On March 18-20, 2019, AmaTerra Environmental, Inc. (AmaTerra) carried out an intensive survey, as described in 13 TAC 26.20 and defined in 13 TAC 26.5. Joel B. Butler acted as the principal investigator, Sara Parkin as field director, and Jessica Kenmore as field technician. 48 person-hours were expended during fieldwork, 17 shovel tests, and 10 backhoe trenches were excavated in support of the survey.

On 26 October 2017, Horizon Environmental Services, Inc. (Horizon) conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of Frontier Communications Corporation’s (FCC) proposed Amistad Electric Line Project in southeastern Val Verde County, Texas (Project Area). The undertaking will be privately funded and will not require any federal permits. However, it is located on property within the Amistad National Recreation Area, a federal property maintained by the National Park Service (NPS). In the fall of 1997, Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted archival and oral history research, an archeological survey, and National Register testing of a prehistoric site in the vicinity of the San Felipe Springs in southeastern Val Verde County, Texas. The work was done in preparation for construction of a water treatment plant and related facilities for the City of Del Rio. The survey resulted in the recording of one historic site (41VV1820) and further documentation of historic and prehistoric components at a previously known site, 41VV444. During the spring of 1994, the Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a 100-percent pedestrian survey of Laughlin Air Force Base and the Air Force Recreation Area and Marina in Val Verde County, Texas. In addition to the survey, limited paleontological and geomorphological evaluations were made.

One historic site, eight prehistoric sites, and one large site with both prehistoric and historic components were recorded. Additionally, three pre viously recorded sites (De Vore 1993) were revisited. Diagnostic projectile points representing Late Paleoindian through Late Prehistoric occupations were recovered from five of the prehistoric sites. …

During September 1989, a pedestrian survey was conducted within a I~S-acre tract acquired by the City of Del Rio, Val Verde County, for a landfill expansion project. The surface reconnaissance recorded one prehistoric site, 41 VV 1251. As a result, recommendation was made for Phase II subsurface testing.

The Phase II subsurface testing, which included a geomorphic study, was accomplished during February 1990. Cultural resources were recovered indicating presence at site 41 VV 1251 from the Late Paleo-Indian period to the Late Archaic period. However, the site was determined to be almost totally deflated. A cultural resource pedestrian survey was conducted within a 105-acre tract acquired by the City of Del Rio, Val Verde County. for a landfill expansion project September 25 and 26,1989. The results of this surface reconnaissance resulted in the recording of one prehistoric site (41 VV 1251).

Early Archaic points were found to be eroding at a depth of 60 cm in an erosional cut, and temporally undiagnostic bifaces and biface fragments were exposed on and just under the surface. During September 11-13, 1985, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an archaeological survey of a proposed water main pipeline for the Department of the Army, Albuquerque District, Corps of Engineers. The pedestrian survey identified one archaeological site (41 VV 810) that produced no temporally diagnostic artifacts. Construction of the water main will not adversely affect the site.

During March of 1986, archaeologists from the cultural resources staff of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted limited testing at the prehistoric site of 41VV801 in eastern Val Verde County, Texas. Portions of the site, which is located along a terrace remnant between Miers Draw and Red Bluff Creek, extend into the right-of-way of US Highway 277. The area within the right-of-way was investigated to determine the site's significance and its merit as a State Archeological Landmark.
