Writing Skills In College, Margaret Godwin
International Students Use Of Technology For Improving Writing Skills In College, Margaret Godwin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many college-level students choose to study in another country and in a second language, often in English. In this context, a high standard of written English is important to attain good grades in college and earn degrees with distinction, which may lead to successful careers. One international college provided computer tools to students to improve their writing; however, students were reluctant to use the tools provided. This qualitative study explored these college students' perceptions of their lack of motivation to use computer tools and the barriers that prevent them from improving their English writing. The research questions investigated the technology …

Academic Achievement Of Esl Learners At A Teaching Hospital Training Programs, Abdul Fattah Rachdan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many students in an allied health program at a Middle Eastern Arab university were experiencing difficulties with courses taught in English, resulting in poor academic achievement, low grade point averages, a high failure rate amongst its first year students, and an adverse impact upon a future skilled and educated work force for the region. Tinto's theory of institutional action for students' success served as the conceptual framework for the inquiry that used a qualitative explanatory case study method to examine the experiences of those students who were facing difficulties with their studies. To address questions about why students were failing …
Testing A Structural Equation Model Of Language-Based Cognitive Fitness, Elizabeth Ann Moxley-Paquette
Testing A Structural Equation Model Of Language-Based Cognitive Fitness, Elizabeth Ann Moxley-Paquette
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The normative development of language is often taken for granted, yet problems with language development can result in stress for the individual and family. A challenge with these language development problems lies within the contemporary education system, which assumes that children have appropriate skills when they begin school. The purpose of the study was to test a theoretical model of language readiness known as language-based cognitive fitness, which includes measures associated with structural concepts of language involving receptive language, expressive language, spontaneous narrative speech, and writing fluency. The sample included children from a private school who received an extensive battery …
