Vygotsky's Socio-Cultural Theory Of Literacy; Scaffolding Children To Read And Write At An Early Age, Mahzan Arshad, Wu Hsueh Chen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the article the concept of semiotic mediation, appropriation, internalization, Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffolding in particular were reviewed to provide understanding of the process. Under the concept of semiotic mediation, the issue of how children learn through imitating adults was examined with inputs from second language acquisition theories. Vygotsky's concept of appropriation provides the springboard for a discussion on how children may appropriate the psychological tool of language through modeling and text meditation in the context of second language learning. It is hoped that the understanding of these concepts could lead to more insights in order to …

Developing An Orthography For Onya Darat (Western Borneo); Practical And Theoretical Considerations, Uri Tadmor Oct 2009

Developing An Orthography For Onya Darat (Western Borneo); Practical And Theoretical Considerations, Uri Tadmor

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Onya Darat is a language spoken, with great dialectal variation, in the interior of western Borneo. It is the southernmost member of Land Dayak, a branch of the Austronesian language family. This article reports on the development of a writing system for Onya Darat. In addition to five vowels and 19 simple consonants, Onya Darat also exhibits three series of complex oral-nasal segments: prenasalized oral stops, preoralized nasals, and postoralized nasals. An analysis of the Onya Darat sound system reveals that of these three series only postoralized nasals are distinctive and therefore need to be represented in the writing system. …

Potensialitas Dan Keterbatasan Inovasi Morfologis Dalam Bahasa Indonesia; Contoh Kombinasi Afiks "Keter-/-An", Jérôme Samuel

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper examines with a particular affixe (keter-/-an) consisting in two primary affixes. Through the analyse of terms coined by the Pusat Bahasa and spontaneous terms, the paper distinguishes between "double" and "complex" affixation, corresponding to different operating modes of affixation. The first deals with an already affixed and lexicalized word, then reaffixed and relexicalized. The second, almost only found in documents produced by the Pusat Bahasa, refers to a base getting a first affix in a poorly (or not) lexicalized form, constituting no more than a morphological stage towards the wished form, which is intent as lexicalized. Complex affix …

Warisan Dunia Situs Sangiran; Persepsi Menurut Penduduk Sangiran, Bambang Sulistyanto Apr 2009

Warisan Dunia Situs Sangiran; Persepsi Menurut Penduduk Sangiran, Bambang Sulistyanto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Cultural heritages are things from the past, which are valued by communities in recent time as part of their nation's culture. In reality, among the community members there are problems that arise as a result of diverse perceptions, due to the fact that each perception is based on own interests as is the case with the Site of Sangiran. On the one hand, the Government, as part of the present community, has an idealistic orientation towards the Site of Sangiran as a cultural heritage which unquestionably needs to be protected for the purpose of scientific knowledge and national identity. The …

An Identity Of Opposition Against Urban Cosmopolitan Setting In Yasmina Khadra's "The Attack" (2006), Retno Sukardan Mamoto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Yasmina Khadra, a female name, pseudonym of Muhammed Moulessehoul, an Algerian military officer for 25 years is now a French citizen. John Cullen translates The attack (2006) from French. Rosenau's post-modernist perspective places the Israel-Palestine conflict in a context of social gap. Israel, a First World, whereas Palestine Third World, are both in the Middle East region. Amin Jaafari and his wife, Sihem, a couple of Arab naturalized citizens of Israel, live in urban cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv. Opposing Amin's success as a surgeon, Sihem is more attracted to fight for the Palestinian liberation for a homeland. Sihem camouflaged …

'Race' And Inequality In Postcolonial Urban Settings; Examples From Peru, Jamaica, And Indonesia, Peter J.M. Nas, Rivke Jaffe, Line Algoed Apr 2009

'Race' And Inequality In Postcolonial Urban Settings; Examples From Peru, Jamaica, And Indonesia, Peter J.M. Nas, Rivke Jaffe, Line Algoed

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this essay we present three case studies of Peru, Jamaica and Indonesia to illustrate the use of the concept of race in daily life in relation to labour, popular culture and beauty respectively. These cases demonstrate how the use of the concept of race changes in the transition from a colonial into a postcolonial setting, depending on the role of the state and nation building. In Peru, we see a clear continuation of racialized thinking; thinking and speaking in terms of 'race' is still the norm. In Jamaica we find a process of inversion: the concept of race is …

Keterpenjaraan Perempuan Dalam Ruang Kota Di Dalam "Lost In Translation" (2003) Dan "The Good Girl" (2002), Asri Saraswati

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The urban space offers more challenges to the female self. Two motion pictures, Lost in translation (2003) and The good girl (2002), depict the issue of gender and space by conveying the city as prison for the female characters. This article analyses the urban space and argues that in the two movies, the female characters struggle and eventually create meaning in the urban room. Applying feminism and urban geography in analysing the position of female characters within the city, the paper finds that the two films offer their perception on, and solutions to, the imprisonment of women by the urban …

Between Eroticism And Social Criticism; The Literariness Of Shahnon Ahmad's "Terdedah" (1965), Mohd Zariat Abdul Rani

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the history of modern Malay literature, the 1960s are labelled by many literary critics as era picisan (the age of dime fiction) because of the flood of karya picisan (dime fiction) in the local market. Karya picisan here refers to works that clearly manipulate sexual themes, with the intent of conjuring an atmosphere of eroticism to attract readers. Critics generally do not consider these works to be karya sastra (literary works) because they do not fulfil two important criteria that commonly classify the term 'literature', namely bahasa yang indah (aesthetic language) and isi yang berfaedah (beneficial content). In the …

Osing Kids And The Banners Of Blambangan; Ethnolinguistic Identity And The Regional Past As Ambient Themes In An East Javanese Town, Bernard Arps Apr 2009

Osing Kids And The Banners Of Blambangan; Ethnolinguistic Identity And The Regional Past As Ambient Themes In An East Javanese Town, Bernard Arps

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

On the basis of the theoretical notions of discursive ambience and ambient discourse, this article examines the recent history of language and ethnicity in Banyuwangi in the far east of Java. Over the last three decades (with roots going back to the 1920s and earlier) a redefinition of the language and culture of the "autochthonous" inhabitants of Banyuwangi has been occurring. Their status and constitution have been changing from a variety of Javanese into an autonomous language and ethnicity, called, after the name given to the language or dialect, Osing. At the same time, an idyllic and heroic picture of …

Film "Mendadak Dangdut" (2006); Pemahaman Geografi Budaya Dan Identitas, Bayu Kristianto Apr 2009

Film "Mendadak Dangdut" (2006); Pemahaman Geografi Budaya Dan Identitas, Bayu Kristianto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Place has certain connotations that are involved in shaping the identity of an individual or a community. Due to the importance of place or location in identity formation, Cultural Studies has its own area of analysis focusing on the understanding of place, which is cultural geography. Peter Jackson (1989: 23, quoted by Giles and Middleton 1999: 104) defines cultural geography as a study on how cultures are constituted by social practises occurring in certain contexts which are influenced by historical and geographical factors. The discussion of artistic works centred on the role of place in identity formation becomes an interesting …

Urban Dynamics; An Impression Of Surabaya's Sociolinguistic Setting, Tom G. Hoogervorst Apr 2009

Urban Dynamics; An Impression Of Surabaya's Sociolinguistic Setting, Tom G. Hoogervorst

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper examines the sociolinguistic situation in the city of Surabaya, by presenting an impression of various phenomena unique to Indonesia's second largest city. A surprisingly little amount of linguistic research has heretofore been carried out on this subject, whereas it transpires from this study that enough intriguing and unique things can be found in this Southeast Asian metropolis, both among its Javanese majority as well as its Madurese and Chinese inhabitants. Due to the lack of earlier relevant publications, this research is largely based on the results of several fieldwork trips, which included the pleasant activities of watching television, …

Mengabadikan Estetika; Fotografi Dalam Promosi Pariwisata Kolonial Di Hindia-Belanda, Achmad Sunjayadi Oct 2008

Mengabadikan Estetika; Fotografi Dalam Promosi Pariwisata Kolonial Di Hindia-Belanda, Achmad Sunjayadi

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

When the first technology of photography came to the Netherlands-Indies in the nineteenth century, it was only used for government purposes and was not yet meant for public consumption. On the other hand, the rise of colonial tourism in the Netherlands-Indies in the early twentieth century required a medium for promotion. Photographs were the right choice because, as the saying goes, pictures could tell more than words. Photographs for colonial tourism promotions were produced in various forms such as postcards, illustrations in magazines and guide books, and were published by the colonial government as well as by private publishers. This …

FrançOis Valentijn; Antara Etika Dan Estetika, R. Z. Leirissa Oct 2008

FrançOis Valentijn; Antara Etika Dan Estetika, R. Z. Leirissa

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

A controversial book on the history of the VOC in the seventeenth century was written by Fran ois Valentijn, a preacher in the payroll of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The book (eight volumes), published in 1724-1726, was known by its popular title Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indi n. Most of the materials in the book were pirated from other sources without acknowledging their authors as is the proper practice of historiography. But as to its style, a number of Dutch writers appreciated its esthetic qualities. Beside that, the book is indeed useful to historians today because some of the …

Dejima; Voc Dan "Rangaku", Bambang Wibawarta

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Japan and the Netherlands have maintained a special relationship for about 300 years since the adoption of the National Seclusion policy, the so-called sakoku by the Tokugawa shogunate (1603-1867). The Dutch began trading with Japan and engaging with Japanese society in 1600, when a Dutch ship, De Liefde, arrived in Kyushu. The Tokugawa government measures regarding foreign policy included regulations on foreign access to Japan and a prohibition on Japanese going abroad. Between the middle of the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century, Japan was characterized by a stable political pattern in which representatives of the VOC (Dutch East India …

Media Dan Monopoli Dagang; Percetakan Dan Penerbitan Di Indonesia Pada Masa Voc, Kasijanto Kasijanto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article addresses the research on media history in Indonesia. The VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) period of the seventeenth/eighteenth century, also known as the early modern period, is regarded as a starting point in this study. It was during this time that printing machines were imported from Europe by the VOC authorities. The availability of paper and printing ink also made it possible for the production of printed matter such as forms, books, and other material. The first known printed media was the Bataviasche Nouvelles, which served as a kind of newspaper. This period saw three types of publishing houses: …

Wacana Kolonial Dalam Film "Moeder Dao, De Schildpadgelijkende", Jugiarie Soegiarto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Documentary maker Vincent Monnikendam compiled the film Mother Dao, the turtlelike (1995) from more than 200 titles of archived films of the Dutch-Indies, shot between 1912 to ca. 1933. This film is neither a remake nor an edited version, but a kind of collage from those hundreds of archival films, all were silent. Monnikendam re-arranged the images and provided them with a new sound frame, consisting of songs, chantings and poems, in Indonesian, Old Javanese, and Sundanese. This new composition is not just creative but also quite provocative. With this arrangement the cineast wanted to show that there was something …

Literature As A Source For History; The Case Of The "Repen Ripangi" (1886), Willem Van Der Molen Oct 2008

Literature As A Source For History; The Case Of The "Repen Ripangi" (1886), Willem Van Der Molen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Ketika Perempuan Lantang Menentang Poligami; Sebuah Analisis Wacana Kritis Tentang Wacana Antipoligami, Untung Yuwono

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) has become a very influential interdisciplinary approach, which views a discourse as a form of social practice. Antipoligamy discourse, as a social practice persisted for a long time ago in Indonesia, offers chalenging discussions in the perspective of CDA. Teun van Dijk, as one of the pioneers of CDA, articulates ideology as the basis of the social representations of groups. Furthermore, he advocates a sociocognitive interface between social structures and discourse structures. Within these views, whenever social groups, including the producers of antipoligamy texts, voice their ideas and feelings, their ideology come up apparently or, otherwise, …

"Ini Apel Ni Nya" 'This Here Apple Now'; Deictics In The Malay Speech Of Southwest Malukan Migrants In The Netherlands1, Aone Van Engelenhoven

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Vasilisa Maligina Karya A.M. Kollontai; Sebuah Rekonstruksi Atas Konsep Maskulinitas Rusia, Mina Elfira

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article is a literary analysis on Aleksandra Mikhailovna Kollontai' Vasilisa Maligina (1923) by using a feminist approach. Issues on masculinity are the focus of the analysis. The main argument of this article is that through the main character of this story - Vasilisa Maligina - Kollontai tried to expose the new image of Russian women by reconstructing the concept of Russian traditional masculinity in Russian society under former Uni Soviet communist government based on patriarchal culture.

Tradisi Lisan, Naskah, Dan Sejarah; Sebuah Catatan Politik Kebudayaan, I Nengah Duija Oct 2005

Tradisi Lisan, Naskah, Dan Sejarah; Sebuah Catatan Politik Kebudayaan, I Nengah Duija

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Tradition can be seen from two different perspectives, those of literacy (writing system) and of oral tradition. Recently, some intellectuals have shown interest in oral tradition as academic study in some universities. Oral tradition is not supposed to be seen merely as part of the past and a cultural entity of no importance. This paper describes the two traditions of oral literature and manuscript writing as a basis for local historical knowledge and records of cultural politics. The discussion will be more about the content of tradition that is related to the history of cultural politics than a historical observation.

This paper discusses the meaning of penghulu as depicted in old manuscripts written by the natives. Based on a research on these native manuscripts, it can be concluded that a penghulu plays the …

Naskah Dan Rekonstruksi Sejarah Lokal Islam; Contoh Kasus Dari Minangkabau, Oman Fathurahman

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Manuscripts are not supposed to be something unknown to the public and possessed by limited circle of people. Manuscripts are cultural heritage of a nation the content of which reflects the ideas, knowledge, tradition, and the patterns of behavior of the past society. As such they can be of use to different segments of society. This paper discusses the benefits of manuscripts to the efforts of reconstructing Islamic intellectual history in Indonesia by studying the case of local manuscripts in the Minang region. These manuscripts are not only the products of a writing tradition that had developed strongly in the …

Kutukan Dan Berkah Dalam Cerita Jawa Kuna; Sebuah Refleksi Sikap Arogan Para Pemilik Kekuasaan, Dwi Woro Retno

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Old Javanese tales like Adiparwa and Sudamala are full of elements of curse cast by a man or a god. The curses take the form of words uttered full of emotion and anger to the addressee. Curses may result in a physical transformation or a change in the fate of the person cursed. A curse cast by a god demonstrates the power. A curse, however, eventually produces blessing. Curse and blessing are two things that are different from and opposite to one another.

Kepustakawanan Dalam "The Name Of The Rose" Karya Umberto Eco, Laksmi Laksmi

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Name of the Rose, a detective novel, is set by some issues on librarianship during the Middle Age in Europe. By using discourse analysis approach, I try to know how far the concept of the librarianship was understood at that time-in the novel-based on the understanding of some concepts, starting from "library", "development system", "collection handling", which includes "classification", "censorship system" and "librarians' professionalism", until some matters on borrowing and using collection. Besides, this analysis is aimed at identifying cultural values related to the librarianship. The conclusion shows that the librarianship has an important role in providing suspense elements …

Partikel Fatis Dalam Bahasa Mandarin; Sebuah Telaah Awal, Hermina Sutami Apr 2005

Partikel Fatis Dalam Bahasa Mandarin; Sebuah Telaah Awal, Hermina Sutami

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Phatic particles are rarely discussed, especially in the scope of syntax, even though the notion of phatic communion had been proposed by Malinowski in 1923. In Indonesian language, Harimurti (1986) had pioneered the inclusion of phatic expression into the Indonesian parts of speech. In Mandarin language, there has not been any special interest to discuss it. Generally phatic particles overlap with interjections and interrogatives. However, this article discusses about some evidences about the differences among them.
