The relation of aboriginality to English has important implications for communication between Aborigines and other Australians, and especially for the education of Aboriginal and other Australian children within a context of reconciliation.

The investigation of which this is the final report derives from the assumptions that Aboriginal English has been maintained at least in part because of its function' as a bearer of aboriginality and that, by exploring the nature of the distinctiveness of this dialect and the historical circumstances of its formation and ongoing development we may better understand how to provide appropriately for the communicative and educational needs …

An Interview With Armand Schwerner, Willard Gingerich

Armand Schwemer was born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1927 and came to the United States in 1936. He has worked as a performance artist and musician with Jackson MacLow, Jerome Rothenberg, Gum Velez and others, and has published over fifteen books of poetry. His The Tablets, an ongoing work begun in the 1960s, remains one of the most protean and provocative, though underacknowledged, explorations of open composition to have emer­ged since mid-century. The following interview, conducted by Willard Gingerich, is excerpted from a longer series of exchanges which took place between April 4 and June 29, 1993.

Criticism of the methods and conclusions of the Enlightenment was initiated almost as soon as the movement itself had begun. It is for this reason that this chapter follows immediately after the one on the Enlightenment, rather than after the later chapters on nationalism, liberalism, industrialism, evolutionary biology, and the social sciences. These movements made their appearance during the latter part of the eighteenth century, but often served only to broaden and strengthen the earlier criticisms of the Enlightenment and the demands for a more adequate way of thinking than it offered. The present work is an attempt to survey the ancient comedy of the classical stage, by a study of its most outstanding exponents, Aristophanes, Menander, and Terence. The author hopes that this thesis may be acceptable to some of those, who without being professed scholars, are yet interested in the ancient Greek and Roman authors, and their conception of the comic art.

Besides the plays of Aristophanes, Menander, and Terence, the works of Willard Smith, Philippe Legrande, and Alfred Croiset are among the more important sources consulted in the writing of this thesis.

One of the ultimate objectives for the teaching of secondary Latin cited as valid in "The Report of the Classical Investigation” is the development of an appreciation of the literary qualities of the Latin author read, and a great appreciation of the elements of literary technique employed in prose and verse. For this reason, inasmuch as a study of the figures of speech in Vergil contributes to these ends, and inasmuch as a teacher of Vergil ought to have this knowledge, I consider this subject a fitting topic for a thesis.
